Very LTTP - The Playstation Vita

I'm going to rebuy one this week. I think I'm gonna get the white and black one (import from Japan, I think). The 64 GB memory card price is really hard to swallow, but that's the way to go. (It's $107 on third party Amazon.)

For some games actually prefer the Vita version to console counterparts, such as Dragon's Crown and the Rayman games. Touch screen usage is just more efficient for these titles, same reason I would have liked to have seen Okami ported. Otherwise, I usually double dip

Love my Vita. All my recommendations have been covered, but I'll add +1 for Vanillware games. Muramasa Rebirth is one of my favorite games of all time, and Odin Sphere and Dragon's Crown are amazing as well. If you're into rhythm games there's the Project Diva series as well as IA/VT Colorful if you're willing to import. The latter is my all-time favorite rhythm game.

The Vita is my favorite handheld of all time. I say this as someone who owned every Nintendo handheld since the original Game Boy.

If you have a PS4 they make for fantastic companion hardware and indeed bring a lot more value to PS Plus and cross-buy/save software.

Haters gonna hate, but IMO it's the wealth of indies that make the system great. Indies are cheap and the experiences many of them offer are perfect for portable gaming. Of course, the niche Japanese games are another draw for me. Especially if you like DRPGs, a languishing genre. But you get awesome stuff like EDF 2017 & 2 as well. If you skipped the PSP or PS1 you have a huge legacy of inexpensive software to work through on a far better piece of hardware than the PSP.

This is also the first, best (and probably last) handheld for fighting game fans. I mean, the fighting game ports are just as good as their console brethren for gameplay (assuming you aren't lost without an arcade stick) thanks to the specs, screen and dpad. They have pretty good online! That is integral. Handheld fighters on older consoles were worthless without a friend with their own system and copy. Games like Street Fighter x Tekken and Skullgirls even have cross-play with console players. Ports like The Last Blade 2 are arcade-perfect (it's actually superior to the PS4 port). I feel like this is a huge plus for the Vita that is often ignored.

I mean, just look at this list:
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
Street Fighter x Tekken
Injustice (on sale right now for $5, big story mode)
Skullgirls 2nd Encore (cross-buy)
Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax
The Blazblue Series
Arcana Heart 3 Love Max
Dead or Alive 5 Plus
The Last Blade 2 (cross-buy)
Mortal Kombat 9 (PSA: online for this title is disabled now)
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core+ R (PSA never had online)
...Do Dive Kick and Nidhogg count?

Um. Don't buy Playstation All Stars...

Also, big props to its fantastic battery in sleep mode. My 3DS dies seemingly overnight in sleep, the Vita will stay alive all week. And it automatically downloads updates!

As a PS Plus user you should make sure to use the cloud saves. For some dumb reason deleting a Vita game deletes the save, too. You're gonna wish you had sprung for the 64gb card soon...

I keep hearing this, but I've heard it's not really a game. That's not a deal breaker to me if it's like a Japanese take on Telltale or something, is that what it is?

It's a game in the same way Phoenix Wright is a game. I got it on sale for $13 on PSN. I like it but I'm glad I didn't pay more.

If you like good indie games you should get:

Downwell
Rogue Legacy
La Mulana ex
Axiom Verge
Binding of Isaac
Nuclear Throne
Super Meat Boy
Luftrausers
+
Resogun
Geometry Wars 3

Good list. Allow me to add:
Severed
Guacamelee!
Risk of Rain
Crypt of the Necrodancer
Fez
No Heroes Allowed: No Puzzles Either
Hotline Miami
Mutant Blobs Attack
The Swapper
Frozen Synapse Prime
Spelunky
OlliOlli 1&2
Velocity 2x
TxK
Big Sky Infinite
Joe Danger
Sine Mora
Pixel Junk games

More (less obvious) Recommendations:
Disgaea 4
Lumines - Amazing rhythm puzzler!
Rayman Origins and Legends - probably the best Vita platformers
Need For Speed Most Wanted - acceptable port of fantastic open world racer
Sonic All-Star Racing Transformed - the Vita's only logical answer to Mario Kart
WipeOut 2048 - the Vita's F-Zero!
Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational - the only Golf game you need!
The Pinball Arcade - free table! Cross-buy tables!
Zen Pinball - free table! Cross-buy tables! But really, pinball is awesome and these are awesome games
Metal Gear Solid HD collection - good 30 fps ports
Sly Cooper collection - good ports
Sly Cooper: thieves in time
God of War Collection - okay, these aren't great ports but they are a good deal on sale
Dungeon Travelers 2 - awful pervert stigma aside, possibly the best oldschool DRPG on Vita
Monster Monpiece - again, gross pervert angle but surprisingly fun lane-battle card game
The EDF games - it's portable EDF!

