Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

Is this really a good idea?

I mean, they are launching a year later than the PS4K in a world where they aren't the market leader. The PS4K will ride on the success of the PS4 and launch at 400€/$.

By the time Scorpion launches the PS4K would have been in the market for almost 12 months and cost 500€/$.

What if Sony decides to cut the price for the 2017 holiday season and you can get a PS4K for 300€/$.

Being the most powerful usually isn't the reason why a console is successful. Usually it's more like being a big enough jump at an affordable price. We could see a similar case to the 6th gen, where the PS2 won by far even if it was the weakest console available.

No one should think that Oculus integration is a done deal until they say there is a signed contract.

How would they split the marketplace, the most valuable asset to any company? Online marketplaces get a 30% cut right now, and it would be a huge blow to both Oculus and MS if they had to split that with the other company. I bet MS would need to surrender to Occulus Home in order to make this happen.

Getting that deal figured out would be a boardroom clusterfuck...two tech giants in Microsoft and Facebook trying to figure out how to arrange the hedges so they can both keep their walled garden.

At least we can deduce native 4K rock solid 30fps(let's be real here lol) are almost a sure thing with a 6TF+ console right? Cause that would be pretty embarrassing if not(?)

Now maybe I'm confused but system ram has no impact on textures does it? Just GPU memory matters right?

For PS4/Xbox One they share a pool of 8GB of RAM (5.5ish GB usable) with the CPU/GPU (or APU in this case). Another important factor to keep in mind that RAM is way, way faster than a 5400rpm harddrive (what the consoles ship with). Loading very large textures and being able to keep it in memory is important due to the slower nature of the drives.

In the case of my PC, it will try and fill up the full 24GB or as close to it as it can for many newer games and then spill over to the SSD when it can't use any more. There isn't nearly enough RAM on my GPU to keep everything it needs at all times so it goes to the system RAM and when that fails too, SSD is the next in line.

Yes the Xbox One Slim is 40% smaller and will have 4K support for video stuff.

Welp, I'm in. Hopefully it's just as quiet as the Xbox One is now. That thing is the best for watching anything and being able to jump into a game of Overwatch without the fan being as loud as a hair dryer.

Will it be possible in 2017 to sell a 6 TFLOP console at mass market console price without taking major hits in the hardware?

Because if so, that is awesome.

So I'm working on catching up with everything, is there any talk of the revision that is coming out this year supporting 4K video for UHD Blu-rays? That would make that in an instant buy for me this year and it ultimately becoming a bedroom box next year when the Scorpio drops.

Eh, seems so...just gonna have have to wait for an official confirmation I suppose.

In 2017, Vega will be a brand new, large die, flagship priced piece of silicon.

How will MS cram it into a $500 box?

This is only just the GPU, and I am sure this won't fit well with Jaguar so a new CPU is in order to go with it, and new memory architecture to replace esram/ddr3.

To me it's like magic. Or lots of $$ I guess can cover it if they do a loss leader on console again.

I wouldn't stress to much about noise and reliability with the Surface team behind it. Heat? Another matter.

My grandma works at Gamestop and she beta tested the Scorpio in the future. She said Halo 12 will come out begin 2017 with 8 Tflops

Liar, your grandma has been with me for 2 month now and I've never seen her remotely close to a Gamestop.

My uncle works for Nintendo's brother, and he has told him that his winged monkey spies have seen Phil Spencer pulling a 10zettaflop machine out of black hole between his butt checks. The dude is legit. Never does drugs of any sort, only crack. Mods pls pm me for clarification, I have polaroids to prove this...

MS is a partner type of company. I wouldn't put it past them to get a deal done with oculus. The both have a need of each other. Oculus needs a console to get in the hands of more gamers, and MS needs a VR headset and both don't want the overhead of each other. I'm sure they would find something.

If true maybe sony will be spooked. Who is going to buy neo if xbox is announced at e3. Also this will mean ps4k is obsolete and a new ps4 will be starting to get ready months after xbox releases. So if you want a better ps4 than ps4k just wait 1-2 years after this new xbox launches.

I can only say

Even though i still think it is a bit early for next versions.

I fully agree. When console manufacturers compete, customers win

Is HBM in Vega slower than the ESRAM?

No, especially not if they put it on the same die as the cpu. But I don't see HBM(2) dropping in price a lot. I would sooner expect something like 12GB of GDDR5X.

Based on the technology they built to make 360 games backward compatible, I would imagine they could write an integration layer for RAM that would be able to play X1 games on a non-ESRAM console.

Not totally up to speed on how the tech works, but having that ESRAM probably helped. Compared to the 360 the One just has more of it. What could help is that a lot of games are also coming out on PC. Depends on how the DirectX API handles it.

32mb of esram on 14nm will take < 1/3 the die space it did in the Xbox one. They can sacrifice some CUs and clock higher to offset the loss of ~40mm of die space.

Bolded the most important word there.

It all depends on the specs and price point. Also XboxOne sales would TANK if they announce it at E3.

So they're going to have a more budget friendly Xbox One Slim that is less powerful than PS4 and often has some graphical deficiencies in 3rd party games... and then tell people if they wait a year and a half they can get a console that leaps ahead of the PS4.

To be honest I don't see that changing much, people will just lump for the PS4 or Neo that they can get much sooner. They won't have to wait to have the best performing console right now for the next year or year and a half. And guaranteed we'll see the PS4.5.5 or PS5 announced not long before the Xbox 2 goes on sale, and people just hold off for that instead while enjoying Neo PS4 games that look pretty great anyway. :p

This is the problem with manufacturers trying to force "generations" and beat the competition to the punch. Everything gets staggered and no-one actually sits in a position of power for long at all.

Would PSNeo owners rush out to buy a xbox 2 a year after for the sake of owning the most powerful console? or would they just wait 2 years and buy the PS5 that will be more powerful than the xbox 2?

sure just wait 1-2 years, no big deal

Is $100 a major hit? Can't see the cost being lower than $499.

$499 in fall of 2017 might as well be Xbone $499 in 2013 all over again, no matter how powerful it is.

on the other hand, everyone knows nintendo's doing a new thing next year (and from the sound of it, something that's similar to what the other two are doing). microsoft could leverage that and marketing the scorpio as part of a new generation that it and the nintendo thing are a part of, creating a perception of sony having out-of-date hardware.

it would basically just be a branding/marketing move, but such a thing worked pretty well with sony's 'for the players' stuff in 2013.

Yeah, consider the kind of PC you need for Oculus and a PC at that. Unless Facebook decide to release a nice box for it, a console is ideal for them to reach out. I do think Microsoft wouldn't get it their own way and would need whatever store/platform Oculus uses and who knows, maybe Microsoft just license a VR headset, call it Xbox VR and get to do what they want with it or make their own based on the popular ones.

Holy hell what is going on. This looks more and more like msft is starting the pc living room wars early. This coupled with the rumor that no more console exclusives seems that's where it's headed.

And Sony will just put out footage of Horizon: Zero Dawn and God of War 4 running on Neo and any messaging to that effect will fall on deaf ears...
