Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

I recommend avoiding auto OC software. AI Suite installed some nasty low level hooks that caused my Windows 10 machine to take a really long time to shutdown. The only fix was to reinstall Windows 10.

It also took some messing around with custom batch files to actually allow the installation since Windows 10 doesn't allow you to run an installer that calls other executables. The tool also failed to set a stable overclock. It did an okay job until it started pushing BCLK. At that point, it failed to revert the BCLK and I had to resort a manual overclock anyways.

I had the SAME issue where Windows 10 wouldn't reboot. I managed to eliminate the issue by uninstalling that ASUS software.

Yeah, niche games like DOOM. Ugh, I'm so ready to get off SLI for a while. Single 1080 FTW should keep me happy at 1440p.

I wind up playing a good cross section of games, but no COD or any of those war games. I'm not running 4K though, so if a game wasn't supported it usually wasn't a huge deal. Doom seemed to run pretty well with 1 card while the support is coming, but I didn't play it a whole lot since the 1080 replaced it a few days later. I don't usually buy 2 "weaker" cards though, as I bought the 980's launch day.

Goal was to use them, then relocate to a pair of other SFF PC's in the house, which is where one of them is now. Been too lazy to swap the second one in. Pondering whether to pick up a second 1080, but so far pretty pleased with 1 at 3440x1440.

If one of your arguments for SLI being a great experience is that a single card is still pretty good then I think that's pretty damning ;)

Not trying to argue a point really, just share my experience. I went into SLI knowing that it wouldn't support every game, and that I might have to wait for support occasionally. My eyes were open, and it was better than I expected, that's all. A lot of people really seem to hate it a lot, and I don't get it.

My guess is that if I had been running 4k and it was SLI that really made it playable, then I would have been more dissatisfied.

Monday, June 6th and still nothing about release dates from anyone.

Why do manufacturers behave in this way? Do they really just not know? Some communication would be nice either way.

Wonder if we'll see non-FE 1080s come out before the FE 1070s land.

We know about the release dates for some of the EVGA cards. FTW at least should be shipping next week

Was hoping for higher FTW clocks, but it's just more confirmation that I should have ordered the reference PCB + ACX3 cooler for my custom card.

Can I please throw my money for an asus strix. At least tell me when in the us I can buy it 😡😡😡

Take this for what it's worth. Posted on Nowinstock.net
"Said it yesterday but DM'd JJ from ASUS and he said "I have noted since the announcement it would be early to mid June. This
will be accurate. It comes down to multiple factors including
distributors and retailers setting up the product for their systems and
then actual reception and inventory. I would expect to see hard
availability by the middle of the month if not earlier. I will do an
update sometime mid next week"

Yeah, now that you guys mention it, this is merely a +13 boost over the SC... though I still want to believe that the extra power and phases would help with OC stability. We need reviews :(

It seems we're looking at a product that doesn't have a lot of headroom, so we have a bunch of unnecessary product SKUs at various manufacturers. EVGA is trying to squeeze in the SC, FTW, Classified, and the eventual Kingpin ... and there just isn't much space for all of that.

I don't have a problem with the 1080 in general, as NV seems to have dialed in the clocks pretty well with reference. Just leaves a lot of unnecessary models in the pipeline, barring some surprise.

That's a good point. They'll all OC the same from what we are hearing too.

So middle of the month I can possibly buy it ☺️

My guess is that we'll see all the cards launch around the same time. Middle of the month. The Gigabyte G1 seems to be the only one releasing this week. Who knows in what quantity, but from their twitter at least 100 will hit Newegg tomorrow.

The 2 bios should be useful at least.

I know this is the 1080 thread. but I have a question...

For the Strix 1070 will there be a switch or anything you'd have to change in a program to get the OC speeds?

I know some cards have a switch on the outside or you have to go into whatever their tweaking program is and change a setting on the mode you're wanting to use or something...haven't seen if the Strix is like that or if it just has the one OC'd mode out of the box

I think it's a program. Check out the 1080 product page, I believe it shows it.