Don't buy Senran Kagura games. They're... Not very good.

Of course, people will tell you to buy Killzone Mercenary but I personally find that shooters just don't feel good to play on the Vita. KZ:M is an excellently made game, though, and your best option for the genre.

I will also champion P4G, Digimon Cyber Sleuth, FFX/X2 and Soul Sacrifice Delta.

Cheap, good PSP recommendations:
Patapon 2
Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles
Gladiator Begins
Z.H.P.
Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
God of War: Ghost of Sparta
Half Minute Hero
Brandish: The Dark Revenant
Persona 3 Portable
Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
Puzzle Quest
Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice
Pac-Man: Championship Edition (PS Mini)
Peggle (Mini)
Tetris (Mini)

1. Great place to play indies. For whatever reason, I can't do most indies on console, I just feel like I should be playing a "console experience" on Ps4. With handhelds though this admittedly stupid mental block doesn't exist.

Thank god, there is someone who feels just like I do. It's just feels wrong to play indies on PS4. Whenever I do I tell myself "I could have played this on PS3, I did not pay 400 bucks for a PS4 to play indies!". Luckily most of indie stuff also release on Vita so I can play them on more deserving platform.

I just feel like a lot of games play better on Vita. Most of the PS4/Vita ports I'd much rather play on Vita just because it's so much more handy to be able to play on the go and I'd argue they look better on the smaller screen.

I do actually! Not to a fanatical degree, but I really liked Shin Megami Tensei IV on 3DS (my first Atlus game) so Persona 4 Golden is on my list for sure.

Basically, I bought this for:

1. Great place to play indies. For whatever reason, I can't do most indies on console, I just feel like I should be playing a "console experience" on Ps4. With handhelds though this admittedly stupid mental block doesn't exist.

2. The small handful of AAA titles that came out before Sony gave up on it.

3. JRPGS

4. PSone/PSP classics.
Honestly i feel the same way and I've been thinking of getting a vita just to play some indies

I wish I never paid €80 for it. I got it with a 8GB card and Uncharted.
Uncharted was OK at best, tried a few more games, but the majority is Japanese anime-type stuff which I hate, and the rest are some cheap mobile phone indie stuff.

So now it's somewhere in the back of my closet, maybe when my daughter grows up a bit she can play Minecraft on it if that game still remains a thing in 3-4 years.

Vita is honestly the best Handheld Ive ever owned...really bummed it didnt do as well as the PSP. I think most of the indie games (Spelunky, Shovel Knight, Fez, Bastion, etc...) make it worth getting a vita alone.

Wow, thanks for all this! I've got my homework cut out for me!

I was super LTTP as well but last year I bought an OLED Vita used (but like new) from a guy off CL for something like $80 I think. Memory card gripes aside, it's a fantastic piece of kit and I sometimes wish my commutes to/from work were just a little bit longer since that's when I play the bulk of my Vita games.

I try to play things that I can only play on the Vita (P4G, Severed, etc..) or, if they are cross-buy with something on my PS4, play games whose scope and style just feel better on the smaller form factor than on my TV e.g. Axiom Verge, Nuclear Throne, etc...

Hope you get as much enjoyment out of yours as I do with mine, OP!

Congrats... the system is amazing.

some recommendations off the top of my head (i'm sure i'm missing stuff)--

arcade: TxK, Super Stardust Delta, Pinball Arcade, Zen Pinball, soldner X2, Resogun, Crimsonland, Surge Deluxe, Lumines, Velocity, Velocity 2x, Hotline Miami

racing : NFS MW, Wipeout, escape vector [not really racing, but hard to genre-fy], asphalt [asphalt is budget in every way, but still fun]

modern roguelikes -- binding of isaac, nuclear throne, spelunky, flame over

strategy -- frozen synapse,

other -- gravity rush, tearaway

platformers -- rayman origins/legends, fez, runner 2

there are also some great Musou and hunter style games.

