I want to see an in-game comparison of the costume instead of an in-game compared to a cutscene. Well, not that I think the Japanese in-game version was modified like the Western one was, 'cause that's obviously not the case.
On the eve of E3, it's funny to look back at my Game of the Show 2015 and just be completely over it. I'd be morbidly curious about hearing the reasoning for these changes down the road, unless it's something as mundane as "they were random."

That being the reason would be far from mundane, though. There'd be an interesting story behind why the changes were made randomly, whatever the motivation for it was.
It seemed to work for Fire Emblem. People kept screaming about the lack of face-petting yet the game still sold insane numbers.
I doubt it will work here but you never know. Maybe it needs a dumbass "Torrential Downpour" thing
Wait, what the hell is going on with that horseback picture? They intentionally blurred it so it appears completely out of focus? That's "horseshit" and man, that's "lazy devs" sort of a solution.

Noand this one is the most tenuous of the changes that were pointed out in the pastbut it's the "panties into spats" change that was originally leaked from the 4chan leak. The second shot is just taken from a moment with more movement.

Ahh, again, cheaply done, but I was fearing they blurred the shit out of the scene for some reason (at this point not sure what to even think ).
Overall though its not even the changes that get me but inconsistency and doing the changes at the lowest possible quality.
Change underwear to pants - lets just reskin to fake pants
Change underwear to spats - lets just put a black spot there
Change cleavage on a boss - put a black sphere there
Change wedding dress - reskin to white
All of the above could have been done well artistically without making this whole thing seem arbitrary and cheap. Hell, there was one pic where they put a tank top or something under a shirt and it didn't look bad for once.
Wasn't there a dungeon design change as well because of one of the char changes?
A whole new costume created exclusively for the English version of the game to replace Tsubasa's swimsuit transformation scene. If the changes were all of that quality, then I'm sure the complaints would have been much lessened for what they're doing, even though that seemingly messes with the story/theme of the dungeon.
So unhyped for the game. Reminds me too much of persona which killed my hype. I had a terrible time with persona 4 which everyone lauded as the best Vita game. Maybe if I wasn't so stuck up with 100% the game from the first play through, it would have been a better experience. But too many gotdamn choices triggered my ocd of trying to get the best of everything, eventually, I just gave up.
Now, I never really played much fire emblem because i was never really a strategy type of gamer, but I alwayed like the artstyle of the characters (not so much the new ones) and had always mained Ike and Marth in smash brothers. Yet, I'm not seeing any resemblance of them here. Probably too vague for someone like me to see which killed my hype even more unfortunately.
Hope for the best for the game. But it just doesn't look like the type of game I'll be interested in.
Edit: not to mention the whole idol thing it has going for it, is abit too cringey for me to handle
Haha, that's right! Pelvic shading was an important one.
The best change, included in that compilation post above, was definitely this one:

That's a good illustration of a proper way to do things. Yeah, while there would be some complaints, you won't have people pissed off at the quality of the change. Yeah, some would like to have swimsuit remain, but at least the new costume is well done.
So you have that but then at the same time there is a ton of other changes which look like an intern went over them with a broad brush in a day or two.
Its crazy to me that they are spending money to make those changes while at the same time losing potential sales, even more now that Wii U piracy is so easy. This game may end up being the bomba of the year . Im talking sub 10k numbers

Thats just a guess , I have no desire for it to sell that low, it seems like the combat mechanics are really solid and the dungeons are fun. Which makes all this even more sad.

Maybe in terms of effort but considering it's effect on the narrative it's probably the worst change of the bunch. Still a step up from Fatal Frame leaving her in default costume though.

I thought that costume looked rad when I saw it a while back, and I still think it looks rad. That was an excellent change that looks like some work went into it.
I guess it might ruin the narrative, but hey, at least it doesn't look like complete and total butts.
EDIT: Also, considering that we've seen swimsuits elsewhere, that change still makes no sense.

