Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

I wonder when we'll have real stock of the custom cards here in Spain...but at this rate I don't expect it before the end of the month.

Total paper launch.

So since asus customer support is shit should I buy the strix from Newegg or amazon? I want to buy from newegg since I dont have to pay for tax in new york but I don't know how returns work with them.

I've had one headache with a return a long, long time ago. They were trying to charge me a restock fee on a bent case. I just wanted a replacement. I just kept the case because I was tired of fighting it.

But I usually don't have problems with them.

I really hope the Newegg strix card goes up soon. I'm having Lasik done tomorrow so I hope I don't miss it.

Sorry. Had to do it.

Newegg G1 just went in stock and sold out in like under a minute, people are ravenous!

I've got a B&H pre-order in... but I'll cancel if I see a Strix or EVGA card come up for sale.

Bit noisy - 40db on auto settings, but stays at 69c. Apparently that drops to 36db if you let the temperature go up to 78c

40dB in their measurement is pretty quiet actually. 980TiG1 there gets 45dB and that's noisy. Xtreme should be even more quiet though while being faster.

If I'm gaming at 1080 (have a 144Hz monitor) and also have a Vive, should I go 1080 or 1070? I've been thinking 1080 for future-proofing since I usually only upgrade my video card when it starts to get long in the tooth.

Another reason I'm wanting the 1080 is just because it's (sort of) available, and not sure when the custom 1070s will actually start showing up in stores.

There is no difference between 1070 and 1080 in "future-proofing". Both will be ~$200-300 cards by this time next year. If you want to kinda protect your investment then going with 1080 is a bad idea, 1070 will loose less of its price in the coming months.

I highly doubt that Volta will arrive next year. In fact, I'd be absolutely shocked if it did.

Edit: In fact, Nvidia already said 2018 for it. The same goes for AMD with Navi, so this definitely isn't happening.

If you don't frequently replace cards then grab a 1080 and enjoy it. If you don't see yourself swapping g displays though, maybe a 1070 to avoid wasting money on overkill.

Considering the 980ti (with a lower initial MSRP) is selling between $425-525 on eBay, $300 in a year for a 1080 is highly unlikely. It'll probably take 2.5 to 3 years to get to that level.

Just in case it has flown under the radar for some people I thought I'd bring the Inno3D iChill Air Boss X3 to your attention.

Am going to wait for reviews before I buy it but considering that 1080s don't appear to be overclocking above 2050MHz on average I'd say that considering it has a boost clock just 38MHz lower than the Asus Strix, which is £90 more expensive, it's looking like a good buy unless you'll be able to fry an egg on the thing lol.

They also have a 4 fan version for an extra 20 quid too but it runs at the same clockspeed.

Mind you, all of the other cards appear to be going up in price recently so maybe the Inno3D cards aren't too far behind..? :o/

They don't need Volta next year to launch an 11 series where GP104 will be used for 1160 and 1170 cards retailing for $200 and $300. Look at 700 series.

Based on the Computerbase review, this card seems like a good choice if you want really quiet and don't need extra overclock potential (not that any of these cards have any?). The cooler is at its limits in regular use, Computerbase had the fans running at nearly full speed but it remained relatively quiet with temperatures at around 80C. If you live in a really hot place, it might not be a good card for you.

I could live with those limitations. I'd buy one right now if someone had stock but no stock, no buy.

Waitaminute, I thought someone said that the MSI Gaming X wasn't coming out until the 15th..? I just got a shipment notice (Norway).. lol

the only games on that list > 30 are bf4, battlefront, black ops 3 and rainbow six. all games you pretty much need 60 fps. the games are designed around it.

bf4 - that performance is bad and is probably a big reason why hes so bad at the game. siege of shanghai is also close to a best case performance scenario outside of metro/locker. other maps perform much worse. hes also not even playing 64p conquest. performance takes another hit irregardless of map with all the extra action vehicles and higher player counts bring.

TR - not even close to maxed out and his performance is still iffy despite the video taking part in the highest performing part of the game. performance drops off a cliff once you get to the meat of the game(hub worlds)

gta v - settings/fps not even shown. ign editors are complete idiots tho and i doubt they would even know how to max the game out if they wanted to

crysis 3 - not even using any aa and hes still dropping below 30 fps in one of the least demanding parts of the game with no action on screen

QB - not maxed and still constantly dropping below 30 fps

the division - not maxed out and hovering mostly in the low to mid 20s.

witcher 3 - not maxed, no hairworks

unity - not maxed, again no aa. barely holding 30 fps and hes not even in paris yet

syndicate - video poster notes between 15 and 30 fps and thats with 2xaa, not even 4x. not even close to playable

dragon age - not maxed

rainbow six - no settings or framerate but a 1080 is not faster than titan x sli when sli works

black ops 3 - titan x sli here again and i was referring to single player

To be fair, for a lot of people AA isn't necessary at 4k, let alone 8x. Anything above 2x and you're just talking about maxing out for the sake of maxing out unless you have a 40+ in screen.

