Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

as a console owner, I play my multi platform games on the best performing system. I have zero brand loyalty and power wins EVERY time.

Same. It's the primary reason why I bought a PS4 at launch and it's the reason why I'll switch to the new xbox if these rumors are true. I will say that the forced kinnect and other factors were annoying enough to me that PS4 would have won the tie breaker if both systems had identical performance. Likewise, I'd stick with PS4 going forward if the performance was equivalent or really damn close but it's sounding like it will be fairly substantial.

I don't get it...

Isn't 4X more powerful in any other format be considered a new console all together?

Why launch under xbox one and not give it a new name?

4x is definitely enough to be considered a new console. I don't know what their branding will look like but I'd be surprised if they went the Wii U route and reused the xbox one branding in any way except to say it plays those games too.

how strong or competitive is a 6 TFlop machine in late 2017?
6 TFlop is like a top GFX card of current standards, but how will it be in 2017?

what i want to say, is a 6 TFlop console really that impressive when regarding its potential release date?

That is very nice if true. Xbox already has great games, and they have really pushed for AAA games this generation. will definitely buy Scorpio

on a closed system it's a big leap for 1080p/60 content. I think we're probably another generation away from proper 4K gaming anyway.

I mean these current console which are considered underpowered can still do amazing things.

Does anyone feel that if XBO and PC are linked through Windows 10 like Microsoft is hoping. A service like Xbox Live doesn't really warrant the price it carries? I can't deny the service that Xbox live provides but if PC gamers are getting the service without paying why would an XBO owner have to shell out? And as it stands Microsoft already take a cut from publishers for every title sold on their Xbox store so why are they double dipping on their customers by asking for a yearly subscription fee? Same goes for Sony, sure it isn't free to maintain servers and host friends lists etc but don't push that cost onto your customers that is the cost of doing business. It's free on PC make it free on console to promote parity between the two platforms.

I would say it all depends on the price of the console. If it's gonna be $800 it might not be as impressive. If they can somehow do it $500 or less it will be insane.

Who knows, maybe they will call it Xbox2. Nothing has been confirmed yet.

I think that would be smart. Then new games can be labeled "Xbox One / Xbox Two". Years down the road when there is an Xbox Three, then games can be labeled accordingly, making it transparent for the low information consumer to know if what they are buying will work on their system. For instance, some games might work on the One, Two, and Three. Others might only work on the Two and Three. All just me speculating of course.

What are people expecting for CPU and RAM in Scorpio?

If the GPU is really between 5.25 and 6TF, and there's potential of Oculus Rift compatibility, then my predictions:
CPU: 8 core Zen @ 2-2.5 ghz
RAM: 16-24 GB

It will also be interesting to see what type of RAM setup they go with to achieve the bandwidth necessary to feed a 6TF GPU.

Ha, whenever I see ROI, I now think Radio on the Internet [Silicon Valley].

Can we just stop this 6tflop bs

AMD was shouting from the mountain top how they achieve 2.5x perf per warp improvement for Polaris Citing 2.5x jump is the unprecedented gain ever in the gpu industry

Coincidentally ps4 jump from 1.8 to 4.2 is rougly 2.3x, that's why most people agree the ps4 neo is real

A performance jump > 2.5 is impossible. If ps4 1.8 is to jump to 6 thats is 3.3 x performance gain.

So we can deduce it will take 2 gpu arch generations to make the jump to 6t,
Polaris hasnt even launched yet, typically it takes 2 years to do aa new gpu architecture ( gtx 980 was released in 2014 )
Yet there are rumors vega be pushed early

Anyway if u believe ms will have a 6T xbox, be prepared we dont see it till 2018.
If u think the next box is 2017 bound, then forget about 6T, in this scenario MS will hit 4T, and content with ps4 neo parity

they wouldnt want to disappoint with everyone seeing the levels in that graph

i guess theyre pretty

scale-bound

Kampferzeon, it's 5-6 depending on what's settled on, and the cooling of the box will be adjusted accordingly

If you want competition for your digital money consoles aren't for you. 1 store, 1 provider, 1 set of rules that you need to follow. That set of rules includes paying your online access fee. On a closed platform, you have no choice. On the open platform you do.

