Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

A couple months ago we thought Nintendo would be the only manufacturer bringing new hardware to E3.

Turns out, it's Sony and MS with new tech and Nintendo isn't showing anything.

Pretty insane.

The gap seems too big between the original and this new model. The hell's the point in developing for the OG model?

Some theories are saying they'll drop support for XB1 in favor of this new console. It'll be BC but any games developed for Scorpio won't be forwards or backwards compatible. Which I think is stupid.

This legit feels like a calculated leak to put a damper on Sony's NEO imminent announcement.

There's no other logical reason to announce a console ~16 months ahead of launch.

Almost like the Forza at E3 event announced just recently after the Gran Turismo news last week. Hmmmmm. ;)

That's a lot of clouds...

and flops

The other console, codenamed Scorpio, is unlikely to be released until late 2017 according to Polygon's sources. It will likely be announced in the next month, though plans are somewhat in flux.

This seems like a really bad idea for current sales. That's a long ass time to wait between announcement and availability.

PS4 will be less than $300 this year come black friday and xmas you can bet on that .
Also no way NEO going to cost that much since they will price there self out the market.

Prepare to expect a bottleneck with the CPU then. If you realistically expect Neo and Scorpio to be around 400$ with those specs you are going to get sorely disappointed.

This e3 is going to be full of hype, tears, salt, and all sorts of emotions.

Forget Year of Dreams 2.0

Apocalypse is coming GAF.

You know I've been one of the people advocating for iterative consoles for a while, even before this all started going down..........and now that its real and its here its pretty damn crazy to witness haha. This whole thing is going to be a wild ass ride regardless of how everything shakes out

You know what... I'm done. I'm out.

Thanks for the last 30 years, consoles, I'll always cherish the memories. Peace.

And now to buy a GTX 1080.

See you in the next console release threads about how you can't find one in your area!

Question, why are they making dramatic improvements to GPU and leaving the other components alone like CPU and RAM?

Why not upgrade them all equally?

So this is going to be a tit for tat console war from here on out.

Another article states the spec has already been finalised but won't be out until late 2017. The original Xbox One didn't get a final spec until a few months before release.

The Neo is rumoured to be out between September this year and early next year. Sony will have time to counter this and have a better console again buy the end of next year.

We seen the article how developer's are not happy with the Neo but how unhappy will be with this superior Xbox. It's going to be far better than the original Xbox One but can't really take advantage of all this new power. They can have 1080p now on all the games but the game still has to run well on the Xbox One and all this power will go to waste. Developer's will have to work more to get games running on PS4, PS4K, One and Scorpio. They all have different spec and will take longer to develop games and to get them to work on each platform.

I think this rumoured spec is junk. Remember the articles from before this generation started with all the articles showing the Xbox or PS4 are superior but once we actually got the specifications and they were benchmarked it was a completely different story.

That would make sense but would also kill their Xbox One and Slim model sales.

I dont think it would change mind of anyone buying Neo later this year. I dont know, sounds bizarre. We will just have to wait and see.

Those are the prices you are going with? Goodbye Xbox for awhile.

Just examples, you could easily adjust to $400 and $600 if that makes you feel better. The point is they could plan to have a release and game support cycle for a budget version and a premium version.

Question, why are they making dramatic improvements to GPU and leaving the other components alone like CPU and RAM?

Why not upgrade them all equally?

What are they going to sell you the next year : p

That would imply that are giving up on the XBO. 16 months knowing that a better Xbox is around the corner will crater sales.

So ms aimed to 50% of psneo assuming they would come out at the same time? Phil just really feel burned about the xbone vs ps4 lol.

Now that neo launches this year I wonder if they are going for a even more powerful console (the rumors said specs aren't finalized yet).

Don't see how it's shots fired or why it would force Sony to announce something before they are ready to.

I still think MS announcing this early tanks sales even more and hands more mindshare to Sony. But hey they have nothing to really lose.

Yup, nothing to lose. That's what makes it exciting! Who knows what they'll try? I don't plan on buying an Xbox so I'm really just waiting for the fireworks. Regardless of what either side does the kids are about to go crazy again. What a time!

