Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

I'm moving into an apartment in a couple of months and I'm not sure which headset to get. Vive looks cool with the whole walking around I'm guessing it makes it more immersive but I'm not sure if I'll have enough space for that. And the rift being cheaper and more about a sitting situation is appealing to me.. I believe the vive can play rift games right? Is the rift available or still have stock issues?

Fucking UPS. Card was supposed to deliver today but now instead since the tractor trailer was late it won't arrive until Monday. Feels really bad man.

I feel your pain. Friday deliveries suck for this exact reason.

Wrong thread?

Hope so haha.

In all seriousness, these cards seem to all be performing very very very similarly.

yep, i read a review where the ASUS strix win just by 1 FPS almost in every game. MSI and Gigabyte card performs head to head.

and i swear this 1080 card is way lighter than a gigabyte 980 G1. Installed and ready to go!

edit : wow geforce experience really handles everything smoothly,

Once you try the Vive you will make space for it. It also works great with seated experiences.

Finally grabbed a G1 1080.. And its coming today ! Wohoo.. Ive bern trying to find MSI but seems to be out of stock everywhere in my area..

Are the impression for G1 here any good ?

Received mine yesterday, haven't tried overclocking yet, but it's taken everything that I've thrown at it and held up incredibly well. Coming from a 970 it was a noticeable improvement. Build seemed solid. I haven't noticed any whine with mine and the fans are relatively quiet, but I'm also not sitting on top of my case. I've traditionally been more of a Strix guy, but I'm satisfied so far.

If you can afford the Vive, get it. Motion controls is crucial to the VR experience. It's the difference between trackIR and actually feeling you're there.

It drives me bonkers that there were moments of availability for the EVGA FTW at Newegg, and I'm not sure whether they've even filled their preorders from their in house store.... But there are plenty on EBay. Asshole scalpers..

Also a buyers beware, OCUK is jacking up the prices due to GBP instability -- don't order, I bet the will take their sweeeeet time to readjust the prices back to normal level. Gross, how about just waiting a few more hours until things have probably stabilized a bit.

just installed mine today..
open steam sales.. bought Don't Starve.

i literally bought my 1080 to play Don't Starve...

For all those waiting on the EVGA FTW, yesterday I received both my EVGA FTW 1080 GTX and a Gigabyte G1 1080GTX.

Now, I haven't messed much with overclocking since both these cards ramp up to 1950+ core clock on their own while running Firestrike 1.1.

Interestingly enough, the EVGA had a graphics score of 22,112 while the Gigabyte had a graphics score of 22,608. Somehow the G1 with one 8 pin connector beat out the FTW that uses 2 8-pin connectors. So I'm not sure there is much of a difference in performance with most of these AIB revisions. At least not enough to wait for one specific card IMO,

If anyone is interested, my old Gigabyte G1 980Ti had a graphic score of 19,051 in Firestrike 1.1

You're joking, but the first thing I thought when I heard about the decision this morning is that I should quickly buy a 1080 because the prices might get worse due to the USD/EUR
rate.

I have a question ? I bought the 1080 and it has a slight coil wine issue. The sound is a very faint and you can't hear it unless you put your ear next to the cart and it only happens when I am in the game under a heavy load. The problem is I bought this card from A local import shop and the warranty is international. Is ir a concern ? If i cover my pc case i cant hear it. The ac should be off in the room with muted speakers and desktop cover is open to hear it. What do you guys suggest ?

Coil whine is only a concern if you're annoyed by it.
Considering it is apparently very subtle and only audible during heavy gaming (where your ears are probably covered by headphones or you're being blasted by speakers) I personally wouldn't make to much fuss about it - not until 1080s are more readily available anyway.

But just out of curiosity, which brand and model did you buy?

I always go with the Nvidia cards. I don't care if other cards are 1 % or 2% faster. I know some people suggest its crappy cooler but it never broke down on me since I have switched to Nvidia long time ago. The only other option I would consider is water cooling from EVGA. but that is usually more expensive and my budget doesn't allow me to go that much as I already passed my budget limit.

so coil whine wont affect the longevity of the card ? I don't want it to break down on me in few months because of stupid thing like this. I already was very close to sell an arm for this shit lol

What's a good memory overclock? I remember people saying that performance actually got worse after a certain point. Please give the number and not just the offset

Im running stable with a 5300MHZ memory clock

I'm probably gonna try to up it to 5400MHZ today. Overwatch is still by far the best stress test Ive used for stable OC's thus far.

