You think if Sony opened their own PC storefront to exclusively sell PC ports of their games, there wouldn't be a massive outcry? PC gamers are the most vocal, complaining demographic out there. If it's not on Steam, it might as well not exist for the majority of PC gamers.

Plus, the obvious fact that Spider-Man Homecoming is a Sony Pictures film, so it makes perfect sense that it would be a Playstation exclusive. Spidey is a massive global brand, the MCU film will be easily be >1$b at the global box office, so a tie in with PS4 will give the console a massive marketing boost.

A license deal is completely different then third party money hats. Anyway everyone should be happy Spider-Man is out of activisions hands.

Marvel legally has the rights to give developers access to their entire cast of characters thanks to Activision's hold on certain franchises (the X-Men for example) expiring back in 2014. The only license Activision has left is the Spider-Man movie tie-in license, which expires next year. This isn't a matter of Marvel not being able to use X-Men & Fantastic Four characters, it's the fact that they don't want to. Marvel's been trying to minimize the exposure of the X-Men & the Fantastic Four in an attempt to lower the popularity of both properties (which would in turn screw over Fox). Within the last few years, Marvel has had a bit of a feud with 20th Century Fox over the properties they still hold the movie rights for (the X-Men & the Fantastic Four). It grew to the point where, after the release of Marvel: Contest of Champions (the mobile Injustice knock-off by Kablam), Marvel imposed a complete ban on all X-Men & Fantastic Four characters in games made after Contest of Champions. One of the first victims of the ban was Marvel Mighty Heroes, whose developer (DeNA) had this to say on the matter.

  • As stated earlier, all new games made after Contest of Champions are not allowed to use any X-Men & Fantastic Four characters. This includes the likes of Wolverine, Deadpool, Doctor Doom, Cyclops, Jean Grey/Phoenix, X-23, Storm, Magneto, Super-Skrull, Sentinel, & more.
  • Games made before the ban with active contracts, like Marvel Heroes (the PC MMO), can add whoever they want until their current contracts expires (Ex: Gazillion's existing contract with Marvel expires in 2019).
  • Remasters &/or ports of older games can be re-released untouched (Ex: The Deadpool remaster for PS4 & XB1).
  • The Maximoff Twins, Quicksilver (Pietro Maximoff) & Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff), are only allowed on a case-by-case basis (Ex: Lego Marvel's Avengers). Only their comic book & MCU incarnations can be used in the event that Marvel allows a developer to use one or both of the Twins, & zero references to their X-Men history can be made. They've also been banned from games more times than not, but their inclusion in certain games isn't impossible.

What I was trying to get at earlier. Besides, hate and anger tends to blind folks from thinking straight sometimes. Sony and Marvel agreed on a licensing agreement for the games. How is it Sony's fault if Marvel agreed on the agreement and went exclusive? If anything, it speaks volumes that EA, Ubisoft or Take Two simply didn't want to deal with pouring resources into funding a high quality Spider-Man game and Marvel were unwilling to fund it themselves.

Hopefully this paves way for Sony to work on Bond licensing next as they definitely see value in bolstering the Spider-Man IP to their brand, like how Bond has become lately. Hell, anyone do it, as long as you're willing to put the effort into it, exclusive or not. I'm here for good games, not politics.

The only other bit of evidence that I would like to add to the pile of shenanigans here is when David Brevik (creator of Diablo) got put "in the penalty box" by Marvel when the Marvel Heroes online game ran a promotion featuring the Fantastic Four last summer when that abysmal movie came out. This was one of the rumored cause for Gazillion's recent redundancies.

Isaac Perlmutter, the current CEO of Marvel, is a vicious motherfucker. Don't expect anything X-Men or Fantastic Four related in a videogame for years because he is definitely playing a long game that even includes trying to oust Kevin Feige from his role in the movie business.

It would work but I think Marvel's starting to waver on their Inhumans push for the MCU and other marketing. There have been plenty of rumors that their appearance on Agents of Shield was considered a bust and is leading them to reconsider building another multi-media brand around them.
 
Happy to see Insomniac be the dev team for this. I'm sure they'll nail down the web swinging mechanics. I'm curious to see how the combat is done.

Because he considers Feige to be an outsider to Marvel. He came in later down the road well after the production of Iron Man 1 began. Perlmutter is one of the key guys that brought Marvel back from bankruptcy in the 90s (along with Joe Quesada, Avi Arad, and the like).

Perlmutter is hedging his bets on eventual underperformance of Marvel movies. Civil War didn't have any hiccups, but the last Avengers movie kind of gave him hope. He'd rather be a king over ruins than a rich prince.

This is more because ABC Television handles Agents of Shield, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, etc while Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios handles the movies. The compartmentalization of the Disney hydra

make it too much of a mess. However, Feige has next to no control over Marvel television whereas Perlmutter manages television, animation, videogames, and any other operations.

So don't expect it to get better.
 
Beautiful game, but a shit control can DESTROY a Spidey game so I am cautiously optimistic.

Also, kudos for having cojones to change the classic suit, even if I am not a fan of the white spider logo

I liked the music in the trailer. Something about the percussion really excited me. However, I also really hope they get a Danny Elfman-esque aesthetic for the moments when you're swinging. Man, he really nailed the essence of Spider-Man's pendulum-like swinging with his music. If they can bring that style to this game I will be very, very happy!

Civil War wasn't going to have as much Iron Man in it as the finished product did. Downey and CAA apparently stepped in and lobbied for a larger role and more points (percentage bonus on film's profits). Perlmutter has been arguing that he doesn't want to put so much money and power into Downey's hands due to the inevitable day that he stops doing Marvel movies.

Perlmutter definitely isn't an idiot. He's just a power-hungry mother-fucker that will effectively micromanage the shit out of a company. I'm betting Disney Interactive's collapse earlier this year led to him cutting some deals with Sony.

But hell, if we can get a great Spider-Man game out of it, I'll welcome our evil comic CEO overlords.
