Even if this guy killed everyone in Orlando, US will never ban guns or do anything about it other than "our prayers are with ______" and "Mental illness is a terrible thing, we should do something about that sometime"

It is sad.

As I said it would be nice. But replace "drug wars" with "gun wars" and you've got the same wack-a-mole situation

It's not even the same? Drugs are things that make you feel good. You can get addicted to drugs. People buy them for all sorts of different reasons. To make drugs you just need chemicals or a place to grow a plant. Guns need steel, molds, and factory conditions. Logistically it's just not even in the same league.

You can't get addicted to a gun, normal people won't seek out guns if you make it impossible to buy one without going through illegal means. And the rarity of guns will drive up the prices so low level thugs and drug addicts will be priced out of the market.

You can't solve murder. But you put a gun in the hand of someone they're more likely to pull the trigger than if they had a knife or something similar. And that alone will drop murder rates more than anything else.

Some folks will happily dismiss any change and/or reinforce the status quo because nobody's bringing up a "make all gun crime go away" magic button. It's a terrible argument.

It's like arguing against cutting back on carbon emissions because one person won't magically make global warming go away.

We even have the whole "humans were once barbaric warmongers hundreds of years ago so things are clearly much better now and today is awesome" dogma being spewed. Great way to dismiss addressing anything.

Hey if people want to indulge in a fantasy where "back then" was better, I'm more than happy to disabuse them of the notion.

FFS does it need to be spelt out in every thread with guns?

Its about MINIMISING HARM.

it will never happen. I think the problem is more cultural than anything. Both our laws concerning guns and of our handling of mental patients. The kind of laws we both want will never happen here, it;s just unrealistic, from the country's mentality to the sheer number of weapons in play, not to mention the money involved. I would love to see strong gun laws but I know it's not going to happen. So I advocate for better mental health and better education instead of these feel good laws they keep passing that don't change anything.

It'll also drop the rate of successful suicides.

It's the second Amendment. Amendments are not easy to overturn.

Being an asshole is not a mental health condition. The fact is, there is a large amount of hate propaganda in the States, and legions fester in it.

The second amendment doesn't guarantee the right to own automatic assault rifles, nor nuclear weapons. "The right to bear arms" can be interpreted in many ways including ones that are much more restrictive than what we have now.

People assume you have to be mentally ill to kill someone. Its naive as shit. Not to mention the mentally ill are much more likely to be victims of violent crime than perpetrators.

Right. You have the "right to bear arms" in Japan, but it's so heavily restricted, there's around 2-3 gun-related deaths per year. Getting to that point in the US could take decades though, there's just too many guns already out there.

I was simply replying to the comment that guns would never be banned in the US. Whatever you extrapolated from my comment does not necessarily reflect my beliefs on the matter.

What the fuck is wrong with this news feed? They keep repeating the same shit over and over and show people like that crying mother who obviously shouldn't be on tv. Crazy.

18.2% of the US population has some form of mental illness. The "mental illness" card is such an obvious distraction to the real issue of guns.

We can confirm this is a mass casualty situation. Support from local/state/federal agencies. We expect to brief media shortly.

You just described to perfection what TV news does in case of breaking news like this.

The unfortunate consequence of the digital age, people want news and answers immediately.
It happens all the time with these situations.
Also, I guess the repeating news is better than dead air.

Wtf is going on in Orlando right now, so many tragic events the last couple of days :(

I really do hate this stuff. What is "increased mental health care" going to do compared to stricter gun laws and more gun control? How can you be so sure that shooters in America obviously did it because of a mental illness?

They're rationalizing it away by spouting NRA rhetoric. Just like the 'ole "I'm a responsible gun owner" schtick which is actually the case for pretty much any gun owner up until the moment where they cease to be responsible and carry out a gun-related tragedy. In short, they've been brainwashed and don't realize it.

You do need to overturn an Amendment in order to ban guns though, which is what the original person I quoted had suggested.

The point of the second amendment was to repel a possible second attack from the British forces. It is entirely superfluous in this age, or for a good long while now. It's sole purpose is to justify the personal firearm industry and its lobby. If people saw these people in the same light that the tobacco industry gets, that would be an actual reflection of reality.

While I would agree with you, this really isn't the time to bring your agenda to play. There are people in danger of loosing their lives right now

This is what people always say but what I never hear is someone saying when the right time is.

Just horrible.. My thoughts go out to everyone affected by this. Hopefully it's true that the shooter(s) is neutralized, and can't cause anymore harm.
