Nintendo @ E3 - No Direct, Just Zelda Treehouse Stream

I'm slowly starting to really anticipate seeing Zelda next week, despite being disappointed in Nintendo's overall E3 plans. I think part of that has to do with me not expecting to see a whole lot that excites me from Sony and Microsoft. Man, I really hope this game delivers.

They'll throw Zelda fans a bone and put out Link's Crossbow Training on the eShop for free* during E3 week

*Zapper accessory sold separately.

I think you're overestimating the power of Metroid...

I'm not saying a remastered Metroid Prime would save the Wii U or anything, just that it would go a long way to pleasing Metroid fans who have been waiting for something for ages, and that's not even getting into the Federation Force stuff.

Plus the Wii U could use a game with a lot of praise, and Prime 1 especially was a critical darling at the time of it's release and likely still would be today. Same for Galaxy.

CDI Zelda HD collection.

Followed by the revival of the Legend of Zelda Cartoon Series.

Well excuuuuuuuse me Zelda fans

Definitely a good idea but it's likely too late for that. I don't think Prime HD or Galaxy HD would really do much for Nintendo at this point, money wise or goodwill wise. Their efforts and budget are likely better spent preparing software for the NX launch and beyond. And before you say they can outsource the ports, it's probably a better plan for them to use those outsourcing companies to prepare ports for the NX launch.

I just don't think throwing Wii U owners a bone will do anything at all to help Nintendo now, when focusing attention away from NX could be somewhat disastrous for them. I myself would love some more games to play this year but from a business perspective it's likely just plain not worth it.

I was thinking about the Mother 3 rumor and was wondering how they would announce it within the current set up that they have for E3 (assuming that it's real and gets announced at E3) and I thought that doing something similar to what they did with the Earthbound Beginnings announcement at the World Championships would suffice. Have Reggie start off the show with him doing the usual speech about E3 and how Zelda is special and how this year marks the anniversary for the series and end with a trailer for Mother 3 as they transition into Pokemon. It would make sense to announce something like that at the start, assuming that they do.

We'll get all of that except release details and Collector's Edition.

That's gonna be closer to release.

Yeah, because it's also coming out on NX I could see them saving a lot of stuff like that for the inevitable NX media blowout. They usually have a press event in September right?

Dream away but don't expect anything new. Nintendo needs every gun they have for the NX launch, they're aware of how much is riding on it. At best we might get an HD remake or two, along with a smattering of VC games (like Mother 3).
Yep. They don't care about the Wii U and they shouldn't. If they can squeeze a remaster or two for the second half of the year that's fine, but all hands are on the NX deck and I'm fine with that.

Really looking forward to seeing what new mechanics are in this game, personally i would like to see a truly dense open world system.

Then only 9 to 12 months away before we can play it.

I just hope they nail the voice acting. Zelda with the usual 'anime-eque JRPG voice actors' would kill me. That's something we should be able to tell right away. Would rather British & Irish accents than American, too.

If there's no voice acting I'll shake my head at how far behind the curve they are, but at least it won't have the potential of ruining the game for me.

Aren't we getting a massive Nintendo 3DS RPG translation by Treehouse on Day 2? They might announce it during that one.

maybe don't get your hopes up about an unprecedented lineup. i don't think they'll go all-out in grabbing every third-party game under the sun. instead, expect a more 'curated' lineup. the 3ds in 2016, especially in north america, is a really good idea of what i would expect.

So literally zero western third-party support for NX?

Sounds about right.

A lack of voice-acting isn't behind the curve, how do people even come to that conclusion? That's just a more is better mentality. Sometimes, less really is more and sometimes an informed decision should be made in regards to what is incorporated into a game instead of just doing what everybody else is. Don’t get me wrong, I'd be fine with voice acting in Zelda, but I don't believe for a second that its absence thus far is a representation of how far behind the curve they are. That's like saying somebody who makes a black and white or silent film or a hand drawn animation is behind the curve when it’s an artistic choice. Are their monetary benefits from doing so? Yes, likewise it probably saves time but like I said it’s a matter of weighing up the pros and cons and making a decision. Nintendo has made voice acted games, from Xenoblade to Kid Icarus they have just chosen not to with Zelda.

Why's that? All sword-swinging, tunic-wearing fantasy characters have to speak like Monty Python or you can't suspend disbelief? ;)

It's because I am Irish, so American accents are simply more 'foreign' and irritating to me. With a Brit cast I tend to forget the accents immediately and just get into the character. With your standard JRPG dub cast from America I can't do that, and typically reach for the original audio + sub.

It's just a function of where I'm from, I guess.

If you're making a arthouse film, then shooting in black and white or making a silent film isn't behind the curve. If you're sinking tons of money and years into a blockbuster action movie to compete with the Avengers and Batman etc and you do the same you'd best believe you're simply behind the curve.

Zelda is Nintendo's blockbuster adventure franchise. These kinds of games have almost all been properly voice acted for over a decade. The lack of voice acting stood out like a sore thumb in Skyward Sword, robbing some important scenes of their sense of drama - and that was 5 bloody years ago.