Guys, good news!

I contacted MSI Headquarter once more to ask a better date on to when it will launch. They told at 6AM on June 10th the MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X will be released and available for purchase. If you guys want to verify you can reach the guy (sales department) MSI number at: 1-626-913-0828, Extension 201 for sales. You will get a guy he will give you the date I said.

More info from Nowinstock.net. This matches previous rumors of a 10th release.

Yeah, if reviews of the FTW conclude that the extra phases and power doesn't help sustaining a considerably higher overclock than the SC can accomplish, I'll probably just go for the SC. 40€ difference after all.
Maybe BIOS modding could help though? I've never done this so I don't really know what to expect. Oh well, we'll see.

The Galax HOF got to 2.2 on air. Not saying that's is high as this thing is going to fly, on air, but I doubt it's going to be much higher than that. Considering the reference is capable ~2050-2100, it may be worth saving the coin.

Walked into a Frys and they had an MSI 1080 Founders just sitting there. Bought it. Don't regret it, but probably will. When that comes I'll sell it and pay the difference for whatever is the best at the time. I've accepted it. Having this setup sitting here wasting space when I've had time off was getting to me. Probably sell it and grab a 1080ti. I bet that value will be $350 in 8 months. Damn is it gorgeous at 3440x1440 though. It is somewhat loud with a higher fan curve, but from all the complaints I thought it was going to be way louder.

I always forget Gaf is the extreme enthusiast. Realistically the fans aren't that loud. Are they louder than I'd like? Yeah, but the performance is so good, even on a founders. May buy an aftermarket cooler eventually too. Considering it is 116 degrees F outside, it is running relatively cool.

I think the point is you can get a card that is quieter and cooler for 70 bucks less, not that the FE is too loud. The FE looks nice and is out already, that's basically it's advantages, which is fine is that's what you are looking for.

Nope, Nope, Nope. My iGPU is great. I will wait. I will.

Congrats. Enjoy it. EVGA will have a hybrid cooler with your name on it.

If I get the EVGA Non-SC model I can just manually clock it at the speed of the SC version, correct?

Yep, that's my understanding, too.

I'm with you on that. Even though the FE is a little more expensive, I'm gonna look at it as a convenience tax for being able to avoid the "hunt" for the partner cards that this has turned out to be.

My G1 has been sent and is arriving tomorrow. Yay. :D Thanks EBuyer for not being a shower of cunts over charging then making people wait for pre-orders.

Yessir. Or, if you prefer, you can flash it with the BIOS from the SC. A little bit of a learning curve at first if you've never done it before, but once done you can just play your games and not have to futz around with Afterburner/PrecisionX.

Yeah the FE I've been using has generally hovered in the 1850's with no change to fan curve or anything else. Sure, I can push it down to the mid to high 1700s if I use a synthetic benchmark that ensures it's pegged at 100% at all times, but I don't play benchmarks. It's very quiet at that speed. I don't think it gets bothersome until 65% or so, and even then it's a dream level of noise compared to some reference coolers in the past.

You have to remember that most people bitching about the FE are irritated with the price and many have never even used one.

Better get my G1 cancelled from Amazon. Don't think I want this one, especially with all the tax. May make a run at being the first 100 from Newegg tho.

Don't forget us when it arrives!!!

So they are just charging extra for overclocking it for you? LOL Thanks I just saved $70

Yes. A lot of people don't like to/know how to mess with it themselves.

lol, yes, and beyond the FTW as well.

So the premium is merely for a BIOS with built-in overclock settings? Do they do any kind of testing at the factory to ensure that it holds the overclock well or are you really just paying for a different BIOS that you can flash yourself?

That is exactly how I am looking at it. I've been refreshing this thread probably hundreds of times a day. Have had NowInStock on full notifications. Just been waiting. $100 for convenance is relatively okay when I spend $3k on a new rig.

Congrats. Enjoy it. EVGA will have a hybrid cooler with your name on it.

That is what I've had my eye on! May just wait until the to, but having that option is great.