Also one thing that isn't getting enough mention is games. I'm excited for hardware, and this might get me to buy a PC instead of a another Mac in the future, that's exciting!

But at the end of the day, these forum discussions lose sight of what these consoles are used for and that's playing games. Third party will see another hardware release as an ideal way to be "first" and combine a game with the hardware manufacture for bigger marketing appeal, but that's the ace guys, it's all about the games. And MS does have Minecraft, Halo, Gears, and Forza and a huge market on workplace and common PC in the household with Windows. I think a super successful PlayStation platform and a Windows 10 platform can coexist together. But a traditional console from MS (Xbox2/Next) I dunno, it seems like it would be a hard sell this late in the gen.

But you know, Minecraft 2 exclusively on Windows can be all the catapult it needs who knows.

Well, according to Kotaku, the source said 5 to 6, yet Poly wants to cling to the number 6, and it makes their bar chart look that much more, 'wow'.

With how the tech looks out there, I am more inclined to believe it would one low 5's to 5. But hey, that is not as fun when people want to compare with bars and stuff.

The surface team put liquid cooling in a tablet, I think they're ok on that front.

And how much to Surface devices cost in comparison to the console world? Hell in comparison to other products in their demographic?

Pricing and games will be key. Unless MSFT is looking more enthusiast not unlike Steam Machine, then it is a totally different game plan than mainstream affordable consoles.

Listen to yourselves, liquid cooling, 6TFlops, Surface Team, etc.. That does NOT sound in the console pricing realm.

Not true, if AMD TFlops. The GTX 1080 shits on this no matter how you turn it.
Next year we're going to have the OC 1080s, maybe 1080ti...
If we are talking 5-6TFlops AMD, then it's somewhere in the ballpark above GTX970, maybe around GTX980.

I consider 980ti, Titan, 1070, 1080 as top GFX right now...in late 2017 this might change.

I love all these rumors.

This is all but confirmed.

We'll see after E3 ... which I dont think they'll use to "announce" the Scorpio.

The surface team put liquid cooling in a tablet, I think they're ok on that front.

Wait, they did? When did this happen??

Also this reminds me that the Xbox One Slim will be the first main gaming device to come out since Panos took over hardware at MS... something to look forward to.

I am praying for a powerful CPU in Scorpio and for devs to utilize it heavily. One of the most disappointing things about this gen is the quasi-stagnation of physics and larger scope simulations etc.

For me it's been lighting. When this gen was announced/started, I was really hoping we'd see real-time dynamic global illumination as a commonplace, but that's not been the case. I hope in Scorpios case at least, real-time dynamic GI will be easily achievable when it's released.

Wait, they did? When did this happen??

Also this reminds me that the Xbox One Slim will be the first main gaming device to come out since Panos took over hardware at MS... this is very promising.

Panos is ace, I hope he doesnt have another Lumia moment here though

Scorpio? More like El Scorchio at those flops and heat generation

Makes me wonder if they designed the original as a big black box knowing they'd want to keep updating the internals without having to think too hard about cooling. I would say yes if there hadn't been huge leadership changes and directional changes post-Mattrick.

The maths says 4.5 is the max it can jump to.

So how donu conclude it could be 5?

This feels like one of those logic vs faith arguments

Don't you think Microsoft are blurring the lines between their console actually being a 'closed' platform? How would they justify it? If the PC Xbox app provided the same features as the XBO such as friends list and the store what reason other than "because that's just how it is" would they have? And how long do you think a response like that would be acceptable?

That is just an iteration of standard heat pipes and vapour chambers already found in existing devices. This isn't "Liquid Cooling" in the traditional sense.

Maths mean nothing if you consider that they may decide to increase the size/wattage/change the size of the box/change the cooling subsystem

Like half or more of Sonys recent third party "exclusives" ended up on pc where online is free. It doesn't matter when you're invested in a console whether the pc gamers are getting an identical (or in most cases better) online experience for free. That's just the way the boxes work and it's clearly been accepted as such.

