It's basically the long form of a good hollywood blockbuster adventure type story, nothing about it is particularly original or thought-provoking but the execution is basically impeccable for what it is.

There's a lot more to FMA than just that, but I don't know what to say without spoiling anything major.

Whether you're watching the original FMA or Brotherhood, both take a while to get interesting. Try to stick with it till episode 10 at least, it's worth it.

It's literally the only theme of the story. Oppression, white supremacy, xenophobia. It dragged along it's main plot so much that it was overshadowed by that one theme and even ended on that note...

The original was at least thought provoking. Brotherhood is just another Shonen with one trick up it's sleeve.

Then again, I still have to watch the movie... But the original had the best Ending

EDIT: It has to be said, I'm not really big on Anime, so it's very rare I think the story of one is worthwhile. I didn't care for Attack in Titan at all for example.

2. Search for Full Metal Alchemist, the regular one
3. Watch it in English if you have to.
4. Binge it until episode 10
5. Tell the girl you want to watch the rest with her

Anime is just a medium like any other medium. There are anime that you'll like more than others. Most anime is bad. Just like any other movies, tv shows, books, games, etc. So don't go into it thinking it's not for you just because it's anime.
