Ok, thread is flying. If this has been answered, I am sorry.

They talked about VR multiple times, but never said the words Oculus or Vive. Do they not have a deal in place yet? Do they have their own VR device coming?

It was just weird they talked about VR, but never said which VR or detailed any marketing deals with the VR companies.

What it seems like is that Microsoft wants everything and is still deciding who to partner up with it, or whether they'll go independent. VR is changing every year. It'll be quite silly to not take advantage of that and come up with a better hardware. However, knowing that Microsoft is now cross-compatibility friendly, it'll have to work on PC and consoles, so it can be either. Expect such announcements next year.

I like that the Scorpio is being released Holiday 2017 because that will spread out my video game hardware purchases. If Neo is released this year, along with PSVR and NX is released in March 2017 it will spread out the hardware releases. I have a 4k HDR Sony tv so I hope the Neo releases this year with UHD blu ray support.

Is this a 6 pin ATX connector?

Likely?

I received these last month but wasn't comfortable posting them here

I'm mostly annoyed by the 4K talk. There is just no way any of these two new systems will run games at true 4K. Unless it's a 2D game maybe.

I'd imagine they'll be able to hit 4K via doing weird shenanigans like what KZ:SF and Quantum Break did (which is to say the output is 4K but it's not a true full 4K image being rendered on every part of the pipeline,) but most developers will instead choose to stick to 1080p and use the extra power for better textures/effects/framerate/etc. Unless MS and/or Sony require 4K, of course, which is unlikely.

Holiday 2017 is lame as fuck. 0 reason to announce other then to beat Sony to the punch despite everyone and their grandma already knows about Neo.

On the plus side, Neo's specs have been underwhelming since day one. Go balls to the wall and give me a $599 beast dammit.

I am glad they got it out there and were smart enough to wait to show it and release a price. Now I can go ahead and enjoy my Xbox One and all of the great games coming until early-mid 2018 (when I might be ready to upgrade) without all of the bullshit speculation flying around. We know it's coming and when.

Stole Sony's thunder when everyone was yelling Microsoft is dead and the Xbox One is weak and that it'll only fall more behind.

Yep. Xbox One sales are flatlining and they needed to announce new hardware for the short term (Xbox One S) and the long term (Scorpio).

I wouldn't be surprised if they end up having to lower the clock speed some due to heat issues.
It'll be interesting to see what Sony does with Neo now, it really feels like them saying Neo won't be at E3 was because it's been delayed a bit to fiddle with the specs a bit. Sony will probably want to make sure they hit 399, but the scoprio sounds like it will be over that.

lol Neo is going to release earlier than Scorpio, nothing they can do to beat it in specs

The one good thing is that devs will be making games for powerful hardware all the way around now. Even if 6TFlops is mid range by the time it's out, it's still better than building games for the specs of the X1/PS4. High End GPU's should be able to make games look orgasmic.

.

Platform warriors assemble!

What does this even mean? I'm commenting on what they look to be doing. They have said all three will work together and the move to UWP so games work easily on PC or Xbox are all pointing this way.

By enabling cross buy and making exclusives available on both they are saying you have options as long as you buy our games. From a business POV it makes sense, you don't make money on HW only on SW, open the store to all to sell the SW and provide options for the HW.

I legitimately do not care about Project Scorpio whatsoever. Microsoft has enabled me to play their games on PC so I'm going to abandon their consoles completely.

Well a more powerful Scorpio means that Xbox games developed to target it will scale up better on your even more powerful PC.

If the PS4k is launching this year (and everything is indicating that it will), then that's going to shoot the 360 comparison.

Honestly, the big thing with the transition to incremental platforms is that (assuming backwards compatibility holds up) people are going to be invested in ecosystems. Previously, everyone effectively lost access to old games every generation on their new boxes. Going forward, hopefully that will be a thing of the past. The big problem Microsoft faces is convincing people to abandon their PS4 game collections to cross the isle, and I suspect that's going to be a harder ask than anyone is expecting. Likewise, Sony will probably have trouble convincing people to abandon their Xbox collections. I don't see this as a knockout punch, more like cementing the current status quo.

Good point.

Not locked. $499 with 4-5TF and Zen CPU is the low end choice at the moment according to Osiris.

They would have had to have had two parallel dev streams going on to make that possible, so I doubt it. You cannot pivot 4-6 months before launch.

This generation is a screwed one that's for sure.

- mid cycle refresh
- powerwise Playstation > XBOX switch to XBOX > Playstation

the potentially staggered releases of Neo and Scorpio along with significantly more digital purchases this generation means you won't get lots of people switching sides. PS4 owners with hundreds of dollars of purchases tied to their accounts may just 'suffer' with only 4.5TF for a couple of years after Scorpio comes out, and then leapfrog again with the next console.

