Mirror's Edge Catalyst EA Access Trial Now Live

I'm really disappointed.

The first game was amazing albeit a little short.

I feel like this one didn't need to be open world. And it's littered with filler missions that get boring. Go here deliver this. OK.

I dunno, it's not BAD per say it's just i'm dissapointed.

These impressions really are making me think that Dying Light is the Mirror's Edge I really wanted.

Its got a meaningful open world, filled with uhh.... life, parkour opportunities galore, and all kinds of reasons for exploiting those opportunities - zombie traps, safe zones, resource caches, supply drops, side missions, random events - and reasons to do your roof hopping and free running at a full sprint: zombies, thugs, and limited daylight hours until the monsters come.

So far even the positive feedback here makes it sound like the open world is extraneous, and that all of the elements of the game don't really come together or mesh well. They're just there because its a game made in 2016 and that's how its done.

Will still keep a close eye on this, but am definitely dialing down expectations.

People were asking for it. Open world fatigue is obviously a very real thing these days, at least among posters active here, but at the release of the first game there was a lot of talk about how it was a shame that how in a game where the city stretches out before you, you were limited to a narrow path. Regardless of how the open world here turned out in the end (I liked the beta but can't know for sure until I've played the full thing), I think they approached this from the angle of giving fans what they wanted.

Also Dying Light isn't like Mirror's Edge at all.

Yeah, I was one of them. But I'd think you could make a meaningful open world - where it fully plays into the story, and where you seek out the fastest routes and master them because you need to.

For those looking to get their open world parkour fix it sounds like its even better than ME. Its what drew me to the game in the first place, and I think they nailed it.

I'm still somewhat looking forward to the game, but if you played the beta you should have a good understanding of the story and whether or not you'll like it. I fucking hated it. It ticks every box on a lame young adult novel, from the one dimensional cast to the BIG BAD GUY CORPORATION. Just stinks like it's written for 14 year olds and their introduction to capitalism and street smarts.

Hmm. I think I will cancel my pre-order after all these impressions. Definitely disappointing to hear. I did enjoy my time with the beta, but I was apprehensive about how the open wolrd would work as well for this game. I guess I will pick it up when its cheaper.

Time trials are supposed to do this.

I mean, if that's your only takeaway, I guess. It's like saying that it's a bummer that the next Gran Turismo doesn't have proper single player, but fortunately there's this arcade racer that'll totally fill the void. Superficial similarities aside, they're different things.

Mirror's Edge is a technical time trial game, Dying Light is an action game where the parkour is there to give you a cool and more involved way of traversing the world.

Lost the original some years ago, but I just recreated it with Faith's revised Catalyst design.

I haven't been into Netrunner in a while -- eventually the pool of cards became overwhelming to me and everybody I know only plays competitively -- but I love the game.

Yeah, I only play casually with my friends, it's a great game. And what a nice card! You nailed Faith's theme perfectly :D

The narrative in this game is so....so impossibly bad, for a major AAA game in the year 2016. Like I actually get a little upset every time I see another one of those stupid characters said more inspid dialog, in this cliche dystopa setting, with these tired overheated Korean movie melodramatics.

Like did they really think the response to their terrible e-surance cutscenes in the first game was to have MORE narrative!?

I only played it for a hour and has a huge fan of the first ME, I described my impressions earlier and I think that I will have my fun withe the gameplay and artdesign, but I am really pissed about the characters and story. The first game, had a small and decent story, kind of nice. But this game feels like a bad wannabe epic story which is actually a bad teen drama show nobody wants. The voice acting is so bad, I have no words.

I like the open world and the traversal controls are a lot more forgiving than in the first game.

Combat is a bit meh. It's awesome leaping off of something into enemies, but the hand to hand stuff is a pain; the shift moves are nice but could stand to be even snappier.

The story is isn't anything special after 6 story missions (where the free trial doesn't allow you to progress further) and the nature of the storytelling is such that characters aren't consistent and changes in motivation are sudden and jarring.