At this point it's looking more like Nintendo making a statement than a rating issue. The game was most likely not headed towards an M to begin and even if it was there are too many inconsistent, excessive, and arbitrary changes to things that weren't going to make it M material. The DLC certainly wasn't going to make it M and they cut that out right off the bat.
I mean if the thinking was to try and carry Splatoon's momentum with younger audiences I could see the point but it's far too late for that and the lack of a dub kills any chance of that anyway.
You could be right about it being a statement and not rating but I really don't know. It so weird. This is by far one of the most tamest, inoffensive, and non probmatic games I've ever seen that's had such content changes such as this. And I really don't see why for most of them. Maybe I've just lived in Japan so long that I'm lost on these things back in the west and what is and isn't allowed. But all these decisions have done is just made many of those interested in the game mad to the point it's probably going to do even worse than it was going to already.
It's a shame, a damn shame. Such a fantastic game, and it's being treated in a way that it shouldn't. You would think especially with the western persona delay people would be excited to at least get there hands on this Atlus rpg but instead it's probably just going to end up being a forgotten gem in the end.
I just hope what we've seen is all the changes. If there were more it's just going to sour people's expectations of future Nintendo releases with content similar to it. But I do hope those that get it enjoy the game that is still there, even with these unwanted and unecessary changes.
In the first stage of that dungeon with the photographs, the photos were censored as we all already know.
In the second stage of that same dungeon, those photos change to photos of Maiko wearing a bikini in the Japanese version. This was changed to a summer dress in the North American version. I saw it in one of the trailers Nintendo posted (I believe for the battle system trailer?)
Very mild spoilers.
During that "chapter" of the story in Japanese, you and your friends come across Maiko in a magazine doing a bikini beach shoot (you're looking for it for reference). Since those dungeon photos were censored, that means that this magazine will have to be changed to a summer dress beach shoot to match.
Which is a bit weird, as Maiko is clearly an adult character, even in the past when she did that shoot. But you can't have Tsubasa suddenly wear a hip outfit instead of a bikini and then suddenly have her use Maiko's bikini's photos as a reference as that won't make sense. So you have to change that story.
Because they're changing the photos, thus changing the magazine, the setting of that conversation is going to have to change entirely.... which either means Atlus is going to pull of the grandest "don't listen to the voices" text lines, or they're going to have to rerecord that scene with the magazine in Japanese for the three initial main characters.
There's also "reactions" that they're going to have to censor to catch up to this change (Touma has an amusing reaction, but it won't make sense in context with the change, as does Tsubasa). So they're going to have to re-animate those characters.
I believe (speculation) they're also going to have to rerecord lines for Tsubasa in the beginning part of that chapter. After all, there's no reason to be embarrassed about wearing funky street clothes on camera, especially when you've already sung in front of a lot of people. But it would make sense if you were being photographed in a bikini. So that dialogue will either be weird or changed to be not about showing skin and more about being... photographed despite being filmed earlier? Yeah I have no idea. Maybe they're not concerned about making it believable.
As mentioned before, I feel bad for Atlus. While some people do have beef with them, I don't think this is the kind of issue they ever wanted to wade into. They're just following the rules of their publisher. And to think people asked Nintendo to buy Atlus...

This is the straw that broke the camel's back for me when it came to canceling my order. Generally I just roll my eyes at dumb censorship, state my annoyance, and move on. But I can't get over completely changing story beats and this garbage is 100% a deal breaker every single time.
People should not support this game and NoA for this kind of nonsense.

I want Nintendo to get the message that it's NOT okay to butcher games and that someone at NoA is doing something really awful.
And I *sincerely* doubt with every fiber of my being that that part of the story is going to somehow end up being better. Not with all the half-assed, gross changes we've seen, especially after the Wedding Dress shenanigans.
I'm surprised people are saying they like that new costume, I think it looks atrocious and is the worst change of them all.
Firstly it completely misses the point of the original - why not have another costume that is supposed to make the character show themselves off without being a simple bathing suit (I dunno, something like a Bond girl dress as a basic idea). There are ways for women to play for sex appeal besides just showing skin and instead of attempting that here they've just changed the scene completely.
Secondly it screams of trying to find what people think is cool in a way that just makes me cringe (but maybe it is cool, what do I actually know).
Thirdly I think it just looks bad. It's busy and it's stupid. And it doesn't mesh with the art style of the game, which is the biggest offence to me.
I don't see the point of ageing up the characters to avoid particular issues relating to age while also adding in stupid changes like this that completely alter the tone of the original. Like, surely you age up the characters so that the tone and designs are more acceptable to westerners instead of just altering them altogether.
My actual theory as to what's going on here is that there was originally a very extensive localization process underway, including a heavy sanitizing of the content, but it got its budget slashed big time after the game went over like a wet fart in Area 11. I don't know if that's how things really work but it makes sense to me.
Wow, this new wedding dress edit is cheap as hell.
Still can't believe how nintendo is doing do much efforts for stupid edits on a really niche game, making mad part of the audience that wanted this game in the first place...
Hilariously sad, some really weird managerial decisions there.
I already posted in the other thread, but I also see no sense in this change. I mean, why did they change the characters age if they still aren't allowed to show anything regarding cleavage or similar stuff? That age change was just completely unnecessary, if they still change god knows how many outfits.
The censorship and changes being made still doesn't bother me that much. If anything I am starting to find it annoying since it seems pointless. I wonder what the reasoning and logic is behind all these pointless changes at this point.
Its crazy to me that they are spending money to make those changes while at the same time losing potential sales, even more now that Wii U piracy is so easy. This game may end up being the bomba of the year . Im talking sub 10k numbers
No, this is not happening because even the W101 managed to sell more than 100k copies in North America when all was said and done and this game is even less out-there in concept (traditional JRPG vs weird mix of Strategy and Character action game) and backed by 2 well known franchises (Fire Emblem and SMT to an extent)
Hope to see you in the OT after you buy the game then.
Not specifically for you, but too many times I see some people dropping in those threads to say they love those changes and then never buy the game afterwards...
