I honestly think they scrapped their original NX plans when finding out about PS4K and Scorpio and are now boosting the specs to be competitive. I mean why else would they book up so much E3 floor space? Just to have Zelda demos? Doesn't make any sense.

Sony hinting that PS4K won't be shown at E3 is the same thing. I fully expect it to be delayed and beat Scorpio's specs at launch.

Scorpio sounds more interesting now than before anyhow. Late 2016 or early 2017 would've been too early for me. XB1 launched just 1.5 years ago in Sweden. But so many games coming to PC, and Xbox Live Gold still needs a subscription on Xbox. Makes it kind of hard to justify a purchase when you're a PC gamer.

It's too late to boost specs for a console coming in March. At most, they could plan to announce "deluxe" sku with better specs for next year.

Generations are dead, the one thing consoles still had to make them interesting imo.

PS4K, Xcorpio and their succesors will be nothing more than streamlined PCs with a nice UI, I think they will mantain the Tick-Tock model to introduce new features, but having to upgrade middle-cicle to keep up with the PC hardware evolutions.

DOWNER

I'm not interested in this or the Neo, but I'm confused about why they'd announce a new iteration of the Xbox One, then the Scorpio.

Because Xbox One is still alive and has plenty of games coming out for it. They just announced the system and the road map, but the full reveal and price is still to come.

Stop sucking the PR dick, dude.

This post is a great example of how gamers are not only incapable of thinking about paradigm shifts in the industry, but they're also actively hostile to people who are capable of thinking about them.

Also, it's a hostile shit post. Take a break.

I don't doubt for a second Microsoft is starting a new generation, I would be worried at the quality of games Xbox One gets in the next two years.

They baiting Sony to do the same with Neo so they match Scorpio. Kill off the generation they sucked at quicker and battle in a new one.

That's the issue, developers are still going to build for the Xbox One and PS4 because of the cheer numbers

This really sucks
Yup. What is the point of the expenditure on something that plays the same games in better form? Might as well upgrade your PC and get access to crazy ass steam sales, faster access to mods through developer portals like Bethesda.net, etc.

My guess is they think this can work because desktop PC sales are declining, but the enthusiast crowd that would buy another $400+ console three or four years later (ugh) are the same people that would buy a new graphics card. The larger audience that third parties what to reach to sell 10M+ copies of games are still going to be on PS4 and Xbone.

To slow down excitement for neo. The nightmare scenario for Microsoft is if neo takes off and causes there to be no material difference between games with a much more expensive box

I'm not sure why some people think it's going to be relatively cheap compared to its specs just because it's coming out next year. It's not like the XB1 was top of the line and it was priced at $500. Even if you take the Kinect out, it's over $400. This beast is going to cost a lot more than that.

Yep, people doesn't seem to get this.

People seem to fall over the words "generation" and "cycle".

All I meant was that this is a big upgrade, like you would expect from a next-gen console (like you expected with X360 -> XB1 and PS3 -> PS4).
Up to a few weeks or months ago, people were expecting smaller (but more regular) updates.

BC was the confirmation I wanted most, now I can happily continue buying X1 games. Those specs sound delicious as well! It's going to be an agonising wait, but this announcement has pretty much locked me into Microsoft's ecosystem exclusively for the next few years.

I still don't believe this is what the mainstream audience wants. People who bought an XB1 or PS4 aren't going to flock to this when they can play the same games on older consoles without forking over $400-$500.

People like those in house at the conference at us on NeoGaf, sure - this is the stuff we want, but we only represent a very small fraction of the overall market.

I think Sony and MS are misjudging this. I'm especially worried about games being held back because of compatibility demands, negating the need, or even usefulness of having an upgraded model.

I'm sure they have a plan, and I hope it works. But with the current gen less than 3 years old, it seems too soon.

Neo is 4.2 TF. It is nowhere near 6 TF and they can't simply 'turn up the clockrates' without all sorts of other engineering issues flaring up. If you think Sony will significantly alter their plans/specs you will be disappointed. Sony doesn't likely view Neo as a pivot point for PS4, they view it as a premium PS4 model. Scorpio, on the other hand, represents a very sharp pivot for MS. It will likely have exclusive content just like any new console whereas Neo won't.

.

The uwpbox.

Huge boost. But it's still the same generation, if you look at it from how games will work across all consoles. Or technically could be a new gen if you want to look at it that way. Either way...it's a win for any Xbox player.
Will it turn into a new generation when they release a Scorpio successor and games are only compatible with Scorpio, but not XB1?

Based on what exactly? A spec sheet for a console that is not releasing for another 1.5 years? lmao

If anything now buys will be even more hesitant to buy the xbone, xbone S because they might be better served waiting for the new console iteration.

And we really don't even know what the specs would be for the next PS either. So it's beyond silly to say there's nothing for Sony to do to counter this.
Seems like you're being willfully ignorant. The leaks gave us our Scorpio specs, the leaks that gave us the NEOs existence gave us it's specs with 4.4tf along with a launch either this fall or or next spring. Do you really think that's enough time to bump their console two TFS? Obviously not and obviously everyone will wait for a Scorpio, but in the long run those who want power will grab a Scorpio effectively turning the situation around. Do you think those looking for a powerful console will grab a neo when they know the Scorpio is coming?

I echo the "generations are dead" statement.

I welcome it if it means BC forever, now I wonder how often these new iterations will release.

This isn't what I have been told by a vetted insider on here. He says Sony has a version of Neo under consideration that is comparable to Scorpio, but the pricing is an issue.

New gen without a single exclusive? All the power without compelling exclusive library?
This must be the most boring new gen of console history.

for people that don't own a gaming pc, this is a great value, and has many great exclusives, the fact that you can probably play every third party game at 60fps on ultra >>>>>>>> exclusives.

That is why I believe MS did what they did. They knew about Neo and even though Sony said "no neo talk", MS was not going to take chances. I think the messaging MS used was fantastic and if Sony does talk NEO, it will be AFTER MS talked about Scorpio. If MS did not talk Scorpio and Sony did talk NEO that would not look good and you can imagine the GAF reactions would be immense if it happened that way.

True MS isn't on the back foot from that POV. I could imagine a scenario where they didn't mention Scorpio and Sony shows the Neo and MS is lttp again having to play catch up with the PR.

Now Sony kind of has to answer the power question or MS gets to frame the next gen in their terms.

The tech that AMD has that reaches that level of power can be bought for $200 MSRP. That's right now. A year from now it'll be peanuts.

So is this still part of the Xbone series or an actual successor?

It is now known as the Xbox Family of devices. They said it will play all Xbox One games and use all accessories. It technically is a successor, but able to play and use all your stuff from Xbox One to include Xbox 360 BC games as well. It coming out 4 years after the Xbox One, it will most likely be marketed as a next next gen console that has a huge library of games day one.

People are worried about yearly, and I think yearly would be a mistake. Every three years? That sounds more reasonable to me.

I'm really going to miss the 4-6yr cycle.

Do you really think they'll start a new gen with no next gen games? Like come on

They have said that games for scorpio will work on the existing consoles. Some games will likely just be pushing the envelope more than others. Developers are already creating games which have video card setting on PC, this will be the same thing. Sony has also mandated this

Think of it this way, as a developer you can create a game that pushes the scorpio/ps4k while leveraging the existing base of sold consoles. May help reduce some of the exposure developers have when jumping to a new platform.

Platforms are dead. Its ecosystem now.

Yet they will keep outselling gaming Pcs, doesn't matter, people want simplicity, 99% of everyone at least.
