Todd Howard - "We are moving Fallout 4 to VR, and to have a console that can support that at the speed and resolution that we really want...i think will be magical."

I wonder if this is hinting that PS4 VR was not the standards they wanted. Could just be reading too much into that comment though.

Translation...

We need much more brute force for our less than desirable engine optimization for VR.

See that folks? Now everyone is talking about hardware instead of games, this is the reason Sony will not address Neo today.

They had nothing new to the table for software really, so I see why this was done to shift focus.

what's the difference if the games still need to run on the 1.21 tf xbox one?

There is no new generation happening here
I don't think this is a good argument. I get where you are coming from, but games that are coming out on PCs today, are still able to run on PCs that are 5+ years old.

The idea that a game needs to be specifically designed for one piece of hardware is out-dated. Sure, technically, if developers focus on one piece of hardware, they might be able to squeeze out more power. But that's no longer a viable option for most developer's nowadays.

I don't have any hard statistics for what I am about to say, but I'm sure most game developers build their games on powerful workstations/PCs and than downscale the settings for it to run well on Xbox One and PS4.

Well, it's almost a fivefold increase in performance compared to XB1 in terms of GPU Flops. That's roughly the same as the step from 360 to XB1.
Agree, and that's what I meant with Project Scorpio not really being a mid-cycle update, but being a true next-gen console.

What games are going to be built from the ground on this "next gen" console?
None. And I bet very few are even nowadays for Xbox One and PS4. Most games are build on PCs nowadays and than adjusted to run well on PS4 and Xbox One.

To the people who know PC gaming, how much would it cost to build a PC with comparable specs today? Is this as powerful as a mid-tier PC or is it more in line with higher end PCs?
That 4K line has me pretty confused, because I thought that was only really prevalent in higher end machines(without compromising other specs that is).

Sony Neo department must be in complete panic mode. Blindsided (relatively speaking in corporate timelines) by a devastating punch from Team Green.

Can't wait to see what happens and how Team Blue reacts.

lol yeah they are going to sell >100m ps4 the panic is real haha

To people who are confused about why have a new Xbox S and Scorpio you just have to look at the phone market.

Scorpio is the new Flagship Xbox, like a flagship Iphone, it is the top dog.

Then they have a older reduced price for cheaper tech. in revisions. Xbox S is for people at a lower price point. Think teenagers who are getting their first console at xmas, people in non-western markets who get PS3 and Xbox 360s years after everyone else.
People buy Iphone SE's because they want a Iphone experience but they don't want best of the best.

They do it this way so Xbox remains a shared Ecosystem where the games work on all xboxs and where everyone can play together regardless of what xbox you have. It examplifies that Xbox is a delivery system, not just a static analog box that cannot grow.

Exactly.

Pretty simple concept and as was said today, it's what people are used to with digital consumption on other devices.

We all are just conditioned from 30 years of how it was done before. Me, literally, since I started with Atari 2600 on release day

The Scorpio is also 17 or so months out. We'll get another full generation of video cards by then, and will be close to getting a second.

That's what I don't get about this. I know people say "some people just don't like to game on PC" but if every major exclusive is going to be available on PC, it just makes sense in the long run.

Whatever anyway. I said at the start of this gen that this would be my last one and I meant it. I'm down to pick up a Neo, but a Scorpio will be a step too far. I'll just build/upgrade my PC and leave it at that.

Cyberpunk, Witcher 3, Halo 6 and many more running on this hardware. Oh my...

I really like MS transparency about the new consoles. Their messaging was simply excellent to.

1 question.. how are they achieving 300+ Gb/s

"Small hit" in terms of Microsoft. They did just pay 26.2 Billion dollars in cash for LinkedIn. I have a feeling a lot the pricing will depend on how well their PC software sales are. That is money they wouldn't have been getting for the most part. I am willing to bet $399-$449. They won't make a mistake at $499 again. (Unless Sony does that first)

The XBox division does not have all of MS´s money you know. If the Scorpio will lose them money then that´s not good for their division.

they should just let us replace memory and gpus if thats where its headed... actually... they should just stop making dedicated machines and lets us completely customize it in terms of power and memory...

