A performance patch hit a few weeks after release that helped out quite a bit, I never had any issues with it after that.
$10 is a steal.
It was. 60 fps is working now, performance is better and you can disable the black bars.

I'm another one of those "I was never really interested in Harvest Moon-type games" people that ended up picking Stardew Valley up because of all of the hype, I put almost 80 hours in to it and the only reason it isn't higher is because I'm waiting on the next patch to start over. Its a lot of fun, a great game for playing while you're watching TV/listening to a podcast.
