Isn't this considered good practice to check whether or not CPU/RAM/MoBo are faulty before continuing? lol

He's doing a test boot. It's a good practice to make sure that all of the components work first.

I usually do it by connecting the actual power switch on the case to the computer. It works the same way but with less chances of static discharge from you blowing your new motherboard up.
Your friend should consider investing in a better case if he wants less dust inside. A good case lasts a lifetime of PC building, sure my Cooler Master HAF 932 cost me a pretty penny almost 7 years ago now but I've been using it ever since. It's a worthwhile investment.

So my Gigabyte G1 has started doing this:
it just randomly flickers like that. I really don't want to send this back. I've barely had it over a week
Send it back ASAP. If it goes bad outside of the return period, you're screwed because Gigabyte sucks as RMAs.

fuuuuck. It was fine after I unplugged it, but just got finished playing Doom for a while (no problems at all) and as soon as I closed the game it's back
Did you try updating to the latest hotfix driver? Perhaps the issue they describe is what you're experiencing?

About to do a full re-install of drivers.
I've also just confirmed that it only happens in Chrome when scrolling. Nothing else seems to cause it.

As someone who is new to NVIDIA, is the 1080 vastly worth it over the 1070? I am trying to cut down the cost of my new build, but if it's really worth it, I'll spend the cash. I just want to make sure this isn't like the 970/980 incident where the cost was different, but the power you got wasn't much.

If you're targeting 1080p60 then a 1070 should be enough. Anything higher then a 1080.

Games run just fine and in line with reviewer benchmarks, so I don't know why my 3DMark is so bad. Core clock says 2101 there, memory clock is 5594.

The 1070 handles 1440p really well too. I'd only look into the 1080 if you're doing 4k or multiple monitors.
50% higher cost for 20% higher performance (at best).

My reading is that the GTX1080 can't maintain 60 @ 2160p.
Before I sold it off to make way for Pascal, my system was a 980Ti @ 1440p(GSYNC).
But yeah, depends on his target res.
Just check the history of your core clock in afterburner after you have run the test to see that is stays at that 2.1GHz clock and don't throttle.

On the bright side it's doing a great job powering 3440x1440 on my end

The thing is, you reach a point of diminishing returns, but that point is just where you need a 15% boost to reach 60fps in almost all demanding games. You have to get that 20% boost at a much higher cost though, which is not fishy at all (

Are you sure you're fully stable on the memory?
I've noticed with mine, I can push the memory higher without crashes but performance actually goes down - probably some kind of error correction kicking in.
+400 on memory is when I started noticing a decline in performance on mine, dropped down to +300 and all was good then.

Good point. I am hoping in the next few months of getting this card at $600, but we will see how well NVIDIA deals with the demand. Anything over is really stretching the budget when I had the 1070 originally planned for my new build. I am willing to wait a little for a more reasonable price since I am buying the build parts in a few month timeframe.

A fellow Aussie who pre-ordered a G1 an hour after me and opted for cheaper shipping has an estimated delivery date of ~mid-July. My order, however, hasn't moved forward at all.
Amazon basically took orders before they even started to have anythinmg coming in. It could be next week, August, or anything in-between.
I broke down a bought a FE this morning when stock came up at Best Buy. From what I've been told,and from what others have been told as well, stock isn't going to improve until mid to late July at the earliest. I'd rather pay the extra $80 than wait another month or more. My second card is coming through Evga's step-up, but there is no telling how long that will take.

I created a chat session with an amazon rep and asked about it a couple of days ago, and they said that my 1080 SC which I bought the same day as you will arrive by next friday. We shall see if that hold true.

Definitely an unstable overclock setting. Try testing with FurMark instead.
Some games though, like The Witcher 3, simply stress the card in different ways.

I ordered the FTW from Amazon on the same day you ordered. Nothing yet.
Some games are more sensitive to overclocks. I recently had to down-clock my GTX 780 FTW because it was getting freezing in various games. I am suspecting that it might be the new driver because the OC I had was very stable in a lot of games. I went down from +116MHz down to 104MHz with stock voltage and fan speed; I messed around with the former but I would have to increase the thermal limit to 85c or even 90c and increase the speed (and decrease the life) of the fans.
I tried SLI out for a day or so. (Friend's card)
1. Scaling is alright (in the games that support it) roughly ~65%, usual for SLI, near 100% in benchmarks.
2. Support has been slipping in both quantity and quality. (This is coming from someone who's had SLI for the past two gens (780 x2 , 980 x2)
3. If you asked me this question 3 years ago, and money not being a factor, I would've said yes. But, today most new games don't support SLI at launch, so you're either waiting for patches that may never come, or you reluctantly play it with only one GPU enabled.
4. SLI frame pacing/microstutter is very much a real thing in certain games, it depends how sensitive you are to framerate variance, and there's always some games that have some SLI weirdness. For example Rise of the Tomb Raider uses FMV in certain cutscenes for some effects. The FMV effects flicker when SLI is enabled (Doesn't affect performance, but looks strange.)
Unless money is literally burning a hole in your pocket, I can't recommend SLI setups at this point.

Yeah, I have the feeling it could be weeks before we get our cards. Though, someone posted yesterday that amazon support told them their MSI should arrive this week. So, who knows.
