You're delusional if you really believe this. Some games like DOOM, you will be able to virtually stay above 60 at all times maxed at 1440, but with more intensive games you will have scenes that are too complex to hold 1440p60 at all times. There will also be games where an OC 1080 will fail to hold 1080p60 100% of the time.

Excuse me if I take the doom-and-gloom talk less than seriously after the GTX 980Ti owners dragged down previous threads about these new cards with their absurd pessimism. If you've got actual reasons why you disagree with me, show them. Don't just say "you're wrong" (or your aggressive version of it) and leave it at that. That's not how arguments work.

Frame drops here and there aren't a massive issue for me, playing on a gsync monitor should help at least.

I wouldn't even have mentioned anything if I hadn't seen these stats repeated multiple times over the last few days. Those are my facts. You've demonstrated quite clearly that you haven't got anything to build your argument upon but are merely speculating, and poorly at that.
All I'm asking is that you contribute. If you've got actual facts to present, then I would find them very interesting as I'm currently waiting for my first G-Sync 1440p monitor to arrive in the mail. Any real data you have to show would be appreciated. So far you've done nothing but act like a goon, and I'd much rather have a constructive talk with you.

What games can I expect to drop frames on a 1080? Id appreciate a list of titles that drop frames below 60fps now as well as all the titles releasing in the future that will fail to hold 1080p60fps? I mean surely you have this data since you're acting quite obnoxious about it.

That's due to the game rendering the shadows super far away where you can barely see them in the distance lol. Shadowboost ftw.
Even if i put shado dostance on low, this are some drops at those moments to the mid 40s.

That's weird. I don't recall much slowdown in that game, and I played it on a GTX 780 on a pretty high detail level. Not that I ever used a framerate counter, but I would have expected to notice a drop down to the 40s.
Project Cars is CPU bound though. There's only so much a GTX 1080 can do there.

Sigh, the EVGA card (regular type with ACX3.0, not SC or FTW) I pre-ordered from a Norwegian retailer has had its expected ship date pushed back from the 10th to the 17th. It almost makes me want to change to the FTW edition since it has the same ship date (at the moment at least).
You wouldn't want one. Better idea is to put on an AIO water-cooler (if you can mount the small radiator somewhere in your case) and some heatsinks for VRM and memory if the card doesn't have a plate/heatsink for it already.
Is that easy to do? I had a h60 in my desktop but replaced it with an air cooler for less noise during general use. So I have space for a rear radiator (120/140 only).
Wouldn't be surprised if the FTW is pushed back a week too

My 1080 is set to arrive today, can't wait to get home from work. Of course I'm going on a week long vacation in two days and work tomorrow. Guess there wasn't much point in buying the FE, herp derp. At least I can benchmark DOOM and feel like a winner for a few hours before succumbing to the reality that I spent 700 dollars for a graphics card I don't really need.
Depends on the card you've got. I've got a MSI 980 Ti which happens to have a midplate and its own heatsink for the VRM (otherwise you'll have to stick some heatsinks on). To mount the AIO cooler you need the NZXT G10 bracket and a compatible AIO cooler. I use the Corsair H55 on mine.
It's less noisy than the stock cooler (which was already the quietest 980 Ti cooler) and allows better overclocking. Plus I can move it to my next card.
Very easy to do, the trickier part is to really make sure that the VRM and memory are sufficiently cooled as the AIO cooler only handles the GPU even though the bracket has a single silent fan for pushing air to the VRM.

A good way to judge whether games will drop frames @ 1440p is to look to the 980ti and how it drops below 60fps at even 1080p in some games. You are moving a lot more pixels at that higher resolution and a card that is 30% faster at best, so it will still struggle at times.

No, you won't. Most of the benchmarks below are done without even maxing out the games settings and 1080 is already showing 60+-10 average which means that it'll be dipping down to ~40s for minimals.
And all this is even before you start to add things like in-game supersampling, PhysX or newer GW effects like HFTS, VXAO, Volumetric Lighting, ets. It doesn't hold 60 in 1440 even today.

Huh, those benchmarks are showing considerably lower FPS for the same games I've seen much better benchmarks for. Like 20-40 fps lower in several cases (not counting minimum FPS). I wonder what's different, as those other benchmarks also claimed to run at max settings. I saw some of these as late as yesterday, for games listed in the list above.

