1) What does forward compatible mean?

2) Will future XB1 games all be playable on Scorpio? (i.e. a Neo or DS Lite situation) Or will there be Scorpio exclusives?

i think it means that it can run games that are developed for future Xbox versions.

Like, your iPhone 6 can run an app that was written post iPhone 6S.

Or, your gameboy could RUN gameboy color cartridges (but of course not display the colors)

So...
Microsoft pretty much already called quit on this Gen while announcing Next Gen, and admitting of still milking this Gen.
Ok..

I'm in,
Next Year when the Scorpio is available. Sounds like a beast.
It feels a bit like they are trying to throw a wet blanket on console sales (mostly to slow down Sony) until the Scorpio launches with the hopes to turn things around.

it depends what PC you build now. You'd have to build a 1070-1080 based PC to be more powerful right now. So a high end PC to beat that. But next year when Scorpio comes out, it'll be much more mid-range to beat that spec.

1080 will shit all over the scorpio..doesn't matter what time it happens.

The rift has its own store. I'm going to bet ms will have their own headset or they will partner with a Samsung.

That's what I figured but then there is the problem of people needing to buy a new VR device plus a new high end console at the same time if they wanted to play VR. That is a huge price hurdle to overcome and at that point a PC starts to make more sense.

Also note that VR eliminates many of the benefits of consoles. You won't be playing VR games on your comfy couch on a big screen TV and the best sound system in your house. A person playing VR on a computer will have much the same experience as a person playing on a console.

Playstation has the benefit of introducing VR to a large install base of consoles. It doesn't require a super large up front cost.

Scorpio will be like the Xbox 360. Ideally launch before the next-gen PS4. Can play current and next-gen games. MSFT is literally setting the tone for the next generation. MSFT already has the infrastructure. Sony will most likely have to play catch up.

So the ps4 neo is a full year ahead of the new xbox? Seems like a poorly planned move on Microsoft's front.

Especially with the lead Sony have currently.

I suppose their goal is to get enthusiasts to consider waiting for an Xbox Scorpio over getting an PS4 Neo later this year. That makes sense, I guess. They take a hit on Xbox One sales, which will be mitigated by the Xbox One S, and also have a fighting chance at competing during round two of this console generation.

Why do people always forget "optimization" when it comes to consoles? Having to only target 1 (or in this case 2) hardware specs instead of a billion different configurations means so much. I'll always have a high end PC but having a high end console that could be almost as capable is pretty freaking exciting to me.
Because "console optimization", especially when we are talking about GPU specs like we are here, is vastly overrated. Almost every single multiplatform game released on both PC and consoles this generation so far performs very similarly on similarly specced GPUs to consoles once you figure out what settings the latter are running at.

There are some like-for-like CPU advantages, especially compared to high-level APIs, but gaming-grade Intel CPUs are so much faster than what is in the consoles that they usually more than make up for that.

I gues Sony can completely rewrite their presentation now to present Neo to make sure it has better specs. Maybe they will film some new videos to counter everything and add this in tonight as well.

Right guys? RIGHT!?!

or they already had a few versions ready!

Or it can be seen as Sony jumped the gun, especially since the Neo doesn't look like it will be about 4K gaming, but the Scorpio will.

We have to start being straight in these discussions or its not going to go anywhere.
The design of the game is where the fps and resolution are factored in. If they want to hit 4k60 they can and the game will have the resources that allow for that. If they want to hit 4k30 the same. If they want it to run VR they will have to allot for that. And the same to make it work on Xbox One.

Resolution and framerate can simply not be bandied around without discussing the source material.

Not sure what to think of this. As a PC guy there is little reason for me to get this seeing as Xbox Exclusives are not a thing now, but I'm intriqued.

I seriously doubt 4K/60hz will be a possibility. There is simply no way they can get that into a single box at less than $600, it'll be a choice of 1080p/60 or 4K/30 for sure (or the latter with lesser graphical quality of course)

But my biggest worry is that there just isn't an audience for it. The PS3 showed that if your console is too expensive even the pedigree of the PS2 won't help it at launch, and this has the added issue of not even being a new generation.