PCs already do that... actually consoles should just be PCs.

There's a big segment of customers (myself included) that don't want to deal with the hassle of building or upgrading a PC. And there's what consoles are for.

This. This. This.

No it's more like MS exiting the console biz .

The specs of Scorpio are almost irrelevant . It's the approach to software that will separate Sony and MS. Not sure if yr traditional console owner will want to buy into a future whee the hardware you buy is almost instantly outdated running sw that's meant to run decently on all windows 10 variations...

I think Sony's more measured approach to this is better for me, I don't want a PC like open ended platform, I want a set base and games optimised for that. We've seen the benefits of that approach ..hence why console's are so popular and stuff all people having gaming PCs in their lounges..... Scorpio is MS's end game they have been working towards since they got in the console biz ...
2013 is that you?

Don't trust Bethesda with anything technological.

As of june 29th with the 480 building a PC like this would cost about $600. Maybe less if you skimp on the CPU. There's a new generation of graphics cards out that can run 4k/30 reasonably well.

I guess this is why it has the code name "Scorpio":

Your move, Sony. You've been complacent for too long this gen. I want the good ol' Sony of the PS3 era (better PS+ line up, frequent firmware updates, better accessory support -still waiting for Bluetooth mics-). If they can also match (or even exceed) the 6TF spec target, that's an added bonus. Zen is a must as well. $499. Just do it.

Just re-watched the announcement video.

"over 320 GB/s" of memory bandwidth :D :D :D

"8 cpu cores" :D :D :D

this stuff is just as exciting a the 6TF gpu

I wonder what the overall power is for this thing.

Excellent announcement by Microsoft (apart from the "highest quality pixels"-part, that was funny). It's still far off, so we'll see how things work out for them, but a market with several players bringing out competitive, appealing products is great for everyone, so I hope all the best for them.

Though personally I'm building a VR-ready gaming PC soon, so I won't really need it.

Bit stupid if it doesn't have exclusives, how are you going to build a console like that and then not utilise it.

Console gamers will get an introduction to what PC gamers went through in recent years.

People building gaming PCs in 2011-2012 had systems outstripped consoles in power by ridiculous margins, but were mostly just playing games built with 6-7 year old hardware in mind. Solid IQ/framerate and better textures were nice, but we didn't really start seeing games look like they were making a generational leap from uprezzed 360 title until 2014-2015.

These systems will run into the same issues with 95% of the games released.

Console manufacturers love to throw up the smartphone hardware cycle when justifying these upgraded systems, but how many games/apps actually make use of the latest generation of flagship phone hardware when they release? So few as to be virtually 0%.

Sony said it more simpler , it's like smartphones

This is only true if you assume MS is going to do better with the Scorpio than the XboxOne. The scorpio isn't going to be a guaranteed success just because it's more powerful.

no, but if you make the broad statement that MS lost so much ground because of the DRM Fiasco and the specs being underpowered, then those problems have been fixed.

Every other decision about the Xbox One is broadly categorised under those things.

I wonder if it will be like mobile gaming, where developers choose which devices to support.

Most devs tend to support as many devices as possible for the biggest audience, but maybe they can choose to only support the high end if they want?

-Correct me if I'm wrong.

GTX 1080 = 9.0 TFLOPS
GTX 1070 = 6.5 TFLOPS
GTX 980Ti = 6.5 TFLOPS
Scorpio GPU = 6.0 TFLOPS (Assuming Nvidia's grading system?)
NEO GPU = ~4.5 to 5.5? TFLOPS (Assuming Nvidia's grading system?)
GTX 980 = 5.3 TFLOPS

For comparison. All pretty much within range, so far as 1080p is concerned. All support VR too.

It's the 4K with xx FPS when things get fuzzy.

The GTX 1080 will obviously shoot the benchmarks off the chart, but the rest seem to be pretty close in performance.

So, HOPEFULLY, we won't see much variance in Graphics or Performance in the coming "GEN" of games between PC/Scorpio/Neo. Exclusives will mean much more than they even do right now.

