Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

I swear Amazon is gonna cancel my $611 G1 preorder because fuck me
All these price hikes are worrying me
I think your worrying is unfounded.

I've only experienced canceled orders like this with third party sellers. And also your price isn't so big of a discount off of MSRP to be concerned.

You should be good

EVGA SC Packaging Impressions.

Ok, so it's pretty barebones as far as packaging is concerned. No biggy tho. A big pain in the ass that's guaranteed to piss people off is the plastic that they used to wrap the aluminum bits. I believe the put the plastic was put on before the screws. So every screw collects a chunk of plastic as you pull it away. I tried every method I could, but every screw has a nice chunk flapping in the breeze. You will need to get the star shaped screwdriver and take out every screw to get the plastic off.

1070 is about 20% slower than the 1080 and %4 faster than the Titan X based on the games tested....Hmmmmm.

These 1080s not being in stock are unintentionally helping me make a better decision.

I think it all depends on what you need from a card

since my main concern is 1080p (and possibly downsampling from 1440p on occasion) the 1070 is what I'm going for...wanting to get a Strix or FTW but may be a while unless I get lucky and catch one on pre-order after Friday

yeah looks like I will be returning mine.

Not about that coilwhine, I should have stayed true to my EVGA

Yeah my new gpu will be evga too

I went with asus this time and ended up with coil whine (thankfully only at 150+ fps but even then it's annoying as shit as many games have 1000+ fps in menus)

Ugh, that stuff is awful. Pretty sure I have some of those screwdriver bits though.

Yeah that's definitely the smart decision for me too, though I do want 1080p 144Hz. I just need the 1080s to never come in stock so I dont just happen to buy one.

like that's my thing, sure I am in a closed case so I probably wouldn't hear it and only game that goes over 150fps is overwatch and cs go? The overclocking doesn't bother me (well kinda lol)

ugh I forgot I can't return with newegg. I just remembered why I said I wouldn't buy from them again :/

Watched the Jay vid and I have a question regarding the silicon lottery. Will cards, such as the MSI Gaming X, mostly fall within a certain limit because they will put the chips that "won" the lottery in a more expensive cooler?

So for example, MSI tests a chip and it looks to overclock well, so they will put that card in the Gaming Z design pile. They test another chip and it performs at average so they will put it in the X design pile, and so on and so forth. Thus, you have no chance of getting a highly overclockable Gaming X card because MSI has already filtered out the chips that "won" the lottery and these lucky winners are reserved for higher priced card design?

Damn, really wanna get an order in with Newegg since Amazon charges tax in my state. The timing when those go up and I check this thread is funny.

Seems I'm out of the 1080 waiting game. Turns out I'm not going to have much chance to play any games for the next few months, I'll probably get this in September when I'm free by which point prices should have dropped, stock should be in, and maybe by some miracle the 1080ti will release within EVGA's 3 month step up period. It's been fun, but not really -_-

Got a regular EVGA 1080 ACX 3.0 coming in the mail tomorrow, thank goodness for my random checking of r/nvidia. Initially I had a FTW preordered from Amazon, but I decided to go ahead with this one. It really seems like the lack of OC headroom means that this cheap one will be just fine, and I'll push it as far as I can.

I've been running crossfired R9 290's for the past two years, playing at 4K. I have had many issues with the setup, and am tired of tweaking it to get everything running. This 1080 will help out so much, especially with using the Rift.

Can't wait to join you guys! Another big plus is I can finally stream 4K60fps games from my computer to my nVidia Shield TV, something the Steam Link can't even pretend to do.

That sucks. :/ 1080 Ti won't release before January though, so you'll want to wait a bit more if you want to take that gamble.

Oh you can hear it ,closed case or not

At high enough framerates it sounds like a kettle is boiling

It's most likely people cancelling orders. I their system automatically adds them back in stock when someone cancels.

Yeah, it's not just the EVGAs popping up, the others are doing it sporadically too. Some people have gotten the Gigabyte G1s off a random pop too.

The thirst is real for these cards. And this is the $600 one. Those people looking for 1070s? That's hell you're walking into if you are going to go after a 1070 at launch.

