Impossible for Sony to do more than 480. They're limited by their choice of GDDR5 memory, which maxes out at 256 gb/s.

If they're releasing soon i dont think it'll be easy to change the type of memory being used since that means using different memory controllers.

6 tf is max for early 2017 neo.
Nothing is impossible once you've not launched yet. I think Sony wanted MS to reveal their deck before they finalized Neo's specs and now that they have, sony can go full throttle on their own vision. Cite's OsirisBlacks (more expensive version of NEO was always on the cards). There's no reason for Sony to announce their specs ahead of MS, they have the most powerful console now, so MS felt pressured to announce this a whole year and plus before launch. This is even more confirmation to me that were not going to see Neo this year, I dont think the two consoles would be launched so far apart.

Sony needs to match this or surpass this. I will buy only 1 powerful console for my 3rd party games. If this means its Scorpio than Sony lost one dedicated fan.

I will use my PS4 for exclusives and the rest will be MS

Same here, but I dont see the difference between 4.5 , 5 or 6 TF is important, as they will all do 1080p impeccably yet will struggle to do > 30 FPS at 4K.

However, what is important is the bandwidth and CPU - Scorpio will probably get zen with 336 GBs, which is awsome.

If Sony go Jaguar with a 30 % clock increase then Neo will be weak and will struggle with 60 FPS even at 1080p.

Its over to Sony, if they choose Jaguar for Neo then they loose console enthusiasts.

Will it turn into a new generation when they release a Scorpio successor and games are only compatible with Scorpio, but not XB1?

Min spec SKU's have always had an impact on game development so I imagine this event would have significant meaning.

I don't think traditional generations talk even matters anymore if we start getting iterative consoles with BC/FC.

Are we sure this isn't a doctored Xbox One picture? With 16 months to launch, there may not even be a hardware prototype that exists like this yet.

Everything about the announcement was angled to try and counter Sony's Neo. I think you may be correct in that they may not even have a prototype and that image has been created for PR.

bingo, no more console generation, it's all iterations/improvements from here, yes like smartphones

It's not a new "generation" but it's more than an iteration on the XB1. It's a full refresh. They could call it an XB2 and no one would have a problem with it. The Neo is more an iterative console that isn't different enough to warrant a "PS5" moniker.

So basically, Sony is doing the iterative approach correctly, and will be putting out cheaper boxes. MS is doing a full refresh and pretending it's merely an update but it's going to cost you heavily.

If we're done with 5 year generations, I think I'm done with consoles.

Don't follow Microsoft off this cliff, Sony.

They've already confirmed the PS4K. And they cited the smartphone buying cycle while confirming. This is how things are now, unfortunately.

There are no more generations, let's stop thinking this way.

they should just let us replace memory and gpus if thats where its headed... actually... they should just stop making dedicated machines and lets us completely customize it in terms of power and memory...

PCs already do that... actually consoles should just be PCs.

To slow down excitement for neo. The nightmare scenario for Microsoft is if neo takes off and causes there to be no material difference between games with a much more expensive box
How much of a material difference can there be when games still need to run on Xbox One? Yes, higher resolution, better frame rate, better textures... but the game still needs to work on that hardware from 2013, let alone Neo. This whole thing seems to be banking a hell of a lot on 4K and VR spreading like wildfire. I don't see the imputes for mass market upgrading without it.

I'm just happy almost everything is coming to PC. There's literally no point in investing in something like this for PC players.

Sony's up against a wall. Release PlayStation Neo this year and get left behind next year, or delay it and let Xbox One S be THE 4K Blu Ray player this Xmas.

Oh boy the render shown 384 bit bus.

More than 8GB of ram confirmed if render is representative of final product.

Would be expensive.

To people who are confused about why have a new Xbox S and Scorpio you just have to look at the phone market.

Scorpio is the new Flagship Xbox, like a flagship Iphone, it is the top dog.

Then they have a older reduced price for cheaper tech. in revisions. Xbox S is for people at a lower price point. Think teenagers who are getting their first console at xmas, people in non-western markets who get PS3 and Xbox 360s years after everyone else.
People buy Iphone SE's because they want a Iphone experience but they don't want best of the best.

They do it this way so Xbox remains a shared Ecosystem where the games work on all xboxs and where everyone can play together regardless of what xbox you have. It examplifies that Xbox is a delivery system, not just a static analog box that cannot grow.

MS really does seem to have written everything off for this. It's a kind confusing message.
I think the message was clear. Unifying everything behind one-store banner, consoles, like PC are just one device to access the same content. And come 2017, their next box will likely be binary compatible with UWP, eliminating the overhead of ports between devices alltogether.
Basically - they're selling you a platform, boxes are just a side note to get there.

for people that don't own a gaming pc, this is a great value, and has many great exclusives, the fact that you can probably play every third party game at 60fps on ultra >>>>>>>> exclusives.

I'm not saying game also release on PC, I mean no Scorpio/Neo or any future iterative hardware exclusive?
Where is the excitement? You can have 100tf hardware and it still a disappointment if all game must run on 1.3tf hardware.

People are worried about yearly, and I think yearly would be a mistake. Every three years? That sounds more reasonable to me.

I'm really going to miss the 4-6yr cycle.

Yearly? They must be out of their minds if they will go down that route, I'll go strictly PC then.

I think three years should be the minimum, but every four years would be perfect.

Bit stupid if it doesn't have exclusives, how are you going to build a console like that and then not utilise it.

