Mass shooting at Orlando gay nightclub [50 dead, 53 injured]

Of course, me being in a Christian home, my family has been taking this...uniquely. I'll leave it at that.

I'm just speechless. How the hell is this bullshit still happening?

I feel this... not looking forward to my parents getting home from church to hear about their opinions.

The ease with which people can get their hands on a device that hurls projectiles designed to kill humans is staggering. It's a real problem, but I fear America is too far gone to change significantly regarding it. I understand people want to defend themselves - I get that a person doesn't want to have to fist fight a violent intruder, for instance. Still, with no end in sight to shootings like this, 50 lives gone and hundreds if not thousands of lives irreconcilably devasted, I do what the plan is going forwards. Ignore it? More guns?

Absolutely tragic. My heart goes out to all the friends and family impacted by this.

This is truly a horrific tragedy. So much has to be addressed in this county including the gun culture that is so prevalent. I also don't understand why addressing this or any crime by Muslims as being Islamic terrorism would make any difference. In the contrary, I hope that those who think it would should realize that it would only empower the terrorists.

Calling an AR a "sporting rifle" is utter bullshit. Nowadays people buy AR derivatives to look tacticool as shit and play soldier, or because they're preppers. You don't need a 30 round magazine to hunt deer.

Speaking of spin jobs, this thread was heavily leaning on gun control talk before there were any signs of Islamic terrorism. So... just stop.

Pretty much, even if it wasn't Islamic terrorirism, it was an act of terrorism regardless.

Yet, I see the words gun control used 1000x more than terrorism.

I'm assuming that this is the shooter so do we know if he's a US citizen? And does his NYPD shirts mean anything? Did he go through the academy? Because if he did, he likely had to pass a psychological evaluation first.

Yeah, that's the shooter. And no, he just grew up in New York, not a cop. A security guard apparently.

My heart hurts so bad omg my thoughts and extreme prayers go out to everyone I wish I could do more...

For those asking his shirts aren't recruit NYPD shirts from the academy or offic polos. They look like those ones tourist buy

Those jumping to Islamic extremism, hold a few more hours. There is no clarity yet on motive, and the few tea leaves we have so far outside of his name are pointing towards it being purely a hate crime.

Look, even when facts come out you'll still have Fox News spurring up hatred for brown people.

It's especially disgusting because the primary victims are another minority marginalized by the same demographic...

Out of curiosity, where do you live? I know it's not in the US, and yet you're always in threads concerning gun violence in the us out-posting everyone else, seemingly every single time.
Denmark, it concerns me because a lot of opinions bleed across the continents, and there's also a large segment of posters in this thread that are clearly not American themselves being outraged over gun laws they don't understand.

The stranglehold that gun nuts have the US in is tragic. There is no sane reason for one person to be able to carry around a weapon that can take down 100 adults single-handed. I don't blame the killers anymore, because they are obviously just completely insane. I blame the people that argue for their right to carry around a military-grade arsenal.

Can we please stop the gun semantics argument please? Nobody is coming to take your guns. in fact sales of AR15s and ammo will go through the roof.

50 people are dead and the media and politicians have already moved the goalposts to terrorism while ignoring the fact that a terrorist can very easily buy an AR15 and ludicrous amounts of "sportring" ammo

Your guns are safe guys.

You do in Texas to hunt hogs. Those are some mean motherfuckers, destructive as all hell, and hard to kill too.

50 dead and 50+ injured in the matter of minutes? Wow RIP. Fucking disgusting... It feels like the news coverage of this isn't nearly as massive as it needs to be

The lack of sympathy and coverage of this is incredibly disturbing.

RIP to all the victims, no one should ever have to go through this.

It's just a bunch of faggots.

Contrary to what the last couple years might appear to tell you, most people wouldn't give a fuck if we were killed more and more.

If anyone in here is in Orlando or can travel there, our hospitals are in urgent need of O-negative blood. Please donate !

This is my hometown. I grew up near Pulse. This is a nightmare.

Yeah great to see tons of people donating in the wake of this. Lines reportedly over an hour long in some places in Orlando. Lots of friends myself in Orlando.

I'm O- but in Illinois. I hope this message spreads though and the hospitals get what they need. O- can donate to anyone, but only receive from other O-, right?

Well, the nice thing about lone wolves is that they are lone, they shouldn't have the resources or capability to pull off an attack of this scale.

There is no lone wolf when you have the full backing of the United States to purchase as many guns as possible in the quickest time as possible.

The United States government and anyone who does not support more gun control are complicit in this attack.

There is no lone wolf.

Holy shit 50 people?! Absolutely horrible.

I'm all for tighter gun regulations but come on it's not like guns are the only source of violence. Homemade bombs are not difficult to make and they can cause more damage than a firearm.

Well, they're also completely illegal.

BBCreporting 20 dead, 42 injured. Hopefully more accurate than past reporting

That was the count from earlier this morning, BBC is probably not caught up.

Gun laws aren't going to change much.We have made it clear time and time again that these deaths are acceptable for us. We are a nation that believes guns are more important than human lives.

I know this shouldn't at all be the focus of this discussion, but does it bother anyone else to see all of the sad face emojis, "Holy shit wow" and other similar reactions in this thread? It just feels really disrespectful, intentionally or not. 50 people just died and you're going to use the response I'd text to my friend who had to work late? I don't think a sad face emoji is really an appropriate response to a mass murder.

What other fucking words do you want from me? do you want a thesis on how I believe gun buying should be reformed? Do you want me to write a really long post eulogizing each and every victim?

Fuck off with that.

More than 100 people's lives were affected in a terrible way in one of the few spaces that us queer people actually have in this shitty fucking world that just wants us dead. So fucking forgive me if this event leaves me at a loss for words.

Would it be possible for gaf to set up a gun control debate thread so we don't have to have the same arguments take over every thread about a specific tragedy? Don't get me wrong, I think we have a huge fucking problem with guns in this country, but I would like to be able to read and talk about the actual events without having to wade through 100s gun control back and forth bickering posts.

We've had multiple gun control only topics in the past to clear out mass shooting topic threads of these sorts of posts. OPs may as well start two threads for every US gun tragedy, one for the tragedy and one for gun control discussion (three if the word Islam is involved).

The way this shit is going, we should also make a tragedy megathread. :-/

Too often man....too often.