EVGA SC Overclocking

EVGA SC 2125 GPU clock 5500 Memory 73C. It wasn't getting passed 70C until I boosted the memory.

tumblr_lrjhiofp841r3opg1o1_250.gif

and which games did it hold that clock stable in?

Still working it all through. Only thing I've run is the Heaven Benchmark. I started playing Doom, which I have maxed at 1080p and the GPU doesn't get passed 50C.

I just moved to Seattle and am staying with family until my apartment is ready, so I'm on a makeshift desk in the corner of the basement trying to get all this going.

I'm no professional OCer. First PC build in a long time. I'm gonna set it up and let it run for a bit.

Aw bollocks. So much for me not spending any money on my credit card until I get my 1080. Amazon have 16GB of 2133MHz HyperX Fury Black DDR4 for £39.99. At that price it would be rude not to lol

I thought so too but dr_rus has been hearing that it may be out oct-dec. Should have a better idea by that point anyway.

There's a slight chance that they would push it up if AMD pushes one of the Vega chips up, but that might really strain HBM2 supply.

Edit: Oh, it looks like Nvidia isn't giving consumers HBM2 any time soon...

It can vary at any time on any product, a lot of it depends how long the GPU manufacturer will test and to what threshold and how good the batch from NVidia is. For a super specialist card it might be worth them testing to the max to satisfy the customer. Generally it's not worth their while so they do a series of basic tests to a certain threshold which mean a lot slip through on to other cards as the limit is unknown and also you could have many chips test high but you only make small amount of this special card so one half of the good chips will get used up across the product line anyway.

Plenty of people have had golden chips on low medium and high priced cards of the same GPU line and vice versa. Also you could have a chip go further with more volts than another.

50c? are you on water or playing v synced games where the gpu is underutilized?

ugh that wounds me.
I really like the design of the MSI.
Well Newegg said they will take it back with no restocking fee, so it's just a matter of waiting it out.

The most obnoxious thing is that since it's framerate dependant the pitch changes constantly

loading screen/menu where you get 1000 fps? high pitched whistle
ingame at 150 fps? low buzz
fps jumps up to 200? higher pitched buzz

Sometimes my gpu sings me a song

The severity of coil whine differs from gpu to gpu too, some people even have coil whine at 60 fps
For my gpu it also differs from game to game, in some I get 200 fps and nothing happens, in dying light (the only exception) it seems to happen even at 80-100 fps

Nope. Air. Doom maxed 1080p and the temp sits at 50c. It's 35 at idle.

I am getting throttling down to 2088 after long term gaming. I'm goofing with it now to see what I can get to stick past 15-20 minute mark.

I haven't noticed any coil whine on my FE card. Hmm, we'll see how the FTW cards turn out but I might just stick with this one.

I have had some coil whine. It doesn't last, but I've heard it every so often.

The trick with coil whine is to not sit with your computer right underneath your feet like many people do when they are using a typical computer desk and monitor.

In my case, my computer is way the hell over there ---------> because I game on a comfy couch on my TV. I never hear coil whine.

I mean, yes, that is a way to get around hearing it constantly if it bothers you, but that doesn't solve the problem, it just puts it out of audible range.

Hardware Unboxed made updated benchmark videos for the 1080 & 1070 with the new Game Ready Driver from yesterday

1080/1070 Benchmarks
1080/1070 Overclocking Benchmarks

The 1080 seems like a very solid upgrade over the 980 Ti, overclocked vs. overclocked. I'm glad I sold my 980 Ti and made the move up to 1080, I need every frame I can get pushing 4K on my gaming setup.

Putting it out of audible range isn't solving the problem? I mean practically speaking, you can't really get rid of coil whine because of the inherent cause. So, you have to solve the problem a different way.

what framerate in doom, and what fan speed. gpu usage >95%?

the trick with coil whine is not to have coil whine

the fact that you can pay 700dollars for a gpu and it made it through QA while having coil whine is retarded

coil whine was never an issue in the past , only a very rare problem, now it's common as shit and noone seems to give a shit

I'll second this.

The solution is not to put up with stupid shit that shouldn't be busted in the first place.
