Polygon: Xbox Scorpio will be a ~6 TFLOP system (v PS4K's 4.14), unveil soon, Fall 17

So:

2016:PS4K
2017:
corpio
2018: New PS

Consoles are going to become expensive.

Basically this

2016: PS4K "Skip"
2017: Scorpio "Buy"
2018: New PS "Maybe Buy"

If the specs for Scorpio end up true Ill be switching back to Xbox as my main console.

Rumors of Oclulus support will seal the deal.

I can't believe Sony would bring out another PS only 2 years after the Neo. Even another upgraded console.

So:

2016:PS4K
2017: Scorpio
2018: New PS ??

Being a console fan is going to become expensive.

What if Microsoft ends up letting you turn your PC into an Xbox and somehow you can play all Xbox games on it? That would essentially deem the whom power battle irrelevant for many.

Really interested to see what we learn on the 13th.

Oculus support for Xbox could be seen miles away. I'd bet that will happen

25+ years of disc formats are enough. Bring something new or embrace the digital future.

With all those various boxes they're planning to release, I'm shocked that there's no super-slim mini discless XboxOne in the making. Next gen, m8, next gen...wait, that doesn't work
;P

I'm in total agreement with you. I do think that the Xbox after Scorpio won't have any disc slot at all. I think it will be all digital and have something that someone could buy to play discs. 2019,2020 and people still using discs? Cmon.

People asking for disc free futures? My dumb AT&T internet has a 300 GB cap per month, I'd be paying so many darn extra fees cuz of that.

Each game will be around 40 gigs a pop unless it's a indie game.

Also I resell games to make money to spend on other games.

Not to mention my internet is only 6 megs fast.

Internet still sucks in a lot of places

B-b-but surely you can move or change providers. You must be living in a 3rd world country. Embrace the all digital future...

That's assuming I have any desire to play on PC. I know this is information that surprises some people, but I for one just genuinely prefer consoles while also being capable of acknowledging the superiority that playing on PC gives you.

And if Scalebound does drop day and date on W10 with crossplay, that would be even better. I care far more about having a large community to keep a game alive than I do about exclusivity, and I would imagine quite a few people interested in the scorpio feel the same.

So wait... you are one of the millions of people who buys games that are available on PC for a game console? Get out of town!

It's not like Sony should go full panic mode because of some DF threads on neogaf.

Exactly. The average consumer doesn't care about power; It's all about the software. And PS4 has that; 1st party exclusives, most Japanese 3rd party games being exclusive to it (please, no PC talk; This is strictly between consoles), & more.

That, & brand recognition plus a great library of games that PlayStation has always had since PS1. If the average consumers truly cared about power more so than software, then they wouldn't be enjoying the NES/Famicon, SNES/Super Famicon, Sega Genesis/MegaDrive, PS1, PS2, Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, or PS4 one bit.

I can't see Sony doing that either. Quite frankly they don't have to usurp Microsoft in the power game, because they have a very loyal fan base. The Playstation division is becoming Sony's main cash cow. They would be better off trying to maximize profits with inferior hardware because their worldwide fans will be there for their exclusives regardless.

Quite frankly I don't think Sony really even wants to play the power game in the long run because if being the most powerful system becomes the narrative for the market leader. Then it becomes who has the deepest pockets fund cutting edge hardware every 2-3yrs.

Could end ugly...

All that power, if accurate, doesn't suddenly mean everything 60fps, and it shouldn't ever have to be that way. If a dev wants to go for broke and make their game even prettier, then I say they have every right to target 30fps while pushing graphics as far as they can take them.

And, just like before, the ps4 being more powerful has very little to do with the overall reason for why it has been outselling the xbox one. It had a far smoother marketing build up prior to release, but more than anything, it came in at a much better price compared to their next closest competition. It's that simple. PS4k will be no less awesome a system even if these specs for the new xbox should turn out to be true. Last I checked the games and their content still count for something. The games are still everything, so it honestly doesn't matter which console is more powerful so long as the games are there.

I agree. IMO 60fps is a design decision not at technical one. all I ask for is a stable frame rate whatever it is

I think that of course they won't show the new console at this E3, but they will announce it coming next year and will just say something like: "Our strategy is to give player choice, for those who don't want to spend too much, here's the xbox one slim at 249/299$, for those who want better performance and graphics, next year we will be launching a new hardware piece"

The Slim is going to have to debut at a cheaper price than $300. The Xbox One has been $300 most of this year with discounts and or Gift Cards factored in. For Example, right now, the Xbox One is $300 with a Gift Card and a free game at Target if you use the Cartwheel App (so it is about $250 without counting the free game). This price hasn't exactly made a huge splash sales wise. I feel like if the Slim debuts at $299 and it is nothing more than a smaller Xbox One, it isn't going to make any big impact on sales at all. You sill get that small uptick the first month, then it will go back to the Xbox One monthly sales average.

