Mass shooting at Orlando gay nightclub [50 dead, 53 injured]

According to MSNBC the shooter's father said his son became angry when he seen two men kissing a few months ago. So this probably was indeed a hate crime.

Do we have a semblance of a clear motive yet? Seemed like a clear hate crime, but of course you have Rubio yelling "RADICAL ISLAM!!!"

Which is it? Or is it both?

It seems at this point with not enough facts it mostly depends on your definition of terrorism. It was definitely a disgusting hate crime. But unfortunately, as long as the killer is brown, there will be some labeling it Islamic terrorism immediately.

After Christina Grimmie's tragic death, and this massacre of fifty people, I'm at shock and in disgust that people are actively defending the current gun laws. What will it take for you all to realise that the current gun laws are fucked up and not working?

It's more important for assholes to shoot and kill as many people possible in as little time as possible than it is for their victims to live. The Founding Fathers wanted it this way.

I doubt he kills 50 people without an assault rifle. Someone would have tackled him when he was reloading.

Really? I'm sure terrified people are able to make decisions like that when they don't know if he's the only shooter and it's mass panic. Pretty sure everyone was just trying to flee for their life.

I can't believe over 100 people were shot by 1 person. It's just mindblowing. So scary the world we live in today.

These soft targets like bars and clubs make it easy to inflict massive damage with relative ease. I live in the UK, but after the Bataclan when I go for a night out this is often in the back of my mind. It really shouldn't get to me, but it does.

Right to bear arms != Right to bear all arms and carry them everywhere.

Keep your sidearm at home for protection, not in the streets. That's really all you should need. Anything larger needs to be locked away at the gun club or wherever you go shooting.

If one is serious about banning guns to minimize deaths... banning handguns and allowing AR/long guns for sports/hunting will lead to better results than the other way round.

Obama please address the gun violence issue before you leave office. Mandatory background and psychological checks for purchases.

I can just imagine Trump and company rubbing their hands with glee so they can use this to further their anti Muslim rhetoric.

If he couldn't do anything after Sandy Hook Elementary (which shook him to his core) thanks to Republicans and the NRA ... how could he ever do anything now with 6 months left in office?

Sigh...

My heart goes to the victims and their families.
I really hope something can be done to address the gun issue (yes, there is one), because we will never be able to prevent 100% people blowing a fuse for X reason, or having a terror -bound agenda.

I stopped trying to have intelligent conversations about gun violence with people months ago. The fact that people will jump to defend this countries gun culture in the face of so much senseless loss of life is fucking disgusting to me. I think of myself as a pretty even keeled individual, capable of having civil disagreements with people on almost any topic. But I can't talk about guns anymore. I've lost my ability to have a civil debate on this topic.

Fuck guns, and fuck the NRA.

Of course, me being in a Christian home, my family has been taking this...uniquely. I'll leave it at that.

I'm just speechless. How the hell is this bullshit still happening?

I'm assuming that this is the shooter so do we know if he's a US citizen? And does his NYPD shirts mean anything? Did he go through the academy? Because if he did, he likely had to pass a psychological evaluation first.
Shirts mean nothing. They can be bought at any tourist shop in NY.

Do we know why he was in Orlando? They said he was a Fort Pierce citizen, which is like 2 hours away. Seems bizarre to specifically target a gay night club so far away when he had plenty to choose from closer to is home.

Do we have a semblance of a clear motive yet? Seemed like a clear hate crime, but of course you have Rubio yelling "RADICAL ISLAM!!!"

Which is it? Or is it both?

Radical Islam is a possibility, the question is whether part of a cell or self radicalized.

The second is becoming more of a reality, and frankly it is scarier because it is harder to track and prevent. It is those instances that heavy gun control would help.

Worked for a security company that provides support to the U.S. government, this just gets better and better.

Pretty horrible failure on our tracking part if that all turns out accurate.

Horrific attack. The stuff of terrorism / domestic terrorism nightmares.

Judging by the amount of threads that unfortunately got created in the past few years it will get worse, much worse.

I find it shameful that some people just can not mourn the death but have the need to defend their stance.

This is not the time nor the place for it.
When would be the time and place for it?

Originally, sure. But so are a lot of guns that people don't consider as dangerous based on looks alone.