Not having voice acting would definitely be behind the curve.

Are we expecting more Amiibos to be announced? I can't believe we're only halfway through the year and (at least what I'm aware of) I'm not interested in anything Nintendo is releasing for the rest of the year. That's a first.

Aside from Cloud, Bayonetta, and Corin's Smash Bros. amiibo's to be released, along with the figurines for Monster Hunter Story and Callie and Marie for Splatoon, I'm unsure what else there is to come out.

It would be nice if they celebrated the metroid and Zelda anniversaries with amiibo releases, but I doubt it.

I have literally no idea how you came to this conclusion. The lack of voice acting forces the devs to use animation and facial expression more to show emotion. Beyond that, I believe it forces the games to feel like an actual fable or story. Fully voiced Zelda in the vein of Mass Effect or Elder Scrolls would totally kill that charm for "blockbuster" aesthetics. Like this actually confounds me how you believe this.

Walls of colorful text with accompanying chimes on screen isn't exactly charming, and is probably hurting the potential of the franchise considering the direction of the people who bought and loved Ocarina of Time in 1998.

So any word on what they're doing on day 3 of E3? Just repeats of Day 1 and 2?

Who knows. Maybe? I honestly didn't even consider it, to be frank.

The Zelda seems more likely, but after how indifferent people were with the Animal Crossing line, I think they will be more considerate with how they'll continue with future lines.

And the Metroid series is nonexistent at this point in time, so you can forget about Federation Force getting anything.

Could the full reveal of Zelda offer any hints towards the NX since it's really the first official title for the system?

I highly doubt it. Unless they actually show off NX footage (which they wont), I don't see how there's any way would could gleam NX hints off of Wii U footage.

Yeah definitely. If the game heavily depends on gamepad screen functionality we can safely infer that the NX will at least be compatible with a screen controller for example. Same with amiibo capability. We'll also likely be able to determine how many button inputs the NX controller will have at a minimum.

Pretty much stuff like that.

I disagree with the screen controller. You don't need a screen to do things on a "normal" controller. Like the stuff they showed a year and a half a go at TGA are things you can do a Wii U Pro Controller, for example. Anything that deals with the map you can just open up a map by the press of a button.

That's why I said "if." I'm just talking about things we might learn from the trailer/hands on impressions. If the game has a very strong focus on touch screen interactions, like drawing on the screen to control your boomerang path for instance, then we can assume the NX will support as screen controller. If not then we won't know.

There are only going to be streams the Tuesday and Wednesday (unless they make yet another announcement about a third day).

Now, on the show floor, it's going be playable Zelda for the entire E3 run (Thursday - Saturday).

So I have been thinking in the last day or so how dungeons are going to work in this game.

Do you think people are going to want just the standard eight dungeons in different places in an open world, just basically a big version of Ocarina of Time? Or would it make more sense to break those dungeons down into smaller parts across the open world?

I think this Zelda will be a bit more like Skyrim than Aonuma is willing to admit based on some of his comments from a few years ago. By that I mean I'm expecting a large number of smaller 10-15 minute dungeons in addition to some number of large, standard Zelda sized dungeons. Maybe less than 8, probably not more.

Option one would appease many who feel Zelda has yet to transition its formula into a meaningful display in the modern AAA scene. I honestly think that would be the best for exposure/critical acclaim.

Option two would likely solve core issues of suspected stale implementation of the standard formula. Interspersing dungeon elements throughout the world would also scratch the itch of those clamoring that Zelda needs to adopt Dark Souls principles.

I went on a little ramble there, but I honestly don't think they could go wrong doing either.

Are you unable to appreciate the drama in literally every Zelda game, then? Whether you're playing a Zelda made in 1998 or 2011, what difference does a lack of voice acting make if the writing is solid?
Beyond that, I believe it forces the games to feel like an actual fable or story.

Exactly. God forbid Nintendo expect players to have to read and use their imagination to fill in the character's voices.

I really hope they don't have voice acting mainly because I like to make up voices for NPCs.

The past few console Zeldas have used a sort of voice acting where most NPCs make little "grunts" when you speak to them, so you already have a particular voice for then implanted in your mind. It's not a huge stretch from there to fully fledged voice acting. Either way voice acting is way down on my list of features I care about for this Zelda.

Actually now that I'm thinking about it every Zelda since OoT have had those grunts, just more frequently in recent games.

i was looking at the Zelda wiki the other day - i didnt realize it was 7 years between LttP (11.91) & OoT (11.98) - the longest gap between console Zeldas

itll be 5 yrs since SS this yr (nov) - which i had forgotten came out a week after Skyrim

30 years...

One thing I hope will actually be announced is a new Nintendo character for Skylanders Imaginators, and also a new version of DK and Bowser that look like they had proper care given to the manufacturing and paint job, since the Superchargers figures of them are AWFUL! :'( It's weird since the other figures look just fine. Thanks Activision. :/

Is that more like Skyward Sword in a sense?

Kinda cool considering how significant the number of 7 is to both games: 7 sages, 7 temples, 7 years asleep in the Sacred Realm, etc.
