we can't act like people have no idea or no desire to go to pc gaming, when some of the most played games are PC only titles like League of Legends, DOTA 2, CSGO. It's really silly to toss out the idea that people won't say "I can play Xbox games on PC too?" and be interested to go that route.

Yeah, people will buy this games on pc but we can also act like all the people will buy the games on pc. Now there is the concern trolling that everybody will drop the console becasue the game is coming to pc when only a few will do it.

Yeah, this is where I don't understand MS. Why would I now invest in hardware that'll become obsolete in a little over a year?

because they are investing in the platform, as long as their software is selling on the W10, Xbox etc.. it won't matter to them as the money is in the software

MS is effectively starting a new gen.

Sony is either fucked, or they have the advantage of being the biggest and most publishers keep pouring out PS4k games with not much benefit for Scorpio.

Or they went back to the drawing board with PS4K and will do adjustments. Hence their apparent no show for today.

if some gaming sites knew about the Scorpio Specs you can bet all your money that sony knew a year from now whats happening!

The Netflix People were talking about 4K consoles like a year ago !right?

Yeah. Not needing to download drivers, not needing to plug in a keyboard/mouse, retail games and plethora of used retail games are all indicative of PC gaming.

Getting sick of people swooping into threads and telling people why they should like or want the product being discussed.

Drivers are no different than downloading patches for your game..this isn't the old days.

You don't need to plug in a keyboard and mouse either if you don't want to. You can program your gamepad to be a basic combination of both. and games are cheaper in general on PC.

Make xbone games sub hd to notice a notable graphical difference in scorpio. If the base xbone game is 1080P the scotpio 4k version will not look as impressive graphically.

what GPUs are twice as fast as this? I think only 1070 (barely) and 1080 beat this? and they're weird Nvidia TFs which don't compare anyway

Well this is 6 TFLOPS for the whole system. And we're talking about AMD TFLOPs here combined with the performance of the CPU.

The old 390X is almost 6 TFLOPs on its own. And that is significantly bested by the 1070/1080. In 2017 we'll have AMD RX 490, Vega GPUs too as well as the 1080 Ti and Titan Pascal as you know, much faster still.

While this box will not be for me considering that I'm on PC, I feel that it's great that Microsoft are putting emphasis on compatibility. They are building on their current foundation in a way that should have been done years ago. You games don't get left behind.

So I've done my own research on Scorpio and found the following detailed breakdown:

Strengths: Resourceful, brave, passionate, stubborn, a true friend
Weaknesses: Distrusting, jealous, secretive, violent
Scorpio likes: Truth, facts, being right, longtime friends, teasing, a grand passion
Scorpio dislikes: Dishonesty, revealing secrets, passive people

Note: See? Truthfacts.

Also leads me to believe Scorpio will release somewhere between October 23rd and November 21st.

.

Or simply a sting in the tail for PlayStation and the Neo?

I'm on board if the from PS4 to Neo is like what Scorpio seems to become. Its 4 years, i'm okay with a huge leap. Just not with the small gap the PS4K leaks suggest.

No exklusive games , no new generation.

Yeah, this is where I don't understand MS. Why would I now invest in hardware that'll become obsolete in a little over a year?

Yeah they could unveil Scorpio next year. They could still one up Sony as I think in this case they would've carried on with showing Neo which is severely weaker.

I'm mostly annoyed by the 4K talk. There is just no way any of these two new systems will run games at true 4K. Unless it's a 2D game maybe.

Yeah within seconds they put pressure on themselves to now be under scrutiny about 4K. They seem confident though. Multiple times Phil said true 4K gaming.

You know that Sony has lied about what would be talked about in E3 before right? Just saying that I wouldn't be surprised if that ended up being the case..

That is why I believe MS did what they did. They knew about Neo and even though Sony said "no neo talk", MS was not going to take chances. I think the messaging MS used was fantastic and if Sony does talk NEO, it will be AFTER MS talked about Scorpio. If MS did not talk Scorpio and Sony did talk NEO that would not look good and you can imagine the GAF reactions would be immense if it happened that way.

By the time of its release it will be mid range.

Going by comparisons against AMD GPUs with that kind of HW potential, a GTX 1080 (just released) should be roughly twice as fast. By the time it's out there will probably be a single-GPU high-end solution which is around 3 times as fast.

Now that's a bit pessimistic. According to Computerbase, at 4K resolution, the 1080 is only about 50% faster than a R9 390X (~6 TFLOPS) on average.

But yeah, it will be mid-range. Even now it's not much above mid-range with the RX 480 being released at $200.

To everyone shitting on this remember how disappointed everyone was at having low end consoles, remember how we thought 2.5 teraflops would of been beast mode and we would of gotten the real unreal engine 4 with global illumination. Well guess what, we are getting what we thought was impossible.

Consoles manufactures just re entered the arms race except we have shorter releases between console iterations

I love this and would of never imagined we would be headed this way 3 years ago

No. There are no more generations folks. Get that through. The model has changed for consoles, and this is it.
That's not what I meant. I meant, in terms of raw power, it's as if we go from Xbox 360 -> Xbox One, or PlayStation 3 -> PlayStation 4.

While, up to a few weeks ago, most people were expecting a new cycle of smaller but more regular updates (like you see with smartphones).

Of course the traditional console cycles are over. The mere fact that this thing is announced less than 3 years after the Xbox One was released proves that.

Y'all do realize that a majority of people don't have a gaming PC and a console right? So saying "them putting everything on PC means people won't buy Xbox!" Is misguided. Them putting everything on PC means they now get money from those PC gamers who would have not bought an Xbox but did want a few Xbox games. Money they had not gotten in the past.