-----------

this isn't even getting into rpgs, drpgs, etc. If you're looking to get your feet wet with drpgs, get Demon Gaze. If you already love the genre, you've got more choices... Stranger of Sword City is what people are currently playing.

then you've got the PSP library. In addition to a massive amount of jrpgs and srpgs, there are other standout gems like Gladiator Begins and Hot Shots Tennis

And you've also got a pocket PS1, and everything that entails.

How much better is the oled over the slim?not like im gonna return my slim, just curious

Ys: Memories of Celceta is a superb, fast-paced action RPG with incredible music.

Tales of Hearts R is a very good JRPG with an excellent action-based battle system and a great cast. The story itself, while not as good, isn't bad either.

I'd love to recommend Trails of Cold Steel, but I would strongly recommend playing both Trails in the Sky games first, as all three games (and several not-yet-localized ones) exist in the same continuity. CS' story can be understood without playing them, but the same is not true of the sequel's. (And CS1 ends on an insane cliffhanger, so you WILL want to play CS2 at that point.) Additionally, CS spoils some things from the Sky games. Both Sky games are available on PSP/Vita but the PC versions are superior in every way.

Do you want PSP/PS1 recommendations as well or just Vita? I can come up with plenty more if the former.

Welcome to the club man, and for a couple recommendations:

Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir - the game that you get your money's worth with. Killer combat, a rather nice story, and complexity a mile deep.

Malicious: Rebirth - super fun action game, frame rate is a little iffy, but still super fun.

Borderlands 2 - Updates have fixed the problems this game had, frame rate is tons better now. Plus it's portable.

Siralim, Binding of Issac, Nuclear Throne, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Risk of Rain, Spelunky - you want hardcore roguelike awesomeness? This is where you fuckin find it.

Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines - Quite possibly one of the greatest RPGs of all time

Sayonara Umeharakawase + - goddamned fantastic platformer with a grappling hook.

Muramasa Rebirth - masterpiece of a game, and the four chunks of DLC are incredible additions to the game.

And many more that I have failed to list!

If you stick with it, the system is incredible and this summer is a good summer to be a vita owner.

Borderlands 2 - Updates have fixed the problems this game had, frame rate is tons better now. Plus it's portable.

I can support this. If you're really into Borderlands, the novelty of being able to play your console save on the go is so, so great. The framerate still isn't great, but it's definitely more playable than it was.

Owned mine since launch, not a single regret and best handheld console of all time easily.

If you like shooters, kill zone mercenaries is amazing.

Danganrompa is also amazing, and of course Persona 4 Golden.

Also recently released were xcom enemy Unknown (or within can't remember) and civilisation revolution 2+.

Oh and the compatibility with ps1 classics alone makes it worth the price!

This one has come up enough that I guess I just have to play it lol.

How much better is the oled over the slim?not like im gonna return my slim, just curious

It terms of visual quality? I think the OLED offers richer colors and just "pops" more; but the slim's LCD screen still looks great. I messed around with a friend's Vita and think the other features that were redesigned for the slim seem pretty great too.

Haven't touched mine in over a year. Getting that urge to now. I just do the whole add all titles to Plus thing every month so I'm sure there's been something decent that I haven't played.

Vita Island is no longer accepting visitors.

I hope you enjoy your vita OP. I bought mine and didn't really care for it; a lot of the games weren't interesting to me and I tried to make it into a dedicated remote play machine (it sucks for that--god bless Mac support now).

Love my Vita. Just need a proper harvest moon game that will never happen.

Indies are my favorite part of playing Vita. Just some pick up and play type games.

Also, remote play works great with certain games. I played The Division with my friends for a week at a hotel using remote play just fine.

I mean, you can play Grim Fandango on the bus. It's wonderful.

I think other posters have done a pretty stellar job in recommending titles. It's great carrying on saves on the move on games like Guacamelee and Hotline Miami.

All aboard the Vita Train!

