I doubt it's this as it would prevent selling thier own accessories. But we will find out.

Also that price someone posted at $450 doesn't seem right, even with a 2TB drive. I can see it being more only if it has better hardware (I hope for MS sake ). A higher priced XBOX at this stage isn't going to help them unless its a significant upgrade.

Those standalone players have a huge markup, the drive itself is not that expensive.

That's a bullshit reason. You can still buy BR players that are more expensive than the UHD BR player. The drive is not what it makes expensive.

I couldnt figure out why Sony is bringing out Neo with PS4 doing well, but I think here is how it went down.

MS could see they are badly losing this gen, and hardware performance is a factor, so they develop this counter measure.

Sony gets to hear about this and are sufficiently concerned so Neo

I think it might end in tears for consoles with consumers mixed up what to buy with concerns on length of lifecycle so they dont buy at all.. Consoles arent considered by consumers like smartphones (i.e current for 18 months..) Hope I am wrong though.