I'd rather they cut it loose. I haven't got much value out of my xbox. As long as the games are forward compatible I'll be happy.
You haven't gotten much value out of it, and now you want to buy another one?

That's backwards to me. I haven't gotten a lot of value out of my PS4 yet, so I am super pissed at a new system coming out.

Prepare to expect a bottleneck with the CPU then. If you realistically expect Neo and Scorpio to be around 400$ with those specs you are going to get sorely disappointed.

From the rumors the cpu will be the bottleneck again for NEO .
MS coming out a year later should be able to get a better cpu .

Finally, something to rub my hands over in anticipation for E3. Now all I need is a CBOAT mumbo jumbo post and I will begin to salivate again

I completely expect a solid improvement next year but I don't know if these numbers are correct. Regardless, I just put in for a trade on my XB1. Best paperweight I ever purchased ;_;

So in DBZ terms...
Wii U=Yamcha
XB1= Non SSJ Goku
PS4= SSJ Goku
PS4 Neo= SSJ2 Gohan
Xbox Scorpio= SSJ3 Goku

Did i do this right?

No DBZ has been done to death, let's do it with Marvel villains instead:

Wii U=The Vulture
XB1= Mr.Sinister
PS4= Magneto
PS4 Neo= Thanos
Xbox Scorpio= Galactus

They can afford to take a loss where as Sony can't so I could see them trying to muscle their way in like that.
But if we do end up going to new consoles every other year subsidy would make sense.

Is this 2011-2012 again? The MS warchest isn't a thing if their division loses money.

From the rumors the cpu will be the bottleneck again for NEO .

Just not for that price. Not going to happen. Microsoft are not going to sell their consoles at a loss from the get go. Not after the Xbone debacle. They'll be damn fools if they do.

I'd rather both companies put more and better RAM into these systems...the odd vs. even year releases of Xbox and Playstation systems is going to be an exercise in we're the best for 12 months...now they are the best for 12 months...then back to we are the best...and so on.

One thing about this is that Microsoft must be investing quite a lot of money here with a shrink to 14nm of the current APU and then the Scorpio APU.

Sony could do the same too.

It will surely complicate things greatly for both.

with the stick, tv box, slim and now this, i wonder if they even have any time for games at their press conference

I said earlier. The TV box and the stick have no place at E3. Save that shit for CES. You bring that to E3 people are going to bring out the memes that shit might create a new "tv tv tv" stigma.

I know for a fact this information has been discussed at a number of places for weeks now. It's not a sudden development. It's just a bunch of people have done some good digging with sources and decided they have enough to publish a standing story.

Not everything is a console war.

The photos people are posting on Phil twitter are pretty funny.

Xbox Scorpio = Superman
PS4 NEO = Batman with Kryptonite? (Kryptonite means one year lead)

Question, why are they making dramatic improvements to GPU and leaving the other components alone like CPU and RAM?

Why not upgrade them all equally?

Thats my concern for both Neo and Scorpio, just shoving extra GCN in without drastically changing the CPU and bandwidth would make bottlenecks everywhere.

We want 60 FPS at 1080p on consoles, they really need to go Zen.

You know I've been one of the people advocating for iterative consoles for a while, even before this all started going down..........and now that its real and its here its pretty damn crazy to witness haha. This whole thing is going to be a wild ass ride regardless of how everything shakes out

Here's my take on it.

As long as consoles remain disc based and not fully digital. I'm okay with iterative consoles, assuming they are BC and have the same ecosystem. Just upgraded hardware. I can't be assed to deal with PC problems, I love PC gaming but it isn't plug in and play. Not enough time in my day to fix stuff.

General audience though? Not sure, and I'm interested to see how Sony and MS will spin this to the masses.

While I understand MS's position with regards to not wanting to be the under powered system again, with this target spec of 6 teraflops, they could very well price themselves out of competition, which was probably the largest factor as to why they were getting beat early this gen. Unless they try some sort of Xbox Live subsidy model or sell at a loss.

I'd be interested if they did the subsidy model, it's always been flirted with but none of the console makers have seemingly dared.

It would also tempt a lot of people who aren't natural early adopters...
