Dragon Ball Super |OT2| June 12: Judgment Day

I guess that's one reason Toei is throwing more people on Super. If Toriyama is calling you out on quality, you fucked up.

You know epic doesn't mean "hardcore" or "serious," right? A comedy can be epic. Dragonball's first saga is arguably one of the most epic in the whole series. It was billed as a "mysterious adventure"

All of Dragonball has an epic tone. It shifted away from gags and comedy around the red ribbon saga, but it was all definitely epic.

And the 22nd tenkaichi budokai wasn't very light hearted. They broke Yamucha's legs violently. They planned to murder Goku in revenge for Tao Pai Pai. They were fighting a gang of assassins.

Have to disagree. The first story arc was adventurous, but not epic in any sense of the word. There was no real major threat to Goku except for Pilaf and he was an idiot, and most of the stories were self-contain. And the humor didn't shift until the end of the 22nd tournament. That tournament had a Man-Worf who turned into a man by looking at Krillin's bald head and Krillin beating Chiaotzu by using simple math. Trying to murder Goku is old hat since Bulma shot Goku in the first chapter and an entire army tried to do it, and Yamcha being humiliated, news at 11. The assassin angle wasn't even played up. It was mentioned once or twice because Tien wanted to be like Tao, but that is as far as it went.

Holy fuck that nep. I'm on board 100%.

I sure hope Toriyama stays involved. Especially with the direction this next arc appears to be going.

I would suggest looking up different types of epic literatures. Goku's first arc is definitely an epic.

This is definitely some sort of robot arm:

I like this shot:

Hmm...

What is he holding here?

I know about what an epic is and its different types. The first story arc isn't an epic. The Red Ribbon Army Saga would be the closest thing to a comedy epic.

IT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED THAT THIS FUTURE TRUNKS IS THE FUTURE TRUNKS FROM THE ANDROID SAGA. EVERYONE SPECULATING IT'S FROM ANOTHER UNIVERSE/EXTRA TIMELINE PLEASE STOP. I NORMALLY WOULDN'T CARE BUT FOR THE PAST 5 PAGES THIS HAS HAD TO BE EXPLAINED AT LEAST ONCE PER PAGE!

READ THE THREAD PEOPLE, THIS TRUNKS IS THE SAME EXACT TRUNKS THAT CAME BACK AND HELPED KILL CELL.

carry on.

this should be the new |OT| title

I would like some of the pathos from future trunks' timeline to transfer over to the current one. Maybe kill off few of non essential characters. My picks: gohan, goten, and trunks. Just gohan if I really had to pick one. At this point this is the most meaningful contribution he can make on this show. I know he's dead to most of you anyways but I still believe him dying can improve the quality of the storytelling.

hahahahhaa

Holy shit Toei, what are you doing?

It's fucking Dragon Ball. I know you've got people working on One Piece Gold and other projects, but jesus christ, how can you screw up so hard you alienate Toriyama into almost leaving the show?

Just... god...

Damn right, It's fuckin' Dragon Ball. You would assume it would be okay to throw your full weight and resources behind a franchise like this. They'll get their money back 5-10x over with Dragon Ball 's worldwide mainstream appeal. This franchise is the textbook definition of a safe bet.

If the rumor is true it definitely makes sense along with them just having more money to spend on the show as well. If things still aren't to his liking with this arc they should probably put the show on break for a few months to start the next arc with a more proper production schedule, possibly with even heavier involvement from Toriyama.

Anyways, I finally got a good raw, time to make some GIFs!

Ya know, I was just thinking: Id love a ftrunks single player game.

This picture looks very "gamey".

Maybe get platinum to do the combat?

Getting more and more bitter about Xenoverse 2.

I want good graphics, good gameplay, and relevant roster.

Too bad I'm getting shitty bogus Trunks' alt story (while the real one is back), crappy movie stories jammed into the mix, into an essentially broken mess whose only merit was providing a breath of fresh air after all the retellings in games.

Which is a good point that's honestly not as appealing when Super exists.

Xenoverse 2 started production before Super was even announced, so this Trunks story is gonna be shitty DLC costume at best...

Get them gifs going !

Also, they can't put the show on a break. They have virtually nothing to replace the Dragon Ball slot.

again, you seem to think epics cannot be lighthearted...

No, it isn't an epic because there is no real sense of danger except near the end when they're trapped by Pilaf and are about to be roasted. Before then, Goku had no real challenge and caked walk everyone. Like I said, the first story maybe based on Journey to the West, but it's no Journey to the West. It doesn't even compare.

The Red Ribbon Army Saga would be closer to a lighthearted epic since there was some danger to Goku and he was pushed.

Putting the show in break really won't increase the animation. Toei will just move on other shows. They're not going to spend months drawing episodes for a show that isn't airing.