But the core gameplay I love. The style of the first game is there and has more diversity. There's plenty of options to tackle most challenges and I like the time trial integration. It was a neat feature to pull from the Criterion/NFS games, fits perfectly here and you can turn off the markers if you don't like it.

The only impression i have to share is that when you are in the flow, when you are locked into a path and you are running sliding knocking dudes out at speed its the closest game to a VR experience in terms of lock you in immersion.

So thumbs up.

Alright, can confirm on PC: making another Origin account and paying another $5 DOES INDEED give you another six hours AND retains all of your save data.

How much you want to bet I end up beating this game before the official release date? I will make a third and fourth account if I have to. :D

Wow these impressions are not great. In fact they mirror the early impressions of the first one iirc.

I bet an infinite amount of dollars, because you can't progress past the 6th story mission, regardless of time remaining :p

I will take that bet for $10,000.

Dropped early here, gonna play it this evening.

I'm actually torn on preordering it on PSN for the theme or getting it early, the theme is REALLY nice but you know, weekend gaming.

Every negative review I've seen is legit, in the sense that the story is overblown and such. But I had such a good time with the beta that I have full confidence in my enjoyment of the final product. Not that the early impressions are wrong, per se. I just want to run.

Oh, lol, well nvm then. :D

Well, I'm STILL really happy I was able to extend the time limit—the extra $5 is well worth it as far as I'm concerned. I use the extra time to explore the world and do some delivery missions.

This kinda warms my gaming heart.

Went to download the trial on my Xbox One and found out that my yearly subscription for EA Access ended yesterday. Guess I will have to renew it.

So I pre-ordered the boxed retail version of the PC game since it was the least inexpensive alternative (Amazon, $47.99).
I downloaded the EA Access trial on my PC and just played for about 90 minutes.
As others have expressed, I am not sold just yet.

Here is my biggest question... Do people think my progress will carry over from this Trial version even with the boxed retail copy or do I need to purchase it digitally direct from EA?

Truth be told if my progress will not carry over, I may go ahead and cancel my preorder outright and possibly not even pick the game up. If it will carry over, I think I will keep it, as I am hoping things will pick up.

DirtyLarry, progress will carry over.

I don't think you can access the final mission or anything. The EA access version is limited to ten.

There is some ugly blurring/sharpening combo going on on PC. trying to see if that is editable in config

Edit: managed to turn them off, looks SO much crisper. Super jaggy now though. Will try injecting AA when at home.

It's disappointing that cutscenes are still pre rendered although they seem to be less stutter-y than the beta. Also textures are definitely better, but there are still plenty of streaming problems with some textures never coming in.

Either way, feels great to be running around again :)

Has anyone had a chance to figure out if you can turn off the red social markers littered all over the place? I know you can turn them off on the map, but in the beta for whatever reason there was no was no way to turn them off in the game world and it looked disgusting.
I also want to know this about the full game. In the beta there got to be a LOT of red markers all over the HUD.

Two more questions:
  1. Did they fix the beta bug where some delivery missions (the delicate vial) wouldn't show the destination icon on the HUD through walls?
  2. Can someone please try making a straight-line, flat custom time trial, and running it once in a sprint and once with bunny coil hops? Which is faster? I'm still looking for confirmation on whether they did anything to fix the exploit, or whether all record times will be constant bunny hopping instead of the much-emphasized running. :P

By the way, preload for the full game is up on Origin.

Thanks. I just played another hour and I am real torn. Real torn. Sucks as I was so looking forward to this game. I just feel like the open world does not fit this game world very well. Lot of the same paths, etc. I am guessing it opens up though, or should I say hoping.

So what's the verdict on the PC version? Good? Bad?

Anyone using Windows 7? The beta was fucked on anything but Windows 10.

I thought someone said that you can only get to a certain point but maybe they just ran of time.

This might be a dumb question, but do EA Access trials expire? By that, I mean that, if I don't get to it before the 7th am I locked out of playing the game unless I buy or rent it?

How so? It ran for me on Windows 7, and a quick Google suggests it ran for others as well.

Yes it ran but people with the same spec system as me on 10 had almost double the frame rates. I couldn't even maintain 60fps on a 970 on low. A lot of people had the same issues on Windows 7.