/fingers crossed.

The thing is I don't see this changing the software distribution.

Let's face one thing: This is not gonna change the situation of xbox in japan at all so I don't see it getting it additional japanese support except for one token game like they had at the release of xbone. After that, sales will just die

And I don't expect it to sell gangbusters in europe either as it has very little brand loyalty over here.

Now with that said, i'm really confused by this huge jump in specs considering it's STILL linked to the xbox one thing and brings back my fears about iterative console.

Either these specs will be meaningless because games will still have to run at a good level on both xbox one and scorpio. Not counting that devs will still want to get that ps4 and psneo market.

And I guess they want to be future ready for evolution of gens, but since we're going iterative consoles at this point, why bother making something so powerful if it's going to be underutilized ?

Unless, of course, they're really gonna push games on the Xcorpio, meaning xbone owners will feel even more boned as now they'll feel they're missing out on a way superior experience barely 4 years after the start of this gen

Based on the die they showed, that didn't look like Polaris 10. It seemed about the same size (slightly smaller) than Polaris 10.

KknnjwX.jpg

It also seemed to be using traditional GDDR5 memory and not HBM. The 320GB/s also lines up very well with GDDR5x like I have been speculating, only at higher clock speeds.

They specifically said "SOC" so unless I'm missing something that seems really small

But doesn't it look like there are 12, presumably 1GB chips? If so would that be a 384 bit interface and slower clock than you said?

It does feel like a new generation.

Is Rise of the Tomb Raider really a 360 game? Is Destiny really a PS3 game? Shadow of Mordor?

There are going to be Scorpio games that are clearly hobbled in order to play on the One.

If Neo already has dev kits out in the wild and is really only 6-8 months away, I don't really see how Sony can answer this. If they can't match or better the Scorpio's performance, it's going to be tough to sell people on buying another Playstation for just for some moderate upgrades and 4K upscaling. It's too much of a half-step to be really compelling at that point. They can't really talk up the Neo's specs anyway, if it's just been completely outclassed by Scorpio.

I think they would probably be better off cancelling the Neo as we know it and going back to the drawing board on a more capable upgrade system -- though I don't know if 18 months is enough time to engineer a mostly new console.

And so it is AMD's Vega after all, isn't it? I wonder if this got Sony legit shook. They can't go forward with their Polaris plans.

If this xbox is really 6 t's, I'm day one.

And so it is AMD's Vega after all, isn't it? I wonder if this got Sony legit shook. They can't go forward with their Polaris plans.

I hope Sony is crying and whimpering somewhere in a corner. Competition is good for consumers. Sony and Microsoft going into a power war is a win for everyone.

So I guess they are waiting for the Scorpio to launch before they unlock the power of the stacked dye in all existing Xbones...

Seems like you're being willfully ignorant. The leaks gave us our Scorpio specs, the leaks that gave us the NEOs existence gave us it's specs with 4.4tf along with a launch either this fall or or next spring. Do you really think that's enough time to bump their console two TFS? Obviously not and obviously everyone will wait for a Scorpio, but in the long run those who want power will grab a Scorpio effectively turning the situation around. Do you think those looking for a powerful console will grab a neo when they know the Scorpio is coming?

Not ignorant, just not drinking the koolaid and can think of this from a strategic pov.

So say PS Neo launches this year (because if you are so set on believing in rumors, you must go all the way). That means Sony will leave MS in the dust power wise and sales wise even more so for one year. You honestly believe that 'obviously everyone will wait for a scorpio'? lol come on now. Tell you what, let's see how this plays out and have this convo again. Bookmark this. Sony is not at a disadvantage as you may think they are here.

Oh and Sony did bump specs for PS4 after the initial dev kits fyi. But again let's see the final specs release and the launch date and see if your theory of people not buying Neo and holding out for Scorpio play out

If dev kits are in Devs hands, Neo won't be getting any significant bumps.

It's ok that Scorpio will be more powerful. The world won't end and sales won't be affected. You'll all be fine.