The only reason to do that is if we don't get a 1080 Ti, but even then those prices are ridiculously optimistic, to put it lightly. $250 and $400 maybe, but there's not a chance in hell of a full GP104 hitting $300 or a one cut to 1070's specs hitting $200 unless AMD really kills it more than they ever have before. I'm talking about a cut-down Vega 10 (the smaller one) RX 490 beating 1080 at $400 while RX 480X beats 1070 at $300, and that's obviously not even remotely realistic.

Here's ComputerBases noise test video for Asus Strix, Inno3d Ichill and Gigabyte G1 1080s. Sorry if already posted.
EDIT: Video is now hidden, wonder what for..With quick watching, it sounded like Strix was the noisiest and Ichill quietest.

EDIT2: Ah the video is still watchable on their website

I asked this in another thread but there were no takers, so here we go again...

Because 1070s are cut-down version of 1080s, will they be more readily available? I imagine the 1080 has to be pretty pristine to pass the smell test where to qualify as a 1070 it can have a few blemishes, meaning more wafers are usable for the cut-down version.

Is it more random? Or do only a small percentage make the 1070 cut?

It varies from country to country, region to region. One Finnish store got 10x MSI Gaming X just over a week ago, last Wednesday but no stock at all since then. I have actually one of those MSI cards ordered from two different shops. This Monday one shop changed their ETA to 06.06. so basically the same Monday, but nothing happened, no cards and now no ETA at all. The other store apparently got some stock Tuesday, my order went from pre-order to processing, can't cancel it anymore, it showed product in stock for the order and.. then nothing. Half a day later the in stock logo vanished from my order but my order still remains in processing state. Two close calls and now no ETA at all.

In two days time there's a whole new bunch of cards that become available for pre-order with zero stock. If that wasn't enough, China goes on a 4 day national holiday tomorrow so that screws things up even more at least for some companies. Not that they don't deserve the holiday, it has an awesome name after all: dragon boat festival. I wish western holidays had names like that.

It's supposed to work similarly to this, but the difference is going to be based more on demand unless yields on full chips are low.

My guess would be yes. They're disabling 5 SMs so it has 15 rather than 20. Theoretically they can do that by starting out making 1080 chips. Those that have no faults become 1080s. Those that have faults in SMs can have those disabled and become 1070s

Between that and the use of GDDR5 instead of 5X, I'm hoping 1070's are more commonplace. One of the rumors I've seen is that GDDR5X is actually more of a limiting factor right now than the actual GPU's.

I have a GTX 680 and am looking to upgrade once the aftermarket cards come around, I'm pretty sure I'll get a 1080 so I can be set for several years but my main question is: should I also just do a complete rebuild of my system while I'm at it? Or is just upgrading the graphics card good enough? The 680 has served me very well over the years, and I'll be donating it to my younger brother since it will destroy all of the games he plays.

Current specs:
GTX 680
i5-2500k OC to ~4.1ghz
16gb DDR3
SDD: 850 EVO 550gb

If it matters I have a 1440p 60hz dell monitor. I may be able to get away with the 1070 but I think I'd rather just go with the 1080 and have it last me an extra year or two. I'm also semi-interested in a gsync 4k monitor at some point.

So:
- Only upgrade from the 680 to the 1080, perhaps rebuild the rest in another year or two, or
- Do a complete refresh now, donate my unused components to younger brother.

What would you do? If I do a rebuild I can throw about ~$2k at it including the 1080.

I was in a similar boat. I had a GTX680, intel 3770k, 8 GB of DDR3 ram, 180GB SSD. I decided to do a brand new build with a fractal design define (I've wanted a fractal design case for a while) and modular power supply. My old rig will be given to my parents because they keep complaining about their computer. I don't regret doing a brand new build one bit!
This was my part list: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/QCwhPs

Any word on when the rest of the MSI line up is being released? I'm hoping the Sea Hawk or the Armor are coming out soon.

Where the fudge are any of his reviews!? He gave it all the lemon about bombarding us with 1080 videos 2 weeks ago, and pretty well nothing! Awesome.