What is the lowest amount of power needed to run Oculus at a good level? I think people are forgetting that when they are talking about Scorpio.

Xbox 360 original 203 W
Playstation 3 original 207 W

Polaris 10 at 6 Tflops with GDDR5 will be near 150 W. (Nviida 1070 GTX is 150 Watts). Add a 20-30 watts CPU and other components and you are in the same TDP ballpark as X360 and PS3 gen.

well I can't read every post but the xbox one looked like a wreck from the start. I can't imagine anyone was crazy enough to think it would be #1 but I guess there's always someone here that would.

oh ok that was before it was announced. that makes more sense.

"Free online". Lol Just like "free games" from PS+ and Games with Gold right?

I just can't see it happening in terms of pricing. How are they going to be selling a powerhouse of a system with the equivalent of a 300-400$ GPU and still make a profit?

People seem to be drooling over the idea of 32 gigs of fucking ram and powerful desktop-class CPUs but how realistic is that without having the nextbox retail at 800 dollars?

Damn, Microsoft should just sell prebuilt PC's with the Xbox label and proprietary UI slapped on top.
Wait a minute, maybe i'm on to something here.. Call me, Phil!

With 6TF you'd be tickling the balls of 4K for sure. Especially for less demanding titles like the Dragon Ball Xenoverses of the world.

You are not looking back far enough. Does your history stop at the reveals and E3 of 2013?

This is the first console generation were the most powerful system, the PS4, is the market leader so it is logical for MS to try to compete with Sony with raw power.

The problem of this generation is not the power of the hardware but the software and the lack of new IPs. We constantly play sequels and the good new IPs, almost three years into the generation, are very few.

Will more powerful (and expensive) hardware fix the new software and new experiences issue? With the development costs of AAA games constantly rising somehow I don't think that publishers will be more willing to take risks and create new IPs.

Even the financially very strong Activision/blizzard gave us only one new IP until now this generation, Destiny and now we got Overwatch.

Personally I am not yet interested for VR technology (because of no software) and having a very powerful PC I don't see the reason to spend another 500 dollars to buy a new Xbox One (i have a One and a PS4), especialy now that MS brings all its franchises to PC. Even Halo will come to Windows 10.

It will be a very interesting E3 this year ha ha ha

As I have said time and again, I already bought and invested in hardware. I just want software now to make these systems I bought worth what I paid. This generation is just now taking off and here they are pimping new machines? I am sorry, but L-O-L. I just don't see a need for it.

AMDs numbers are in like for like cases. Not accounting for if you increase die size, increase power draw/clocks, or possibly make more room for GPU stuff by abandoning the eSRAM for faster main memory.

The surface team put liquid cooling in a tablet, I think they're ok on that front.

The Surface 4s big passive heat block is impressive, but come on...Heat pipes do not make for liquid cooling in the computer usage of the term. They pulled that same nonsense with the Lumia 950XL heat pipe calling it "liquid cooled", they weren't even the first to heat pipes in phones.

I just remembered an interview of the Xbox "head honchos", when the story was told how the first Xbox's Processor was decided.

So I'm bored and just going to throw it out there.

Is it possible that the Xbox "Scorpion" could go for an Intel processor instead of AMD? Pascal over Zen? Could Microsoft's new console be constructed like the original Xbox?

Probably not, but I wonder how an "original Xbox" designed console (practically a Steam Box) would compare/cost versus Xbox 1 slim or a PS4 Neo?

"Free online". Lol Just like "free games" from PS+ and Games with Gold right?

Online is free on pc.
Glorified game rentals on the other hand aren't really free. You need to keep paying your sub.

I don't see MS or Sony shifting strategies on consoles when they get your money now. The money that's made from w10 sales is gravy.

xbone is weak as fuck

they need a better one out as quick as possible

Building premium devices as examples for other manufacturers to follow is exactly what the hardware strategy is for all of their other devices. Given the rumor that they're working on bringing the Xbox UI to Windows I wouldn't be surprised at all if the strategy is to go the Steam Machine route.