I think its great so far. The biggest problem is that the 6hr time limit meant I wasn't taking the time to explore different routes and retry races :V Fortunately I finished all the main story missions available last night, so can now chill and explore.

It's a real shame frostbite doesnt support modding.

Edit: Also it sucks Icarus is so...ugh. Deus Ex Human Revolution did it nicely where Pritchard is an asshole and that's how he is. But Icarus doesn't come anywhere close to that mix of respectable dick. On the upside at least Faith also dislikes him, but you can tell there's gonna be some sort of redemption thing which is gonna fall incredibly flat :/

I feel like a large part of why people feel this game is less "clean" than the original visually is because at this point any image of it that you get shown is going to be running with 8xMSAA at 4K or above, down sampled to 1080p.

To show what that can do for this game, I took some down sampled shots, and the game is utterly gorgeous. You can also see how the textures are much improved from the beta.
Good news as well is that you get around 30fps on ultra on a 970 at 4K, so hopefully a 1070 will be enough for 4K 60fps at reduced settings!

No, I still have 5 hours+ left for Battlefront and PVZ GW2 can still play both and those games have been out for some time now.

Having a ton of fun with this so far. The section you open up that wasn't in the Beta is purty. Combat feels good, though a little shallow so far. The MAG rope is great from the little I've used it thus far. I may finally 3 star that damned A Handy Shortcut dash!

Story can be meh, setting can be blah, characters can be feh, but this game is just fun to play.

I hate the average open world because getting from place to place is boring and a chore. But this and Xenoblade X are both just fun to move around in. The only open world I remember feeling this way about before those was probably Spider-Man 2.

Can you try running it with default AA + 1080p @ ultra + reshade lumen sharpen and see how it looks? Reshade lumen sharpen fixed the blurriness for SFV and FO4 for me.

Holy shit, that's beautiful. The art is just incredible.

I tried what you said for the second thing, and, assuming I did the bunny hop right, the time was exactly the same.

I mean, I can tell you what I think of the game.

If you really liked Mirror's Edge 1, you'll like this. But it isn't much better in any sense. It's essentially the same game with an open world forcing you to travel before missions. The quality of the missions themselves is almost exactly the same.

I don't know if you'll appreciate it but here's my impressions from the trial at least: https://mtconsidered.co.uk/2016/06/02/mirrors-edge-catalyst-ea-access-impressions/

Thanks for your impressions. Maybe I'll still end up picking this up soon, but I have a lot of backlog of games right now, and the impressions in this thread aren't screaming "you really need to play this when you get a chance" the way some other recent releases had going for them. I'm still happy to know we're getting more Mirror's Edge, but perhaps it's something I can wait on playing for now.

Review copies are out. Embargo is Monday at 9am PT.

Thanks for confirming this.

I'm loving the game so far. It is everything I wanted out of Mirrors Edge. Yeah, the writing and VO isn't great, but that's not what I go to ME for. ME is a platform racing game at its heart, and giving me a huge open world to run around in is pure bliss. I'm not really sure what exactly people want out of the open world to be honest. Filling it with more stuff or characters kind of defeats the purpose. The exciting thing about the open world is seeing what kind of courses players design, and then trying to master them. To me saying this game is bad because of characters and story is like saying Forza is bad because the Ford GT has no personality. This game just isn't going to be for everyone, but so far it is pretty amazing at what I want from it.

Bit the bullet and bought access just for this trial. It runs way better than the beta did on my system. I have an i7 2600k, 16gb ram and a GTX 970 running on a mechanical drive with Windows 7. I could barely keep a steady 45-50fps on ultra/1080p with the beta, which turned out to be an issue with the beta and Windows 7, but so far it's been a pretty steady 60fps ultra/1080p. That beta must've been a really old, buggy build.

You'd have to coil jump (crouch or whatever once you've unlocked the power) to use the exploit before. If they fixed it that's awesome.

I really hope they fixed that exploit. Nothing like exploitative shit like that to ruin a time trial game.