The big problem with Super's schedule is that by the time the storyboard is all done and the episode is ready to be animated they have 3 weeks until that episode airs because the show didn't really have any preproduction.
And if the show went on break to fix the production issues that might cause Toriyama to leave you can be damn sure they'd actually fix those issues.
Most likely though they're probably just going to put tons of staff on each episode like they've done for all of the episodes between these two arcs (except last week) and try to work out the production issues in the back ground more seriously than they have before.

The idea behind Xenoverse 2 seems to be changing events to different outcomes. Sounds fun to me.

That kind of PR bullshit worked for the first game. "Save History" aka fight shitty purple version of everybody forever, so fun.

Fool me once...

They have everything to prove. And the whole concept of the game results from them not wanting to bore players with "same old stuff". Which isn't an excuse when they have a new series to work with, that is gonna be butchered / ignored.

I mean to this day, Xenoverse is the only game I just can't plug in and play. Local is the worst shit ever, online is only spam and i can't play with friends because nobody has the same level, coop is boring as fuck because enemies are bullet sponge.

I mean it's impossible for me to be optimistic until we see anything significant.

I do like the fact that Bulma and Trunks have the same hair color now. That's how it should've always been. It's weird Kid Trunks sill has purple hair though.

I believe Brief's hair also changed colors at some point, but in his case it actually went from blue to purple.

Well I don't have HIS source.

He said that on Kanzenshu forum.

He has been reliable and provided several verified "insider" information in the past.

There is no reason to believe he is lying given his track record but let's consider it rumor.

She said that (I think).

But Toei really doesn't work that way. It is like the animation won't improve if Super took a two month break because they won't be animating anything. The staff will just move on to the next project.

I am certain the part about Toriyama leaving is there own words. Because if it was why did they used the word 'surely'. It would be, my source told me that Toriyama is pissed and was about to leave before they pulled him back with Trunks. Which really doesn't make much sense since if he was made, why would a storyline about Trunks bring him back. And, let it has been mentioned before, Toriyama being unhappy with Super has been known since the 30th Anniversary book so it isn't really new information. Why is he upset is the part that no one said, most just assume it is the animation and production. Could be something else altogether.

Uh, no, Toei typically does preproduction and because of it none of their other shows have schedules messed up like Super. For instance they've been doing preproduction of a new Tiger Mask anime for awhile and that isn't even airing till later this year. Toei doesn't just start shows without a plan like they did with Super. The animators would work on other stuff while stating the early work of the new Dragon Ball stuff, just as they do for any anime, the main thing would be planing far a head and getting lots of scripts and storyboards done like they do with all of their other shows, this would allow them to more properly schedule who is working on what and give them the time they need for each episode and even have some big episodes in production for a few months much like many other anime do.

You know, "having a sense of danger" is not what defines an epic.

For you maybe. If there is no danger or any risk to the hero losing, I will hardly call that an epic.

That isn't what I said. I said that Toei will not stop Super just to get ahead of episodes because they didn't do it with Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z.

Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z had normal schedules, Super doesn't.
Toriyama also didn't threaten to stop writing Dragon Ball because of the anime.

If this new threat kills Future Bulma... Future Trunks better get the main fight AND kill. I don't give a shit, keep Mr IDoEverythingGoku away from all of that.

Besides that though... the tone of the preview is already reminding me of Android/Cell saga and not just because of Trunks/time travel. It just seems a lot darker.

I'll probably get shot for this but I hope there's some convenient plot-device so that all God-Ki characters are unable to get involved so we can see the second tier of heroes + Trunks deal with it.

Obviously that won't be the case though. =(

you know when you said earlier that you were familiar with the literary sense of the term? You lied.

I have read epics, drama, comedy, adventure, ect. Comedy epics can work, but the first story arc isn't one of them. There is no danger or real threat until the last minute. The adventure isn't even that long being 13 episodes. If Dragon Ball ended on the first story arc, it would be a nice story, but hardly an epic.

But I lied. Okay.

I'm digging the colors and overall desolate feeling of that preview. Shit looks rough and serious. It's about time, I'm over these "tee hee hee" kiddy episodes and want something where there is a sense of danger and hopelessness.

Yes, it is. Dragon Ball is and always has been a kids' show.

Except it's not.

I would be willing to bet the vast majority of fans are not kids - especially in the West. Anime is designed to be enjoyable for all ages. There is clear difference between Dragon Ball and genuine kids shows.

its western fans are people who watched dragon ball z as ...kids

It doesn't matter who the fan base is or how many kinds of people enjoy it, Dragon Ball IS a kids show, this is a fact.
Even now with the new arc Toriyama says that he hopes "The kids enjoy it".

Now to be fair, "kids show" doesn't mean anything.

It's a shonen, okay.

Look at Hunter X Hunter. And Bulma's boobs in Dragon Ball sure as hell were beyond anything a kid show would do by our standards.

It is intended for kids but it never stopped author to write stuff they like, and they're adults... So it's a bit of both.
