First Look: Santa Monica Studio’s New God of War on PS4

So Kratos might not be such an edgelord adolescent fantasy whose callousness and ultra-violence inches closer to and farther past the line of tastelessness?

I'm down.

They made Kratos, a character universally hated, seem interesting within a ten minute demo. I'd say that's pretty extraordinary.

It looks absolutely fantastic.
Haha, yeah right. Get out of that GAF bubble.

Just learning that this is supposed to actually be Kratos. I don't agree with the decision if true. I'm fine with a new experience, new character type and all, but Kratos should be Kratos.

Dad of War is a great concept. God, I'm going to be so screwed next year. Currently know of this, Horizon, Persona, ME, and FFXII Zodiac that I am buying. And I never get that many games a year.

Yeah anyone can see that it's an opening area of the game so they don't rush to make claims of being dumbed down.

People judge what they're shown, not imaginary concepts of what it might be in the future, no. And they are going to require a damn good rework of it to actually be good, the jankiness is too darn much.

The combat looks like a huge downgrade, the little shit being in the game hopefully won't be there throughout as well. Give Kratos two axes at the least, but this looked very much like the tutorial so can't say I'm worried too much at the moment, I trust Barlog too much seeing he's the guy behind GOW2.

Count me in the camp that is really interested in this new direction for the series. I thought the demo was cool and I'm excited to see more.

It's exactly what the franchise needed. When a new God of War was known to be in production I could hear the audible collective grown coming through the Internet, no one wanted it. A reboot was the only option and they obviously knew that.

His experience with his son is sounding a lot like neil's experience when his daughter was born and what drove some inspiration for tlou

Anyone noticed that Hellblade is taking similar approach to gameplay?

Hate to say it but the gameplay looks like a carbon copy of Ryse...

I was really skeptical about another God of War, but I'll be damned, they got me wanting more. Every change they're making is for the best. That opening with the live orchestra was so damn awesome, too.

Yea, okay. Continue to make claims on the entire combat system (you didn't say the combat looks bad, you went out and said it looks dumbed down) which is almost entirely impossible to tell at this point.

But you do you.

I never did own a Playstation. My brother did and he would rarely let me play (downside of being the younger sibling)

I always like the story of GOW. This looks like a really good change IMO.

Gameplay looks similiar, just a slightly different feel

Kill it with fire

Now I know how Devil May Cry fans felt
Combat looks so janky, not smooth at all.
Can Kratos even jump anymore? I don't remember seeing that in the trailer. I hope the combat really picks up cuz right now, hell naw. Hell to the naw.

Seeking to control his rage in the land of Vikings and Norse mythology? Can't wait to see how often he loses his shit in that environment, lol. It's beautiful.

This version of him will never be as iconic as the original though, no matter how good the game is. That's why they should've went with a different character.

the original's a damn bore now. growth is good. just because he grew a beard and chilled out doesn't negate that he was once in rage killing the greek gods. hell you saw him rip this nordic troll guy's horn off. same old dude, just has to change some diapers now too.

Which this is. People change over time. This is the natural progression for Kratos aftet being given plenty of time to reflect on tearing down the Olympic pantheon.

Haha!

Before E3 2016:
"Waaaah! GoW has gotten boring, mashy and derivative, change the formula"

After E3 2016:
"Waaaah! It's too different, Where's my angry Kratos, Where's my quick time events"

You guys are hilarious. So Which is it?

I loved the old GoW and I love this change! day 1!

I've played a few of the older God of War games and simply never been interested in them. The on-rails camera, the dumb combo system with swinging chains and other such bullshit (I recognize some people like that kind of gameplay, but personally it wasn't for me). The rage stuff could be fun at times (wrecking that dude's head) and dumb at others. The spectacle was always terrific. But I just never had any interest playing through the games. Didn't find them enjoyable.

This looks awesome.

So Kratos should never grow as a character?

Very happy about change. The series needed it.

However, the combat in that demo looked incredibly dull and scripted. Hopefully it gets far more varied and exciting as the game goes on.

Are we even sure that they are sticking with Kratos throughout the entire game?

The trailer almost felt like a bit of a red herring in that all the action was focused on Kratos, but the experience gain seemed to be for his son. Tracking +25, Archery +50, etc. Kratos has no need for this and the gameplay trailer demonstrated that his son was learning, not Kratos. I feel as if there's going to be a point in the game the son becomes the main character, or at least playable, and the actions you take as Kratos will contribute to the sons's growth. How that takes form is a question that has yet to be answered.

...what did you expect Kratos to be like if he'd survived the ending of God of War 3?

Exactly. The last GOW game completely bombed. People are tired of the formula, it's well overdue for change.

I'd say 4 games is a good time to reboot a formula. Good example is Resident Evil. Examples where people have completely lost interest in a franchise that hasn't changed up its formula: Gears of War.

I didn't realise it was still our original Kratos (I was assuming it was maybe a reboot), so cheers to the observant peeps pointing out Kratos still had the scar Zeus gave him.

I'm really looking forward to playing a more thoughtful? reflective? contemplative? Kratos. I'm a bit wary about the combat changes, but as long as it feels responsive, I'll give it a go.

Really shocked with TLOU style pacing and OTS combat angle. Clearly, they are just starting on production and I don't see this completed till 2018.

I don't want growth for Kratos. Him being a big dumb brute bad guy that happened to be facing dudes worse than him was what made him so cool. He was so refreshing before, now it looks like he'll be more like other heroes we've seen.

I'll accept this though. I'm not the type that takes it as far as letting this retroactively ruin the entire character for me.
...what did you expect Kratos to be like if he'd survived the ending of God of War 3?

I'm saying they should've retired him from being the main character. Run this kind of story with another dude.

Honestly I would have preferred if they were going to change everything then just to not use God of War/Kratos and created a new IP. Given GoW a bit more rest time and brought him back a little later. Kratos here felt waaaay out of place, awkwardly positioned within the world and the characters and the voice acting was just completely off.

I need to see more but I guess it didn't help the scene almost just felt ripped from TLoU. Didn't quite work for me. It did look graphically stunning however as expected.

I like the new Kratos, the quick time events are still there.

And the gameplay is shitty.

I'm hoping the narrative push isn't the son getting killed.

And I want to see Thor.

Nah, it's Kratos getting killed early on then you play the game as the son, 15 years later.

Also Kratos is the last boss for reasons. Get that "it's like poetry, it rhymes" shit like with Kratos/Zeus.