Again, there aren't many console exclusives anymore. Everything is really multi/PC. Should developers stop putting in the option for extremely high graphical settings on PC games because not everyone can use them?

Games will be console/PC and likely will choose the graphical settings based on the platform in use. Scorpio will choose higher settings than XB1.

so we don't have the hard specifics on the specs yet though right? as in, we can reasonably assume it's a Vega (?) GPU and not Polaris, but we don't know what the CPU portion is going to be. also just commented on memory bandwidth but not what type of memory. ie: HBM GDDR5, GDDR5x (?), or some other types of memory i'm not savvy on.

what i can say though, is that if Sony really is releasing Neo in Q4 or Q1, then the timeline of AMD's tech just won't allow them to match the Scorpio specs. they'd need to delay it till later next year to match or exceed it, which i don't think Sony is willing to do, to be honest.

so Sony's problem right now is that if Neo and Scorpio are targeting console gamers that are also enthusiasts (ie: they want the best power and don't mind paying more money than the standard sku's) then what reason would any of those types of gamers have to get a Neo instead of a Scorpio?

the way i see it is: it doesn't matter if AMD chips and cards are cheaper than intel and Nvidia. they just aren't up to par with performance, so enthusiasts naturally gravitate toward intel/Nvidia because that's where the horsepower is. i think we'd see a similar thing here with Neo and Scorpio because average gamers might not even care about them, but the enthusiast console gamers that don't want to buy a high end PC but are interested in better graphics and more power will see these two new units as valid options. and since Scorpio will be more powerful, it's the obvious choice.

so i don't think it will make much of a difference if Sony announces Neo tonight or at any other game event this year, because the outcome likely won't change much. people said it's good that Sony isn't showing Neo because they don't have anything ready to show, yet people went nuts for Scorpio that only showed rough specs and a Fall 17 release date.

strange times.

Todd Howard - "We are moving Fallout 4 to VR, and to have a console that can support that at the speed and resolution that we really want...i think will be magical."

I wonder if this is hinting that PS4 VR was not the standards they wanted. Could just be reading too much into that comment though.

Bit stupid if it doesn't have exclusives, how are you going to build a console like that and then not utilise it.
What makes you think they won't utilise it? PC was destroying the Xbox 360 and PS3 in terms of image quality and more at the end of the last generation but they still had the same games.

Sony Neo department must be in complete panic mode. Blindsided (relatively speaking in corporate timelines) by a devastating punch from Team Green.

Can't wait to see what happens and how Team Blue reacts.

True MS isn't on the back foot from that POV. I could imagine a scenario where they didn't mention Scorpio and Sony shows the Neo and MS is lttp again having to play catch up with the PR.

Now Sony kind of has to answer the power question or MS gets to frame the next gen in their terms.

This is only true if you assume MS is going to do better with the Scorpio than the XboxOne. The scorpio isn't going to be a guaranteed success just because it's more powerful.

Bit stupid if it doesn't have exclusives, how are you going to build a console like that and then not utilise it.
The PS4K, as of now, isn't allowed to have exclusives. And from the looks of it, Microsoft may be marketing this as just a more powerful Xbox One rather than a new Xbox. As such, they likely wouldn't want to screw over existing consumers. Plus, Sony's mandate is gonna hold back multiplatform games on the Scorpio either way.

not denying that. I'm arguing a 4tf system that plays the same games and a 6tf system that plays the same games are in the same boat. You can't really call one a new generation and not the other.
It's funny when one console is 1.2 ft and the other is 1.84 and there are still notable differences in resolution and other things.

People are worried about yearly, and I think yearly would be a mistake. Every three years? That sounds more reasonable to me.

I'm really going to miss the 4-6yr cycle.

Scorpio is holiday 2017, which will be 4 years since the PS4/Xbox One. So you wont be missing it very long.

No. There are no more generations folks. Get that through. The model has changed for consoles, and this is it.

Sony's not going to match specs guys. Jesus, dev kits are out. The scorpio console will be more than a half year later.

It was originally 2GB of GDDR5 on the spec sheet. Then it was bumped to 4GB before their memory supplier pulled a miracle.

You spelled "PS4 OG" wrong (and the Xbox OG will still be supported as well)

No it's more like MS exiting the console biz .

The specs of Scorpio are almost irrelevant . It's the approach to software that will separate Sony and MS. Not sure if yr traditional console owner will want to buy into a future whee the hardware you buy is almost instantly outdated running sw that's meant to run decently on all windows 10 variations...

I think Sony's more measured approach to this is better for me, I don't want a PC like open ended platform, I want a set base and games optimised for that. We've seen the benefits of that approach ..hence why console's are so popular and stuff all people having gaming PCs in their lounges..... Scorpio is MS's end game they have been working towards since they got in the console biz ...

Because Xbox One is still alive and has plenty of games coming out for it. They just announced the system and the road map, but the full reveal and price is still to come.

It was a bad move imo. I think its going to kill hardware sales.
MS was really tired of having the weaker console and that was only going to get worse as the generation continued. They needed to hit reset but I think it will be at significant cost to the longevity of the X1.

Isn't that only 5.5? Maybe overclocked, I imagine they could get pretty close to 6.

Boost clocks seem to be 1266 which would get you 5.8 Tflops. When the AIB partners turn the clocks up another 20 MHz with their SuperOC™ Edition you're basically there.