I placed an order for an FTW a couple of days ago on Komplett, and it has a tentative date of the 17th of June. I'm expecting it to change though, based on the talk in this thread :/
Your mind is playing tricks on you. There was no doubt some buyer's remorse, perhaps particularly from those who jumped on the HP deal, but it wouldn't make any sense for 980 Ti to shout "980 Ti rules, 1080 drools" en masse given the 980 traded blows with the 780 Ti.

I think I'll be picking up two myself, I'm in the pessimistic camp. I was going to hold off until there was at least a little info on GP102 and do a Smokey, but with release probably at least 9 months from now and having just picked up a Vive I've slightly forced my hand.
Just waiting to see which are the clear winners of the AIBs. Lightning edition looking good from what we've seen so far.

Apparently, the pictured Lightning card from Computex was a 980Ti. No idea why.
As for holding out for another generation, the wait for any of these custom cards to drop is hard enough.

I've been having PC issues since upgrading last week to an i7 6600k. Overwatch starts at 60fps and then over a period of 30 seconds to a minute, drops to 20fps on average. I kept getting frequent "WHEA_UNRECOVERABLE_ERROR" BSODs. Figured it was the CPU.
After scratching my head for a week, I think it's my 670. Doing a test tonight. If so, I guess I'm definitely jumping on the 1080 instead of waiting for the 1080ti.

And yeah, it's pretty difficult. I am several generations behind at this point but I've been able to hold off because I was busy with uni/work/life.
Now I'm free for the foreseeable future so I'm just sitting here with my mouse hovering over the order button trying to dissuade myself.
I can't imagine using a 670 and waiting for the 1080Ti. There will always be something faster a year away.

MSAA happens to be among things covered by "maxed out" approach as well.
I have 980TiG1 and I have a pretty good idea of how 1080 would work in 1440 as I have 2560x1600 display. It will definitely chew anything at this resolution and provide a playable experience but not at 60 fps while maxed out. Iconic case is QB obviously which is going below 30 fps in 1440 even on 1080 if you disable the upscaling, and I'm pretty sure that it's not the last such case, especially with PS4Neo and XBOwhatever on horizon.
Here's what I have in The Division in 2560x1600 when it's "maxed out", with all NV effects active but without in-game supersampling (meaning that it's not really "maxed out"): 44,8 average fps. 1080 stock would be at ~50 fps there.

Keep in mind that there are some engines out there that have obviously not had a lot of attention put into them for the PC versions. Assassin's Creed since Unity is a typical example, but we also see this with The Division and (especially) with Quantum Break. While it's true that the GTX 1080 (and by extension: any graphics card out there) is insufficient to deal with these games at certain levels of quality, the fault lies more with the game engine itself than with the graphics card.
It reminds me of the article that was posted last year or so about how most optimizations these days were done by the graphics vendors on the driver level, while the games themselves were a horribly unoptimized mess that relied on Nvidia and AMD fixing whatever the devs couldn't fix themselves. There are some really bad developers out there (speaking as a professional developer myself), and the graphics vendors are the ones who have to pay for their lack of competence.

AssCreed (with the latest two games on the new engine) is a good example of how to do a PC game, imo. The games scale well with added horsepower. This wasn't the case with AC games before Unity, which still can't really be maxed out without questionable performance. I remember the endless bitching with Unity that the game was terribly optimized and didn't play well. It played great on highly clocked Intel 4-Core HT CPU's paired with a powerful graphics card, and scaled even better with Intel 6-Core CPU's, which allowed the games to maintain 60fps more often when maxed out.

Scaling well with horsepower is only half the equation though. It needs to start with a good foundation too. Syndicate plays really well on a PS4 at 1080p (edit: 900p), so the lack of comparative performance on the PC is inexcusable. Ubisoft's policy towards PC is that they don't have to spend money on optimizing for it since people can always throw better hardware at it. This isn't a policy we should applaud.

I've actually had a lot of luck with my 670. I might not get 60fps in something like Rise of the Tomb Raider but I'm usually happy with my results. I'm always a midrange. This is the first time I'm going a bit beyond that with my upgrades.
And I had just cancelled my EVGA FTW pre-order. I feel like a fool! lol