The gun in the image above can be fired just as fast as an AR 15. And yet because of its "old" look, most people think it less dangerous than the AR 15. Now, you can do a lot more tactically with the Ar 15, it allows for various attachments (scopes, lights, etc). But the bullet firing speed is semi auto, just like the gun in the image above.

An AR-15 was involved. That's why we're talking about the AR-15. "But other guns are just as deadly" is a moot point.

If he didn't have an AR-15 he would've killed 50 people with a knive...

Are you kidding me america?! Politicians blocking stricter gun regulations and the people supporting them have blood on their hands.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: America lost the anti-gun movement when nothing happened after 20 children were killed in cold blood.
Yeah, after Sandy Hook it became clear to me that part of this country's moral and ethical fabric was completely gone. If that didn't motivate some substantial change, nothing will. We have utterly failed as a nation on so many levels.

Those jumping to Islamic extremism, hold a few more hours. There is no clarity yet on motive, and the few tea leaves we have so far outside of his name are pointing towards it being purely a hate crime.

It's weird when gun nuts act so ignorant about guns. We're not talking cosmetics, we're talking ergonomics. The pistol grip, barrel length, stock etc -- these are specifically designed to make the weapon more effective in combat. Unlike the SL6, the AR-15 was designed specifically for armed forces.
I'll go toe to toe in a 3 gun match with a Ruger Mini-14 against an AR-15 any day.

Yes it's more comfortable and better suited for combat and AR-15, but against a crowded place where you just have to fire indiscriminately it makes no difference at all.
Man you are fucking right, why didn't I think of it that way. Of course. Damn I'm dumb, thanks for setting me straight.
Are you upset in life about every potential danger despite it never materializing?

It's the scariest danger of all from what I'm hearing, a true lone wolf that just decided to act out. How do you stop that in a digital world?

Well, the nice thing about lone wolves is that they are lone, they shouldn't have the resources or capability to pull off an attack of this scale.

Would it be possible for gaf to set up a gun control debate thread so we don't have to have the same arguments take over every thread about a specific tragedy? Don't get me wrong, I think we have a huge fucking problem with guns in this country, but I would like to be able to read and talk about the actual events without having to wade through 100s gun control back and forth bickering posts.

MSNBC apparently interviewed the father of the shooter and the implication there was hate crime. Father says that when out with Omar and Omar's son, they saw a gay couple kissing and that angered Omar (something along the lines of "I cant believe they are doing that in front of my son"). Similar incident occurred in a bathroom that Omar was in with his son.

Now, why that might have triggered this attack, why he went to Pulse in Orlando (the events in the previous paragraph occurred in Miami), and why he drove the 100+ miles from his hometown to Orlando are all bigger questions.

The thing that MSNBC also pointed out was that this guy is a US native, born in NY.

No criminals that have guns, care to obey gun control laws that are associated with them.

Call me when criminals in the US start regularly using tanks and fuel air bombs because clearly those objects not being available at Walmart shouldn't mean shit to a criminal, right?

I do not know who is crazier. The people who cant live without a automatic rifle or the people who cannot live in a world where gay people exist.

This is a slight exaggeration but still. Rest in Peace to all those who died.

I disagree. I think a man should have the right to bear arms and not depend solely on the protection provided by the state. When you start to increasingly give personal responsibilities to the goverment is when you start losing your freedom.

Nobody is going to assault you at your home anytime soon or maybe never. Calm down.

The media uses "assault rifle" a little freely when the full-blown military variants are actually illegal. That said it's not hard to modify the ones you can buy legally. You can find tutorials via a simple search on youtube, even.
I wonder if we will finally learn from this tragic event
Half of legislators will say this is a great example as to why we need a database of Muslims. The other half will say this is a great example of why assault-style weapons and large ammunition magazines should be illegal. So yeah we're not going to collectively learn anything. Shooter was born in the US but that won't stop anyone from promoting bans for visitors.

That this was a gay nightclub is going to automatically conflict a certain percentage of the public, too. Gays are an abomination, but were killed by one of those pesky Muslims? That's rough. ...I hate this country sometimes.

If anyone in here is in Orlando or can travel there, our hospitals are in urgent need of O-negative blood. Please donate !

This is my hometown. I grew up near Pulse. This is a nightmare.
