Deputies are searching for a young child who was dragged into the water by an alligator near Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

The 2-year-old child was dragged into the Seven Seas Lagoon about 9:30 p.m., Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Rose Silva said.

Deputies are searching the waters and put crime-scene tape around the water. Multiple emergency vehicles filled the front drive of the Victorian-style hotel.

Silva said the child has not been found.

Extremely sad news coming out of Walt Disney World :(

as many times as I've seen this scene, I've never thought of it as a being full of alligators. But of course, giant lake, and Florida...

Damn. Doubtful that the child will be found alive. :/

Wonder how the gator took him in the first place. Were the parents not paying attention or something?

No word yet so don't know. They do have signs all over saying no swimming or getting in the water, but I've seen this rule broken MANY times.

I've seen quite a few in my days on the boat or monorail, they are definitely in there.

Sad to hear. The child is more than likely deceased. An alligator has no problem killing an adult. A two year old wouldn't stand a chance.

That's really awful. I know you just can't keep those fucking things out of anywhere in Florida, but it's strange to think of this happening at a place like Disney. I feel terrible for the parents.

Horrible.

This is why I used to get nervous when my kid was even walking along the boat dock of our canal. I just imagine some big hungry gator coming up and getting him.

Now he swims in the lake. 8 years old in the middle of a lake that we've seen a dozen or more gators on.

I sometimes look at my inlaws and my wife and go "are you out of your fucking mind?" but sit and just watch him...just watch him and not have fun because I'm fucking terrified he's going to be pulled under.

Fucking hell. I had hoped they had beaten the gator off and got the kid back, but... if they haven't found him, they probably won't.

there are aligators in the lagoon???

It's Florida, there are gators all over.

Walt Disney World is also built on former swamp lands.

I live in Orlando and have been to Disney likely over 200 times and had no idea there were gators. I take that ferry a lot and don't recall ever seeing even fish in there. Just birds.

It's a man made lake and i assume Disney must remove gators when they find them but miss some of them. There aren't really signs for gators, though it says don't swim. You can rent tiny boats for two people and go drive around the water.

They do remove them if they can, but it's Florida. They will find their way in and there's no stopping that. There is guaranteed to be at least 1 in there at all times (probably more).

It's EXTREMELY rare to have something like this happen, even in Florida. It can happen though obviously and it's horrifying when it does.

There are literally alligators EVERYWHERE in South Florida. Lol

Still kind of surprising as there usually aren't that many cases of aggression towards humans but I guess a small child is different.

Plenty of gators in North Florida too. At least northeast Florida.

The same way Gators and Crocs take dogs and zebra and gazelle and any other poor animal that comes close to the water line and looks like an easy snack. People need to be vigilant in areas where alligators are known to be.

Terrifying stuff. Sadly since it has been several hours since it happened the best you can hope for is that it was over quickly for the child. There will not be a happy ending here.

I was just at the Grand Floridian with my 3 year old daughters couple of weeks ago. I cannot even imagine something like this happening. So sad.

All of Florida is swampland and there are gators everywhere. But how does a 2 yr old get dragged away by a gator? Where were the adults? Where was the child? Where are the details in that article? There had to have been some extreme negligence involved. RIP to the baby, at least he probably died quickly.

You should put your foot down and tell your wife and in laws he can't swim in there.

I haven't seen any details yet, but when I do (going to bed soon) I'll update the OP.

Because if he's meandering around the edge of the water, it doesn't take but a second for a 400+ pound animal with to snap and drag a 2 year old into the lagoon, even if adults were around.

Jesus, that just reads like an accident waiting to happen. You've seen a dozen or more gators and still let him swim there? Buy a pool or something, man.

There's fake beaches at these hotels on the lake 🙁 There's a good chance he wasn't even deep in the water or out of sight when the gator got him

I seriously sat right at the waters edge on New Year's this year watching the fireworks and probably wouldn't have had I thought about gators in that lake
