Yes let's handwave one of the prime causes, because, I don't know why.

No, let's not politicize and argue about the damn shit we do in every other gun related thread every time people die. Hand waving would be me saying guns had nothing to do with this. And i'll tell you why if you cant stretch your imagination to figure it out. Because gun politics derails threads and will never be agreed upon. You're already ready to argue with me because you presume me to be against gun control. This is what im talking about.

This just makes me disgusted. This is the 174th mass shooting in the U.S this year, 13th this month, seventh since Monday.

Father's comments apparently:
article
The father of the shooter in a terrorist mass shooting which took place this morning in Orlando, Florida, has apologised, said the incident had nothing to do with religion, and said he did not know it was going to happen.
Various news sources cited law enforcement officials in naming Omar Mateen as the shooter in the incident which killed as many as 20 people and injured 42, including a police officer.
The US citizen’s parents are from Afghanistan, and FBI agent Ron Hopper spoke to reporters to say that he may have leanings towards Islamic extremism.
The shooter, a resident of Port St Lucie, Florida, was killed after a “gun battle” with police officers in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Now Mateen’s father has apologised for the incident, saying he did not think his son was religiously motivated.
He also said that his son, 29, got angry a few months ago after he saw two men kiss in Orlando.

Why are people so attached to their guns?

making a thesis right now on the argument..at least for what i've read,it basically boils down to guns being the embodiment of the american stereotypical values,freedom,individuality,toughness...all garnished with a sense of power and an extreme distrust of the government, and sprinkled with a bit of old west mythos with humanity divided in good guys and bad guys

Yes, because I come from a family that first hand experienced the pain of a totalitarian goverment. This is what happens: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Reorganization_Process

It boggles my mind that people are giving away their rights willingly. That kind of behaviour can only come from someone who has never experienced this kind of state.

You actually think your ability to own a semi-automatic gun would stop the US military from setting up a junta if it truly wanted to?

Jesus 50 people now? Sadly I think the closest we'll get to meaningful gun control out of this is Trump calling for a temporary ban on fire arms sales to all Muslims...after Sandy Hook I have zero confidence in congress' ability to regulate this shit.

After the countless mass shootings, we just aren't going to learn are we? :/

RIP to all involved.

That's the thing. If Sandy Hook didn't induce change, nothing will. The numbers will just keep going up. I fear fact the suspect is of Afghan origin also makes it all to easy to brush this aside as a terrorist incident rather than again expose the lunacy such weapons of thus nature can be obtained in the first place.

The difference between France and the US is that in France the shooting was a one in who knows how many years event. In the US, it's a daily occurrence.

50 dead (perhaps more) in a single shooting spree isn't a daily occurrence. This ranks up there with Paris and Brussels.

Oh, and France has gun deaths too you know.

I've been saying this for pages, and have been completely ignored. Put the politics in another thread. I'm not saying it's not a necessary conversation, or that there is a better time to have it than now... but not in this thread.

Yep there needs to be a gun politics OT just for the sole purpose of keeping these threads from turning into shitshows

I know everyone is upset, but arguing with other Neogaf users isn't going to change gun laws. If you truly care about gun laws, stop posting on this forum and write your replies to your governor, people in office, whatever. Write a blog. That's more useful than a post on Neogaf.

I just checked in on this again and --- *FIFTY* dead????????????????????????????

50!??!?!

and 53 injured?!?!?

I might need to be corrected but doesn't that make this one of the worst mass shootings ever?

Bless those poor people

You are expecting threads based on incident to not contain speculation of their cause?

I think you're being really hopeful.

I didn't think there would be so many deaths. RIP to the victims, and I hope their families will recover too.

How many guns and ammo did this guy have that he could have killed and hurt so many just by himself?

50 dead? Jesus Christ America sort yourselves out :(

RIP to the victims.

edit: OK, maybe 20 and not 50 according to other reports in the thread and not the title... still.

I can't imagine Fox News is going to be... fair and balanced, about this.

God just...

Why. Why us? Why can't we just have one fucking space where we can go without fear? Now even our own safe spaces are being taken from us.

Oh my god, this is so horrible. My thoughts go out to everyone impacted. This hits really close to home since I've gone drinking in Orlando quite a few times. The thought of something like this happening in Downtown Orlando is beyond scary.

Why the fuck would he get mad seeing two men kiss and then say it wasn't religiously motivated

It seems that the only people who care enough about two men kissing are those who are religious

Either way, RIP to the victims and fuck all assholes who are against freedom of personal expression. Fuck them all. The world would be better off without that kind of intolerance.

The worst in US history.

Incredibly sad news. 50 dudes out for a nice night out and this happens. What a world we live in.

To everyone calling for changes to American gun laws. Unfortunately I don't think it's as simple as that anymore. The sheer volume of guns already out there means that you would be looking at a ridiculous amnesty for people to hand in guns that they have paid a lot of money on and spent a lot of their time practising with.

The government (Obama aside) will not have an appetite for the kind of financial outlay to make it worth people's while to give up their firearms especially those who are increasingly feeling the need to be able to protect themselves with everything that is happening at the moment.

I do not know what the answer is and it sure as he'll can't be the status quo, I feel that the NRA seems to have more power and influence.than it should which seems to be preventing an open and honest discussion about what you guys need to do about the problem you have with gun crime atm.

Thoughts and prayers with everyone affected by today's atrocity.

This is a discussion forum. I would argue trying to convince others on a message board is more effective than writing to your governor or starting a blog.

Hours after approximately 50 people were killed at a Florida LGBT nightclub in what federal officials are investigating as an act of terrorism, the Lieutenant Governor of Texas is receiving backlash after tweeting a verse from the Bible.

About 7 a.m. Sunday Dan Patrick tweeted a photo with the words of Galatians 6:7. The verse reads, "Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows."

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AR-15

The AR-15 is a military and civilian gas-operated rifle that has been produced in many different versions. The term "AR-15" was chosen by Colt for the civilian models it produced after selling the rifle to the US military as the M16 rifle, and many people and references use the term "AR-15" exclusively for civilian models