I'll wait and see more. The price is going to make or break this thing.

the most stupid thing ms can do, which they thankfully wont, is to have scorpio only games. this console model should work like pc, every xbox game should be able to run on all 3 consoles.

Hopefully there will be different settings for games within the Scorpio itself, based on your resolution setting. If you have the console set at 4K you will get the 4K settings, if you're playing at something lower like 1080p you get the frame rate and graphics boost accordingly.

If you're getting the same detail at 1080p that you get at 4K that would suck.

If I build a PC now will the Xbox Scorpio be more powerful???

It depends on which graphics card you choose of course.
Isn't the 1070 6.5 teraflops?
So if you choose the 1070 it'll be a bit better.

BTW, feeling sad for my gaming PC right now with a 970 lol

I thought the same thing, and after the leaks I hoped MS wouldn't mention Scorpio at all. But now I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that MS has conceded this gen to Sony. They are positioning themselves to launch a new, much stronger box in 2017.

And believe this, Xbox One games will be compatible on Scorpio but no way the reverse will be true. Perhaps at the beginning of the life cycle of Scorpio but not the entirety of it.

You see where I'm going with this? History has shown us that the most powerful console does not always win the generation. PS4 is the first generation where the actual strongest console also managed to be the generational leader. You don't need to have a ridiculous machine to compete as long as it is strong enough to handle the demands of the current technology.

B-but muh Teraflaps!!

So the rumor is that the NEO is using a stock AMD GPU that is 5tflops when at standard clock and it's being underclocked in the NEO for heat reasons to run at 4.14tflops. As well, the NEO specs aren't final. Is it out of the realm of possibility that Sony may invest in a better hest management system and set the NEO GPU to standard clock speed to run at 5tflops?

All my Xbox one games and accessories are forward compatible? fucking finally, awesome. Can finally upgrade on day one and not be missing out on all the old gen shit

The 8 CPU cores HAVE to be ZEN, right?

I know Phil did not say anything about the CPU besides 8 cores, but they'd have to use Zen IMHO.

Neo isn't coming out until next year either. They'll probably launch around the same time and have around the same specs/price.

I don't play on consoles much but I dig the ability to have cross buy with PC. Seeing them push that was the best part of the conference for me.

I just noticed that with this announcement, Xbox One sales are probably going to hit all new lows. Which is bad with a new model out there soon.

Seamus Blackley stated that all Xbox One games will work on Scorpio, but not vice versa. So basically cross-gen for a few years, then they'll just move to the new platform. I expect Scorpio exclusives whenever third parties don't want to bother with the Xbox One anymore, and Microsoft will just wait for it to happen naturally.

They aren't IMO. Because Xbone S is almost out and announce more powerful Xbone at the same time.

Looking at this wrong mate. You buy an S if you want a current gen console. You get a Scorpio if you want your investment to carry over to next gen.

Will all Scorpio games also have to work on the Xbox One? That would require a hell of a lot of compromise in graphical fidelity.

Does indeed sounds like a beast, but they announced it way too early.
When Neo marketing start rolling if coming this year, everyone is going to forget this. Unless MS plans on running ads for this when Neo launches I don't see this impacting Neo 1 year out from launch.
Announced waaaay too early. Not to mention it gives So y and Nintendo a year to adjust.

Calling it the most powerful console is such a crazy reversal. All within this gen alone.

Sony loves calling themselves the most powerful. Curious to see if they will let it slide or try to top MS.

To clarify, in terms of power:

Xbox > PS2
PS3 > Xbox 360
PS4 > Xbox 1

Right?
360 had a better GPU, but in theoretical terms PS3 was more 'powerful' due to cell. Didn't show it other than exclusives though, due to complexity.

Of course, they were definitely trying to spoil the Neo party.

I wouldn't be surprised in the coming days and weeks we learn that they don't even have a prototype and the specs are what Microsoft is targeting for and may change before launch. Honestly it is incredible dangerous move on Microsofts part. They basically showed their hand and allowing Sony to decide which direction to go.
