Nope. Many people who are not religious hate homosexuals.

It's ingrained from somewhere, and usually rooted in religion. If not directly, then via osmosis from family or other peers who have learned it from religious roots. People aren't just born wanting to kill homosexuals.

Looking at his twitter, he posts this stuff all the time. It looks like a scheduled tweet. I don't like the content of it, but I don't think it's related to this incident.

Often there are inconvenient scheduled tweets that go out in the aftermath of these events and appear tone deaf.

wonder if isis will claim involvement.

A new message purporting to come from an ISIS spokesman called on followers to launch attacks on the United States and Europe during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which begins in early June.

"Ramadan, the month of conquest and jihad. Get prepared, be ready ... to make it a month of calamity everywhere for the non-believers ... especially for the fighters and supporters of the caliphate in Europe and America," said the message, suggesting attacks on military and civilian targets.

The authenticity of the audio clip, purporting to be from Abu Muhammad al-Adnani and distributed on Saturday by Twitter accounts that usually publish ISIS statements, could not be verified.

"The smallest action you do in their heartland is better and more enduring to us than what you would if you were with us. If one of you hoped to reach the Islamic State, we wish we were in your place to punish the Crusaders day and night," Adnani said.

Btw, what happens if some of the victims didnt want to be outed as gay?

Seems like the media will eventually plaster their faces on the screen, but what if some of the victims wouldn't want that?

Reporting the victims is standard procedure, it's the media doing their jobs (for once). It is unfortunate if some are outed like this, but what the hell are they supposed to do?

Fine if we're gonna talk guns. You all need to take a step back on the ban it's not gonna happen ever. They're over 300 MILLION guns in this county. Good luck banning. I can't tell you what can be done, because I don't know. But banning is never happening.

I really hope this was just a coincidence and he didn't mean it as a response to the shooting. I mean if not what the fuck...

Honestly, it doesn't matter, it is one of the most insensitive scriptures that is pulled from the bible. Look up Pat Robertson, who uses this line of rational to say we are getting what we deserve.

Guys, lets divide what religion can mean here.

1) General religiosity, which can lead to bigotry against the LGBT (individuals of all religions can aspire to this)
2) Islamic Extremism meant to show sympathy and allegiance to a foreign caliphate
3) A hybrid of both of 1 + 2

Also, religion is not required to be bigoted against the LGBT community.

Any of the above are still possible, regardless of the guy's name.

I need a time out.

Even if this tweet is unrelated to the event, you just know many people will spout this kind of garbage. If I hear shit that implies anything remotely similar to this in real life I don't know how if I'll be able to handle it elegantly.

A fucking Lt. Governor of one of the most important states in the union thinks it's not only not wrong, but that it's JUSTIFIED to kill or seriously injure 100 gay people because we're gay.

This country is so fucked.

There's nowhere on earth we have to go that's really safe.

Fuck. I'm done. I'm just done I can't talk about this anymore I'm fucking beyond terrified now.

Brother, what do you think AR stands for? You're doing some mental gymnastics if you're going to stand by that argument?

Also, do you really think it's hard to modify an AR-15 to go full auto? There's a huge aftermarket parts economy around tricking out your "semi automatic sporting rifle."

This is a hilarious post and a clear illustration of half the replies on GAF where the poster acts like he/she has knowledge on the subject matter even though they are just bullshitting for the sake of posting.

and even though it's probably not the intended meaning this mass shooting is america reaping what it sows.

What's the point? That wouldn't solve anything.

We need to ban gun politics from these threads, too. Both sides of the argument. It's just redundant, will never reach any conclusion, and will derail every thread about casualty events every time, which is bad for the discourse of the thread and it becomes outright disrespectful when posters are flinging shit at each other over gun legislation.

We cannot ignore the situation regarding gun violence and the insane US gun laws which enable mass shootings such as this.

I am against a ban of discussion of this problem.

Can we talk about homophobia instead of gun laws?

How about we talk about his motivations a bit considering fifty fucking people died and I'm angry and afraid and holy fucking shit I thought we finally got past this kind of shit happened.