This is a great sounding console from MS, but its really bad timing - the shitstorm around their launch of XB1 and relatively poor performance Vs PS4 came right at the point where the reset button of a new generation was removed and both companies transitioned to a continuous ecosystem approach.

I'm 200% ok with paying through the nose regularly for more power. But I want to cast off all ties to the past. I don't want to pay a ton and have old architecture and last gen laggards holding in. I hate this strategy from all parties, Sony AND Microsoft. I hate this!

God, I hope the One/PS4 versions won't run too bad, like Skyrim bad. I don't have the money to keep upgrading consoles. If the base PS4/One versions perform bad I don't know what I'd do.

Lol xbox scorpio..

Its already out. Its called a PC

Most xbox games are or are coming to PC

If you want an xbox just get the slim itd pretty sexy at least.

Nope, now if you can install Xbox OS on PC. Then sure.

There's not much Sony has to do to match Neo's specs looking at baseline leaks, both consoles are using polaris, so it's just a matter of increasing clockrates at this point. I do think Sony will be able to outdo them if they launch at the same time in 2017.

It will be interesting If Sony is able to offer a 6TF console ahead of Microsoft in 2017 though, I find this is a long wait for a 6TF console. GPU specs and the AMD timeline would be way ahead by then for both CPU's and GPU's

Impossible for Sony to do more than 480. They're limited by their choice of GDDR5 memory, which maxes out at 256 gb/s.

If they're releasing soon i dont think it'll be easy to change the type of memory being used since that means using different memory controllers.

6 tf is max for early 2017 neo.

Neo will release next year with comparable hardware. There's no way Sony is releasing it this year to be chewed down by Microsoft next year.

Sony needs to match this or surpass this. I will buy only 1 powerful console for my 3rd party games. If this means its Scorpio than Sony lost one dedicated fan.

I will use my PS4 for exclusives and the rest will be MS

Damn. This will destroy the PS4 Neo. If this is indeed 6TF then it more powerful than my gaming PC.

I might be tempted to ditch my PS4 and move to Xbox as my main console. Sony needs to beef up the Neo specs if they want to compete with this.

And will you then ditch the Scorpio 2-3 years from now when the PS5 launches and destroys the Scorpio?...

The staggered console launches that it looks like we're about to start seeing really has me fucked up

B-but the future ! PHONES !

So basically the Neo is an iterative console - minor step up from PS4 while the Scorpio is basically an XB1 2 but they're just not calling it that? With the huge step up and it coming out 4 years after the XB1, sounds like a full refresh.

So as John Carmack said: "for the same given paper spec, a console will deliver twice the perf of a PC" - does this mean the Scoprio is the equivalent of 12 Terraflops at the end of 2017?

And interestingly, Microsoft didn't say anything about RAM on Scorpio (16 GB according to the leaks). Are they waiting to see if Sony's NEO really has only 8 GB, to counter it?

Seems to me as if they are pretty serious this time...

This was more meaningful in past generations when console hardware was highly customized, developers worked to a single target spec, and PCs did not have the low-overhead APIs and drivers that now exist. With consoles switching to less customized boxes, combined with multiple target specs of cross generation, those kinds of gains are not really a thing anymore. Even for first party developers.

They don't need to do anything. Xbox Scorpio will be like the original Xbox, sure it's most powerful, but the greatest and majority of games were being developed for the lesser PS2, which in this case would be the PS4 Neo. Sony's got the majority of the market for a long time as long as they don't do any PS3-level screw ups.

This tbh; there's no reason for them to compute on pure power especially when the product cycles are becoming shorter and shorter. Not to mention the inevitable price disparity unless Microsoft really undercuts the price point of the Scorpio.

No, its easy. Most of the people that play games do not want a PC, they play on console.

we can't act like people have no idea or no desire to go to pc gaming, when some of the most played games are PC only titles like League of Legends, DOTA 2, CSGO. It's really silly to toss out the idea that people won't say "I can play Xbox games on PC too?" and be interested to go that route.

Console sounds great but all of this news means I'm probably going to abandon consoles in favor of PC-only and wait for the real must have exclusives and see where we're at.

I honestly don't think this will do anything sales wise for Microsoft. But I commend them for upping the ante when it comes to power..

They would have probably shown it at E3 if it was coming this year, I'm willing to bet they delayed it to early next year to update the specs, even if it's just upping the GPU clock speed and adjusting the case and cooling due to the higher heat output.
