There is more history behind the players of melee than smash 4. Fans love rivalries and there are a lot in the melee community.
Hahahaha there are people playing melee off garbage can setups right now. Melee players are too savage and don't care about the poverty ass setups they'll have to go through to play
The nature of the NX port will be crucial in terms of how Smash 4 will progress. If it has more characters or any major changes in general, then we're back at the same situation of the game changing right before people can truly adapt, but the new content may capture the interest of those who didn't jump in before or those who dropped Smash 4 after a while. If the NX port is just a straight port of the Wii U version, the meta-game can continue developing uninterrupted, but those who dropped Smash 4 may be less inclined to come back (though Smash 4 being on another platform that isn't a sinking ship may go a long way already).Yeah, that's definitely a huge part of it. The top players are all well-known and are admired by younger kids. Other than Zero, not many smash 4 players are that famous yet, and the metagame is still settling (and will take longer every time a patch is pushed).
And it can enjoy it's spot as a Saturday game.
Nah, I doubt it. Until Smash 4 proves that it can pull more viewers & more hype than Melee, it's keeping its Saturday slot. That being said, it'll probably get a Saturday night slot (which would be an improvement compared to the Saturday afternoon time slot of last year). The EVO guys only want one Smash game on the main stage on Sunday. With this in mind, Melee has the most hype, the most viewers, & the better storylines of the two Smash games. It makes perfect sense that the EVO guys chose Melee for the Sunday slot instead of Smash 4.I imagine this news will change that sooner than you think.![]()
Amazing. On both announcement and the dedication in this setup.
It's exactly this kind of dedication which proves that Melee isn't going anywhere. The Melee scene's dedication is above & beyond most communities.

It's still Melee's time, at least as far as viewers are concerned. And at least right now, I don't see that changing anytime soon.Melee had its time. Now is the time for Smash 4.
And you're not wrong about the bolded. It's just that, as far as we know, more people want to watch Melee.Great news and well deserved
At the end of the day, people can make excuses and shit all they want, but more people want to play Smash 4 at EVO, period.
But it's always good to count on some dizzying spin when something positive about Smash 4 pops up.

Entrants are half the battle, the other half is securing the viewers.Considering the amount of entrants, hopefully Smash 4 will be able to secure a Sunday slot next year.
Why would it need to escape the FGC? And "shin-eSports"?I can easily see Smash 4 cracking 2.5k at EVO, and I don't think Melee will be far behind. It's impressive that the Smash scene can contain two separate games with such crazy levels of entrants for tournaments and little overlap.
If Nintendo really put in the time and effort (and cashmoney) I could see Smash being the biggest competitive fighting game on the planet and maybe even the first fighting game series to escape the FGC and become shin-esports.

Smash 4 gets more players on FGC events and Melee gets more in Smash events. Pokken was not out last year when Smash4 got more entrants than Melee at evo, and it wasnt out this year when Melee got almost twice the players than Smash4 at Genesis
Man, you are trying to spin this entire thread right now, so I wouldn't open that can of worms.
Good, it deserves the hell out of it.
Entrants are half the battle, the other half is securing the viewers.
There's definitely meat, don't get me wrong. But there isn't nearly as much meat on Smash 4's bone compared to Melee's.Yup Smash 4 has amazing depth
Ive reinvented my playstyle several times over since it came out
So much meat on the bone for this game
The Top 5 most-viewed games at EVO last year were...It's not like Smash 4 is unpopular with viewers, though. I don't know how it's doing compared to MKX, GG Xrd, and UMvC3, but it wouldn't surprise me if the numbers are higher.

Respect for what, putting Smash 4 on Sunday? The EVO TOs' logic isn't exactly unjustified (one of each franchise for the Sunday stage). We will know about the viewers amount on ceo, since smash 4 is getting Sunday instead of Saturday.
Big respect to jebailey there.
KingBroly made the claim that putting money behind Smash 4 would kill Melee quick, and people responded by pointing out that Melee eclipses Smash 4's viewership at EVO. That's how that entire line of discussion began. This thread did not play out the way you describe. Nobody is 'making excuses and shit', nobody is trying to put 'dizzying spin' on anything. Well, I wouldn't say 'nobody', at least not now.Actually I'm trying to make sure there's a balancing force to the idea that "this is less significant because not as many people are watching as Melee," which one could have predicted having been said before looking at this thread.
Me pointing out spin is not spin itself.

You could honestly make an argument for both sides. EVO usually goes by the rules of having one of each franchise on Sunday, so their decision to have only Melee on Sunday makes sense. Likewise. Jebailey doesn't go by EVO rules & wants Smash 4 to prove itself, so his decision makes sense. It all depends on the context of each tournament. For stop listening the same argument:
"Melee is grass root, it always deserve to be the first xdxdxdLOLXD"
Jebailey said no, smash 4 needs its opportunity to prove itself, so we giving them the Sunday spot.
So respect to him for that.

I thought you were refuting something that I said. But seeing as we aren't, nevermind. And that's why I said respect to him for that. What are we arguing about?
At least for viewership overall as well as Smash-specific majors, Smash 4 kinda still lives in Melee's shadow. I do believe that there is a place for both, it's just that I don't see any scenario where Smash 4 overtakes Melee completely in every regard without a massive overhaul of how Smash 4 is played on a fundamental level.Good. Glad it's finally surpassing melee. I think melee is cool and all but it's good to see 4 getting the attention it deserves instead of living in the shadow of a previous game.

I dont think anyone hates melee.
But they aren't. And if you listen closely to the thoughts of the Melee scene, there's a reason for that. But relax, I'm not saying that Smash 4 is a bad game by any stretch of the imagination. I'm just saying that there's a reason why Melee players are sticking with Melee.Thats what crazy
I dont think anyone hates melee. It will always be special and endlessly timeless
But im not about to drag smash 4 through the mud and its a legitmately amazing entry to the series and the first one to get updates and patch support
The entire communityy should be behind this game
As stated earlier, that has more to do with how EVO operates than anything else. I've mentioned how they prefer to have one of each franchise on Sunday, which is likely the main deciding factor for Melee being on Sunday & Smash 4 being on Saturday. And given the viewership (see a few posts above for the EVO 2015 viewership break-down), that may not change anytime soon unless there's an absolute upset this year. That being said, I do hope that Smash 4 gets a better time slot on Saturday that won't screw over its potential viewership.well if meele has the better spot on the schedule it will obviously overshadow smash 4, no? its kinda logical, nobody would see a smash tournament on saturday night!