Scorpio is a good thing, what I don't understand is people losing their shit at these TFLOPS numbers, I wonder if they really know what they mean, probably some do, I certainly don't but I'll asume that's a lot of FLOPS.

I'm 200% ok with paying through the nose regularly for more power. But I want to cast off all ties to the past. I don't want to pay a ton and have old architecture and last gen laggards holding in. I hate this strategy from all parties, Sony AND Microsoft. I hate this!

I have been kind of there as well, but I am thinking that a late 2017 launch is about right for me, as I will not be ready to move on until 2018 anyway. That is doable, and then I will not be ready for new system for around another four years beyond that. Four years is my absolute minimum.

I was slightly interested in Scorpio. But with everything coming to Windows 10 I'm just going to get a 4k gaming PC of some sort. My mind has been thoroughly blown by the PC screenshot thread and I really don't want anything less right now. I sure as shit don't want to wait until next Christmas.

beast of a console revelead way too early imo, the console is over a year away. Would have been nice to see some gameplay or something

Are there any GPUs that are not Titan-pricing tier that could pull off 6 Tflops? I'm genuinely curious.

AMD is releasing one for $200-230 in 2 weeks. You'll probably be able to get something with similar performance for $150 or less by the time this thing launches.

........ to be really honest is that Xbox One is a glorified PC even the PS4 to a certain extent.

Right but without all the hassle of needing to worry about drivers and short term fixes/upgrades etc. I don't want a pc to meddle with. I just want a box that is always ready to play games.

Consoles provide this.

Wtf. Xbox sales will plumit until then.

Xbox One sales have been terrible, MS doesnt care anymore, Scorpio is what will drive the Xbox Business moving forward, new strategy was needed.

They probably wouldn't be doing this if they were in the situation 360 was back in the day but here we go in 2016, Xbox Brand is losing steam, sales are not good and MS needs to hit hard next year with the most powerful console in the business.

MS is effectively starting a new gen.

Sony is either fucked, or they have the advantage of being the biggest and most publishers keep pouring out PS4k games with not much benefit for Scorpio.

Sony has the advantage of having an official confirmation of what MS is working on. They can change the specs since it's not last year, however it will cost them a lot if they're making serious hardware changes.

Remember, Microsoft just coined this "The most powerful console ever", so clearly they're leading as of now and Sony may not match the specs, but they have an advantage of knowing whats happening a year and a half ago.

General brand perception? The reason plenty of people also bought a ps4 over an Xbox one was power , myself included. That's turned around now and there's nothing Sony can do about it now.

people buy the Ps4 for the brand and the games. Most people dont even know the Ps4 is stronger than xbox one.

If the PS4k is launching this year (and everything is indicating that it will), then that's going to shoot the 360 comparison.

Honestly, the big thing with the transition to incremental platforms is that (assuming backwards compatibility holds up) people are going to be invested in ecosystems. Previously, everyone effectively lost access to old games every generation on their new boxes. Going forward, hopefully that will be a thing of the past. The big problem Microsoft faces is convincing people to abandon their PS4 game collections to cross the isle, and I suspect that's going to be a harder ask than anyone is expecting. Likewise, Sony will probably have trouble convincing people to abandon their Xbox collections. I don't see this as a knockout punch, more like cementing the current status quo.

This is why it was always weird to me to see people confused about why Sony as the market leader would want to move to this model. It will likely benefit them most going forward because of ecosystem inertia.

I didn't watch the whole scorpio segment, and didn't read everything in the thread. Is the speculation that the memory bandwidth is the new ESRAM pool only, or is this machine unlikely to have any such memory configuration, and the memory bandwidth listed is for the whole of the available memory?
That would likely be for the entire pool of memory. A 6TF GPU is going to require a ton of memory bandwidth.

The best news for me was that existing accessories are compatible. Haven't had my $150 controller and $300 wheel for very long.

Up until the Scorpio announcement, the Microsoft Conference was super boring. I am surprised that people are excited for a console that Microsoft hasn't even showed a game for. I guess the people playing games these days don't care about games. It's all about them teraflops, Anti Aliasing, resolution, and framerate. God I am bored already.
I thought the conference and was good and very focused on new games... until the Minecraft marathon. And then it fell off of a cliff. This feels like E3 2005. Everybody excited at the possibilities. Next year is E3 2006 when the other shoe drops on hardware pricing. Not "Old Snake with gun to the head $599 USD" bad, but not enticing either.

I love the direction they're going in. I wish they'd just go all the way with it and do something like an xbox-branded Alienware Alpha. Just open that sucker up. I know why they won't do it because they want you in their eco-system, but that's where things are headed. The true convergence of PC and the living room. I think steam machines had the right idea, but people still want/need Windows.

Are there any GPUs that are not Titan-pricing tier that could pull off 6 Tflops? I'm genuinely curious.
There's one releasing this month which will do 5.5 for $200.
Going by past experience, next month there will probably be factory OC'd models of that for $250 or so which provide 6 TF.

Right but without all the hassle of needing to worry about drivers and short term fixes/upgrades etc. I don't want a pc to meddle with. I just want a box that is always ready to play games.

Consoles provide this.

More importantly, upgraded consoles like the Neo and Scorpio will also provide this.

New gen without a single exclusive? All the power without compelling exclusive library?
This must be the most boring new gen of console history.

Generations as they have historically been thought of are dead. Sony and MS are going to see to it. Platforms with BC with old games and iterations going forward. We are mobile know and its about time.
