Xbox Project Scorpio Announced - 6TFlops, 320GB/s - Fall 2017

They would have had to have had two parallel dev streams going on to make that possible, so I doubt it. You cannot pivot 4-6 months before launch.

Their current target spec has a supremely underclocked Polaris GPU at 911mhz. A higher spec'd model would likely just be an adjustment in case size and cooling to accommodate a clock boost.

Who knows, they might delay to Spring 2017 to do this.

There's not much Sony has to do to match Neo's specs looking at baseline leaks, both consoles are using polaris, so it's just a matter of increasing clockrates at this point. I do think Sony will be able to outdo them if they launch at the same time in 2017.

It will be interesting If Sony is able to offer a 6TF console ahead of Microsoft in 2017 though, I find this is a long wait for a 6TF console from MS. GPU specs and the AMD timeline would be way ahead by then for both CPU's and GPU's

Neo is 4.2 TF. It is nowhere near 6 TF and they can't simply 'turn up the clockrates' without all sorts of other engineering issues flaring up. If you think Sony will significantly alter their plans/specs you will be disappointed. Sony doesn't likely view Neo as a pivot point for PS4, they view it as a premium PS4 model. Scorpio, on the other hand, represents a very sharp pivot for MS. It will likely have exclusive content just like any new console whereas Neo won't.

I'm 200% ok with paying through the nose regularly for more power. But I want to cast off all ties to the past. I don't want to pay a ton and have old architecture and last gen laggards holding in. I hate this strategy from all parties, Sony AND Microsoft. I hate this!

That's the issue, developers are still going to build for the Xbox One and PS4 because of the cheer numbers

This really sucks

I have to ask how bullshit is their marketing about the "true 4k gaming"? Thought the 1080 didn't hit it that much and that's way stronger.

Right but without all the hassle of needing to worry about drivers and short term fixes/upgrades etc. I don't want a pc to meddle with. I just want a box that is always ready to play games.

Consoles provide this.

Hassle? Huh? It tells me there are updates and I update it

I'm not interested in this or the Neo, but I'm confused about why they'd announce a new iteration of the Xbox One, then the Scorpio.

Yeah, this is where I don't understand MS. Why would I now invest in hardware that'll become obsolete in a little over a year?

MS has a shit ton of money - they just threw $26 billion for LinkedIn

They could have funded 130 first parties with $200 million a piece with that much money

There are no more generations, let's stop thinking this way.

See my post above. I was talking about the power, as in "it has the power of a next-gen console" instead of "it's a small update, as most of us would have expected until just a few weeks/months ago". It's clear that the traditional console cycle no longer exists. ;)

General brand perception? The reason plenty of people also bought a ps4 over an Xbox one was power , myself included. That's turned around now and there's nothing Sony can do about it now.

Based on what exactly? A spec sheet for a console that is not releasing for another 1.5 years? lmao

If anything now buys will be even more hesitant to buy the xbone, xbone S because they might be better served waiting for the new console iteration.

And we really don't even know what the specs would be for the next PS either. So it's beyond silly to say there's nothing for Sony to do to counter this.

Such a silly move to announce 18 months early.

So dumb. This thing is effectively DOA. Neo may be weaker, but it won't be such a long wait and it's a boost to the market leading console.

The last console which was technically interesting was PS3.

(And see what good that did in the market)

Yeah, but when the software platform rolls in too, then that's all 'identity' well and truly gone.

I mean if Xbox was a strong standalone platform with a strong mix of exclusive content, this would at least be exciting as the most powerful Xbox yet. Like that would mean something. It wouldn't be an apples to apples comparison with other options. The same way if Nintendo announced such a system now - it doesn't so much matter that the parts are 'PC', it's still a distinct box to get distinctly excited about.

Now it's just, more or less, a midrange PC for next holiday. Albeit a really good value one, I'm sure.

Like, it's not a big deal. I'm not complaining as such. There's obviously big upside to this strategy if you already have good PC hardware, this is all good for consumers, more choices on how to consume Xbox content. But it just feels like somethings changed here from a 'console landscape' point of view, that's all :)

Did I miss something? When did they say it was going to be forwards compatible?
Literally during the conference. Games will work on the OG Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox Scorpio. Any games that are B/C on OG Xbox One, therefore, will be forward compatible through all three consoles. New/existing games will scale across.

This.

Project Scorpio is not just a mid-cycle, upgraded Xbox One. It's a next-generation console.
what's the difference if the games still need to run on the 1.21 tf xbox one?

There is no new generation happening here

they are basically selling a platform, the Xbox platform, doesn't matter if you play on a console or on the W10

Yep, people doesn't seem to get this.

Except the most logical interpretation of their super vague announcement is that all games must still support the XBone, good luck transitioning.

Also the power differential is kinda small compared to past full generation leaps.

Edit - This isn't to say 6 Tflops isn't powerful, but there's no need to go to generational thinking when the entire point of this system is that there are no distinct generations anymore.

New gen without a single exclusive? All the power without compelling exclusive library?
This must be the most boring new gen of console history.

The exclusives will be in the eye candy... all gens had cross generational carry over. Almost every new game on One and PS4 game had a comparable pS3 and 360 game when it released for about a year or two.

This is no different except you get to keep playing your old games on the new machine from day one and the old machine gets to play all the new games if you don't care about or can't afford the new spec machine yet

There's one releasing this month which will do 5.5 for $200.
Going by past experience, next month there will probably be factory OC'd models of that for $250 or so which provide 6 TF.

The Scorpio is also 17 or so months out. We'll get another full generation of video cards by then, and will be close to getting a second.

Obsolete? So it will magically stop working and playing games once Scorpio comes out?
Obsolete doesn't necessarily mean non-functional.

It'll be considered legacy, new product marketing will focus on Scorpio versions, sacrifices will be made to base versions, and all the GAF talk will be about Scorpio versions until the next revision comes along a few years later and we repeat the same cycle. That's *if* it works like the NEO.

If they cut compatibility somewhere, it'll be far more pronounced.

There is no Microsoft console anymore - it's windows 10 store machine. Xbox is now merely a branding

If we're on modular consoles now then I probably won't even buy the net PlayStation. Up until this point I'd buy consoles day 1 on the promise of the future in addition to my PC. No reason to do that now. Not complaining at all, just stating.

Based on the die they showed, that didn't look like Polaris 10. It seemed about the same size (slightly smaller) than Polaris 10.

It also seemed to be using traditional GDDR5 memory and not HBM. The 320GB/s also lines up very well with GDDR5x like I have been speculating, only at higher clock speeds.

They specifically said "SOC" so unless I'm missing something that seems really small

Are we sure this isn't a doctored Xbox One picture? With 16 months to launch, there may not even be a hardware prototype that exists like this yet.

Generations are dead, the one thing consoles still had to make them interesting imo.

PS4K, Xcorpio and their succesors will be nothing more than streamlined PCs with a nice UI, I think they will mantain the Tick-Tock model to introduce new features, but having to upgrade middle-cicle to keep up with the PC hardware evolutions.

Well, it's almost a fivefold increase in performance compared to XB1 in terms of GPU Flops. That's roughly the same as the step from 360 to XB1.

Yeah it is very misleading. The scorpio will be as much of a true 4k console as xbox one is a true 1080p console. Still it's a huge step up over the xbox one. Good decision.