I thought the US had finally at least gotten to the point where I didn't have to worry about being fucking killed for being gay. It had taken a long fucking time but I thought we'd at least gotten THAT far.

Terrifying.
We can talk about both.

I'm sorry that this thread is an affront to your sensibilities.

AR stands for ARmaLite. It's not easy to modify rifle parts without some sort of education and training, but it IS possible, just will land you in prison if anyone knew. Selling this requires taxes, registration, and a weapon age requirement. They sre not professionally machined outside of military applications. If he used an automatic capable upper, he likely machined it himself.

Pedantry.

It's a rifle designed for assault.

Yeah man, it would be too difficult to ban guns, lets not bother.

It's still not fully automatic, neither are the popular "slide fire" stocks.

Even then, slide fire stocks have been out for years and years now, I've yet to hear about them being used in crime.

The difference between an assault rifle and a "sporting rifle" appears negligible when it comes to killing people so unless you are advocating banning AR-15s, I have no idea why you are arguing about this so much.

Not sure why people are so hung up on the "assault rifle" thing. Even a standard hunting weapon or a handgun is ridiculously dangerous in the right hands.

People could argue handguns are for self defense and hunting rifles are of course for hunting but what about assault rifles? The hell does anyone need those for?

Way to miss the point, though.

Nah. Just correcting a myth.

That Dan Pateick twitter post is fucked up. Not quoting it though.
I honestly expect nothing less from Texas government goons.

If the murder got mad because he saw two men kissing, then it's religiously motivated. Islam despises homosexuality much more so than any other religion. Being an ex muslim who studied the holy book, Islam is pretty clear on these things. It's also during Ramadan which makes crazy people even crazier.

I was devastated to hear this news. I feel sick to even think about how could a human being do such a thing. My heart goes out to all the families affected. I hope this motivate the congress to put in strict gun control in the near future. Mass shooting happens by weekly bases and something has to be done about it.

Just read that the amount of people killed is 50 now. What a terrible, terrible loss of life.

It shouldn't be a fundamental right. That is the whole problem. Nobody needs an assault rifle for day to day life. A handgun for home protection, I can understand. Anything above should only be used for hunting or sports and locked up at the gun range or club.

You're holding on to something written hundreds of years ago. Update the law to reflect modern times.

you mean - amend it?

I have no idea why people are so keen on entrenching certain aspects of the constitution when it has already been amended. It should be a fluid document to reflect societies needs.

Though it is statistically more likely.
Yes it is more likely but first things first this was a homophobic attack on LGBT+ people simply for loving who they love. His motivation was seeing two men kissing. Maybe he is Muslim, maybe he is athiest, he'll maybe he's a Christian. I don't think we have solid confirmation on that bar his parents nationality. The majority of religiously motivated terrorist attacks are claimed as religiously motivated by attackers. We do not have that information yet. All we know are LGBT+ people were targeting and executed in a mass killing.

We don't have to ignore it, I'm not saying ban gun politics discussion, im saying ban gun politics discussion from casualty event threads. We can have a separate thread for that discussion, is my proposal. But it would also require a redirection of these conversations toward there and an understanding that that's where it belongs.

We can talk about both.

I'm sorry that this thread is an affront to your sensibilitie
s.

Oh go fuck yourself. NOBODY IN THIS GOD DAMN THREAD IS ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT HOMOPHOBIA ON A MACRO LEVEL THAT'S WHY I BROUGHT IT UP.

The gun argument is the same circular crap it always is.

i would still argue that in many or even most cases the homophobia is still rooted in religion even if the homophobe him/herself is not religious.

Yeah well, and that's to far fetched to call this as a radical islamist attack. Many Christians also hate homosexuals. Everything goes back to education. Lets blame education.

Ah, thanks for pointing it out. Didn't think to check.

Yeah, I feel the root cause is a religious background, but it's also "the other", which can affect any group of people, regardless. Humans can just be never-evolving shitbags that can't deal with anyone that isn't doing something their way.

Think for a minute. Do you seriously think a republican politician from Texas supports a muslim terrorist killing americans?

Jesus, people.

Terrible news. Not sure why this is being labeled as a terror attack though. It sounds like your typical American mass shooting.