This Xbox One slim needs to debut at most at $250 (which you also mentioned) if it is going to make an impact sales wise. Debuting at the same price the Xbox One has been most of the past year ($300) doesn't seem like a great move in my opinion. Especially when these slim console versions are released lower manufacturing costs in the first place.

If the industrie wants to push VR, then
Games being 60 fps definitely help with VR.

Attempting to somehow to draw a correlation between Sony participating in a console power struggle and the PSN network hack? It seems like Microsoft has some very loyal fans as well.

And console devs will do exactly this as history has taught us time after time again. These guys can literally have a 20TF+ system to work with and you'd still get some native resolution at 30fps due to this graphical/IQ push.

As a dev, it's extremely tempting to push the system as far as you can possibly push it especially in a closed console environment. So regardless of power, the push to the limits will always and forever be there.

Lmao, borderline delusional I'd say.

As someone who doesn't have a gaming PC, I would love to be able to do the opposite. Turn my Xbox One into a PC that can run Steam games.

And who knows, that could be happening. I just want to see these things happen so we can see a gaming news console/PC world dynamic we have never seen.

yea totally good idea to release another new console 2 years after the other what could go wrong

It seems like both MS and Sony are drunk with the "Apple and Samsung release a new high end device every year, we can too!" Idea stuck in their minds while the other two companies arr not far from sobering up when their customers stop upgrading so often and drive demand down...

Fixed hardware for 5 years or more with a limited period of cross generation titles (a lot less than people complain about) is a defining factor what a console is. The two big hardware manufacturers see better customer retention and bigger profits this way, but this model does not have enough value for people to really sustain it in the long run IMHO.

When was the last generation where we didn't see new hardware SKUs mid generation though?

As long as the games released can be played on both I don't think it's going to be a huge deal. People who buy the console for their young kids just won't upgrade. Enthusiasts that care about VR and graphics will.

The people that constantly say there is no reason to get an xbox if the game you want is on PC remind me of the people who can't believe some people will always prefer Pepsi.

at what sacrifice though? there's always a trade off. i'm willing to take a really pretty game (single player experience) at 30fps vs less at 60fps.

now for multiplayer i always want the highest frames possible.

This...I really wish Halo 5's campaign was 1080p/30 (with no goofy distance animation frame drops) and better textures. The MP can be 60fps

I'm honestly still not sold on VR for gaming yet. I admit I haven't exactly been looking very hard, but I don't feel I've seen a convincing enough VR gaming experience that tells me that I'm getting something worthwhile or somehow superior to what we have at the current moment.

The people that constantly say there is no reason to get an xbox if the game you want is on PC remind me of the people who can't believe some people will always prefer Pepsi.

What they don't get is people may not always want to deal with configurations, buying specific pc components, some of which can cost more than an entire videogame system (with games) by themselves. Some folks just don't get that people often prefer the gaming experience on a console over a PC. So certain games coming to PC doesn't automatically invalidate the need for an Xbox based console by any stroke of the imagination.

These rumours are nothing like slim versions of consoles. Those have the same specs and play the same games the same way. They're just smaller/cheaper.

Nobody knows how these rumoured revisions will go down. The market might embrace them or they might be rejected.

Let's not pretend they're bound to be okay because the market accepts cheaper revisions of the same thing.

The truth is there's little to draw on for guidance and it's going to be very interesting to see which way the market reacts.

This was already debunked.

There is nothing to be debunked.
Current gen games already struggle at 1080p60, that's why we don't see them that often.
Now steal even more ms to render a frame. How will a game look with 90 fps locked on current gen? VR can make a game look good still, of course, because of a new way you are experiencing a game but from an objective point you can't expect much with low end systems and such high demands.

I was also not sold with x1 and ps4 performance in combo with VR, but now that we get new consoles it might become interesting. Yeah sure psvr + ps4 will work just fine with the
frame interpolation. But i think devs can make VR pretty interesting using scorpio and neo
for VR.

discs won't change because there will be forward compatibility. they need to work on old systems

That`s one major issue with forward compatibility. Developers are already have huge problems with getting current generation games to fit on a 50 GB disc.

Wasn`t there also an article about Xbox One and PS4 actually being able to support 100 GB discs?

MS has basically announced all their first party games will get PC versions day one so you can feed Scalebound as many teraflops as you can afford irrespective of the Scorpio's existence.

I want a big "not everyone wants PC gaming" sign nailed to the door when people come into this thread

I can't believe Sony would bring out another PS only 2 years after the Neo. Even another upgraded console.
Most likely 3 years after neo, just as neo is 3 years after ps4. So 2019. Whether it's more or less than that, will only depend on the success of Neo and/or Scorpio relative to it.

What I really want to know is how will current games perform on these? Improved performance or the same as now. That's a make it or break it question for me. Would love if current games had improved performance