Here are some Vita exclusives i'd recommend to you:

TxK - Easily the best game on the system. This is a brilliant boilign down of your classic Jeff Minter tunnel shooter with a stellar soundtrack to boot. It's a shame "Atari" decided to threaten to sue him and Llamasoft over "TEPMEST 2000/TENPEST 2000".

Soul Sacrifice Delta - A unique take on the Monster Hunter-like genre (there has to be a better name for this genre), SSD tells a really intriguing story that i'd dare not spoil how viscerally satisfying the ending to is while being a challenging and thoroughly compelling adventure along the way with a fantastic multiplayer mode to boot.

Genroku Legends - This one gets overlooked a lot since it's technically DLC for Muramasa Rebirth. That being said, it's original content and a delightful tetralogy at that, building on the solid foundation of the original Muramasa with some charming characters and stories to boot.

Dokuro - A charming, if surprisingly challenging, puzzle title that has one unforgettable presentation.

Mind=0 - I seem to be in the minority in liking this game, but said fondness is not unwarranted. While the story is Persona-lite, the combat system is incredibly unique and highly challenging (so much so that i'd honestly recommend playing on Easy when you get about halfway through).

It really came out at such a bad time with Smart Phones. The Vita is a pretty impressive piece of technology. The interface is great, everything works well and games look great.

Unfortunately, it just doesn't have much of a place in the world today. Sure, you can get a better game experience on the Vita than you can a Smart Phone but most people don't care enough and nowadays, most people aren't going to carry around a dedicated video game system.

The library is tiny and there just isn't a whole lot worth doing on it. I like and own the system but it basically just sits on my desk charging and I'll pull it occasionally to play Pinball Arcade.

I think the era of handhelds are. Nintendo will have success marketing handhelds to small children but once they get old enough, they are going to want tablets and phones. It's sad but it's reality. As for the Vita, it just doesn't have a viable market.

Dariusburst
Resogun seems overlooked but I love it
Downwell has been getting a lot of time for me lately.
Odin Sphere is great on the Vita
Freedom Wars - LOVE this game, though I believe it was a PS+ at one point.
Mortal Kombat - really enjoyed this version
Volume is a great fit for Vita too
Akiba's Trip is a lot of fun too

LittleBigPlanet
Wipeout 2048
God of War Collection
Zen Pinball
Sly Cooper
Rayman Legends
Marvel vs Capcom 3
Tempest
Geometry Wars
Gravity Rush

All incredible games, well worth purchasing the system for, especially if you're on the bus/train a lot.

Danganronpa.

Danganronpa.

Danganronpa.

Danganronpa.

Fucking Danganronpa.

Just started playing this and it's awesome so far... production values are definitely better than I expected - it's like a hodgepodge of Persona, 999, and Phoenix Wright. Can't wait to see the story play out...

came to recommend dragon fin soup and of course dragon's crown if you got them through ps plus. the dev for dragon fin soup is also sending out free steam codes for the game on PC

Last i played of dragon fin soup it was very buggy. Has it improved since then?

I love the Vita so much I just bought a spare one because I was afraid they won't be available anymore that easily in the near future :| In case my launch Vita stops working. That and I'm curious about the 2000 version haha.

Just completed Axiom Verge on it (my GOTY so far) as well as Shovel Knight and Severed, all of which come highly recommended. There are so many good games, and I hardly play Japanese games.

Tearaway is amazing and a must buy since it uses all the advantages of the Vita. I also liked Sonic & All-stars Racing Transformed for the system.

What's this black and white one? I'm looking to import one from Japan also.

I love the Vita. I play most of the indie titles on it and love the selection of games. Make sure to get the Earth Defence Force titles, they are fantastic on it!

Vita's 2016 is already kicking into ridiculous mode

Grab Odin Sphere and Grand Kingdom

Play all the great Indies

We have Darkest Dungeon and Cosmic Star Heroine on the horizon

Play the Kiseki series which will have 4 games on the system by the end of the year.....

OMG the list goes on and on and on

Playing Hotline Miami is on the Vita is the best way to play that game. Couldn't play it on a pad afterwards. I did love the time I had with my Vita. Would have kept it to jailbreak but was just as easy to play roms on my Xperia Z3 with a DS4.
