Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

Tweaktown's track record is a bit spotty, so I'd take it with a grain of salt like any rumor.

Yep. It may be late July before the market is truly flooded with 1080's, but availability should be steadily improving between now and then. I think this week and maybe next will be the end of the most extreme part of the drought.

So when looking at cards like the EVGA Gaming ACX 3.0 and the Ftw edition, is the main difference clock speeds out of box? Is there a reason I couldn't OC it to the same limit and save $40?

Sorry for the noob questions lol

The FTW uses a (larger) custom PCB with improved power delivery. It also has larger fans on the cooler, and a redundant BIOS. Theoretically, someone can create a modified BIOS which allows for more power, thus a higher overclock. You could flash the second BIOS while leaving the other one stock for a fallback.

The ACX3 and SC versions are just different coolers on a reference PCB, with the SC having slightly higher clocks.

So far all cards have had a similar ceiling, but time will tell if things improve for the custom cards on the BIOS front. If it does, then an extra BIOS is a nice luxury.

Yes- ootb clock speeds would be the biggest difference for most. About the only reason to spend the extra $40 would be the dual BIOS and the fact that it has more power phases/higher quality capacitors, etc. With Pascal, that's not likely to deliver you better clocks like it has been in the past. One advantage you might see from the higher end custom boards would be less coil whine due to the higher quality capacitors, but even that's a bit of an unknown until more cards are out in the wild.

I might cave and get one of these instead of waiting for a possible 1080ti...

Possibly a stupid question but is there a consensus on which brand has the best card?

Not really. They're not even all out in the wild yet. The GB-G1, MSI Gaming X, and Asus Strix have all seen limited release, and appear to be more or less interchangeable. EVGA FTW is shipping out from EVGA this week, and should compare well to those.

Basically, your three choices are:

- get a Founder's Edition card and pay an early adopter's tax at $699
- get one of the reference model 3rd party cards for around $620-$640, some of which have better cooling than the reference blower
- get an AIB card for $670-$720 with less noise/better cooling, but no better post-tweaking clock performance than reference.

Thanks. I actually thought everything was released by now but I'm in the UK and some aren't coming until July anyway. Will check in a month or so.

I haven't really gotten a chance to mess with my Vive since my 1080 has come in. I just had Lasik done and I really wanted to go easy on my eyes. My week follow-up is tomorrow so I'm hoping he clears me to do any activity I please.

Yeah you don't wanna mess with that until you know you're all good! I'm hoping to get LASIK done at some point, for now I'm just waiting on VR lenses to ship my Vive inserts and lenses :)

my 1080 ftw order just got pushed back again, this time from june 22 to july 8. absolute torture at this point :(

That's ridiculous, I could never have waited that long, glad I opted for the MSI - Minimal Sound Interference card.......;)

Thanks! Is there a summary of these kinds of distinctions for each of the manufacturers? In the absence of that, I think I've narrowed it down to, in this order, the FTW, the Gigabyte Gaming 8, and the ASUS STRIX for the higher end versions.

Also, when choosing a model, make sure you have enough room in your case. The FTW is the standard 10.5" length, but the STRIX is a behemoth at almost 12" long.

Oh shit haha. My case has 11.5" clearance, so thanks for that info. Need to check dimensions of all the cards I have nowinstock updates for.

Here are the results on my MSI with and without nvidia inspector doing its thing.

With nvidia inspector:
Idle temp: 38
Idle clock: 215

Without:
Idle temp: 57
Idle clock: 1190

My airflow isn't great unfortunately. I need to add some more fans and plan to do so.

With three monitors it doesn't seem that easy fix with Nvidia Inspector. I can get the card to downclock but it stays at low MHz only for a second or two and there's sometimes flickering/basically quick screen corruption. I guess(?) the low MHz just isn't enough to keep three monitors running so I would need some sort of compromise between 215MHz and 1700MHz. No idea if you can somehow hack it using Nvidia Inspector.

I'm running 3 as well. One of which is 1440 144hz. I wonder why it is working for me.

Edit 2 display link + 1 dvi. Vive is plugged in hdmi but I don't leave it's power connected.

Sigh....I'm done waiting. I found a $300 980 GTX on craigslist. That's much better than my 960. And that 980 card is still no slouch.

You wasted your money, 980 isn't a good buy. For another $100 + patience you could have got a far better card in the 1070.

I've one 144Hz 2560x1440 with display port, one 60Hz 1920x1200 display port, and one 60Hz 1920x1080 DVI. I might/should test tomorrow with different setups of resolution, refresh rate, perhaps even switch connections around a bit.

Damn. And I'm sitting here annoyed I haven't heard anything from them a week after ordering...

I started a chat session with Amazon, and they said my order should arrive by next Friday (June 24). I also noticed next to my order on the page you select the order you want to chat to them about, mine said shipment 1. You might want to check and see if yours says that or anything.

Hope you mean 980 Ti. Otherwise that's a terrible deal, as you could have waited 2 more weeks for better 1070 availability or an RX 480 for similar performance at $100 less.

Newegg has the 980ti for 480. If I hadn't already waited so long that would be quick the deal. But now the 1070 beats the 980ti and is cheaper.

Thanks for finding this out. I tried the same thing but my rep rattled off sections of the self help guide. Guess that means I can use this $700 that's been sitting in my account for something this week.

Have there been any information on the MSI Armor card? Amazon has them on pre-order and since my friend no longer wanted the FTW card, I ended up cancelling the preorder with EVGA.

I personally like the black/white colouring more than the black/red on the MSI Gaming card.

EDIT: Looks like it's a cutdown version of the Gaming card with no backplate :(

Everyone's ignoring the "tired of waiting" part. Suggesting a person that's tired of waiting.. wait, seems to be ignoring everything they said.

Personally if I was tired of waiting and in a pinch for a card, I'd simply pick up anything from EVGA that's below what you want in price. Get that, submit a request to step-up, and wait. People that requested step up for FE cards on 5/27 already have cards in hand.

Everyone who ordered the 1080 FTW on where? Amazon U.S.?
I ordered on Amazon US on May 31st and have been questioning customer service about where in queue I might be. No idea at this stage, from two different reps. I don't necessarily mind waiting, but is it another week? 2 weeks? a month? I'd like to finish my new PC build sooner rather than later because this GTX 670 is not cutting it at 4K. At all.

Installed the EVGA 1080 SC ACX3.0

Nice looking card. There's a LOT of protective plastic to peel off that thing haha.

It's really dumb, line someone in here mentionned a while ago, they screwed the heatsink OVER the plastic so when you peel it off some of it still get stuck under the screws. Not a big deal but for something that expensive, come on...

Anyway... Updating GTA5 now to see how it goes... I was doing 20-30 fps with everything maxed out on my 770.

Cause I'm gonna watercool that bitch.

Amazon EVGA 1080 FTW was the wrong way to go it seems.
Ordered on May 31st, and still no ETA

Same. Ordered within a couple minutes of it going live. I would assume EVGA will allocate stock to Amazon preorders after they're done fulfilling EVGA.com preorders. But who knows...

I really don't find my FE loud at all. It's definitely quieter than my ACX2.0 970.

Well Newegg has had MSI 980 Ti's for $380 shipped the last couple day. They are right about it not being a good deal.