Which seems to be the better card, the FTW or the Strix?

Whichever one you can get first really.

I went with the FTW for two reasons though,

1. ASUS raised the price of the strix after getting everyone hyped up about the card. Rubs me the wrong way. As a business owner myself I understand the mentality. I would never do this to my customers.

2. I like the look of the FTW better. This matters because when I built my PC I was going to go with a sleek non windowed case but there was a nice windowed case that was on sale for half off at that moment so I decided to get that and spend the extra dough on games and better case fans lol. I'm now pulled in to trying to make everything look good...

EDIT: Oh, and I totally forgot about EVGA's reported fantastic customer service. I have heard stories of them even RMAing people cards that are a step above what their previous card was free of charge. That actually seems to be a pretty common one.

I see
Maxing out voltage and power limit should be safe on these cards right? G1 Gigabyte if it matters

Agreed. I crashed enough times testing my 980 TI that Blizzard sent me a warning for quitting matches! I kid you not. When challenged they said they don't differentiate between a crasher and quitter, and I should test overclocks in training mode. Problem with this method is you can be stable for a couple of hours before crashing.

You'll know an excessive memory overclock as it will give the game a different colour hue or even loss of textures, but again, you might be playing for a while before it appears.

Ya, but I found that they didnt do anything to help OC the core/memory more. Still hit the same +75 offset limit on core.
Is there any point in not having those settings maxed out? I assume the GPU will only use the extra voltage if it's required? Or is it constantly using the extra power even if it doesn't need it?

This is 77 pages long, so apologies if my question has already been answered: have there been any reviews posted that include a discussion/comparison of fan noise for the non-Nvidia 1080s? I have zero interest in overclocking, I just want the quietest 1080 available. I'd ordinarily go with Evga, but the 680 Evga I have is insanely loud, so I want to go into my 1080 purchase fully informed.

Logically you want the cards with the biggest fans.

I am aware they are not released yet, but they should be coming eventually, but you might want to wait for the EVGA Classified series. They are wider cards and have bigger fans which mean they can have lower rpm = less noise for the same amount of airflow/cooling.

You can max it out without dmg to your GPU, though I dunno if it only uses the extra voltage if required.

Sorry if this has been asked, the thread has moved on quite a few pages since I was last in here. I'm not having much luck finding proper comparisons between the various cards, at least not a comprehensive one with a bunch of the lower/higher end ones.

How big of a difference is there between the likes of the dumb clown card and Aero versus the G1 Gaming and FTW cards? Is it really worth that premium? Where are the differences (temps, overclock-ability, power consumption)? As for sound, as long as it isn't louder than my Asus Strix 970, I'm fine with anything.
I'm wondering if the premium is really justifiable when the cost goes up quite a bit (plus the Aero is in stock now!)

My understanding is that coil whine is frequently present, but is usually at a high enough frequency that it's not within the range of human hearing. No, it won't hurt your card. It's not necessary to go looking for it if you can't hear it under normal usage scenarios.

Since performance in real world is pretty much the same across the board this the best bang for your buck TBH.

I'd say that's only true if you completely disregard noise. Otherwise, the cheapest model with a good cooler is probably the best bet. Around here, those seem to be the Palit/Gainward cards.

Thanks! I'm strongly considering Aero over it though at a slightly higher price because holy shit that thing makes me cringe and laugh everytime I see it. Plus the Aero is in stock now.

I had a look around at those since you mentioned them, looks like there is one Gainward card on Amazon Germany that's around the same price, otherwise I'm only seeing them nearing the same price as the FTW and G1. Is the noise difference with the cheaper options that big?

Assassins Creed Syndicate sure likes telling me that my overclock sucks. It was fine in Witcher 3 and GTA 5 but in AC I get weird graphical glitches that'll last like a second before vanishing. Distant geometry flickering in and out of existence seems to be the usual thing with this game. No purple artifacts though

Oh man bro, I was just kidding. I mean if you like the way that card looks then yeah, go for it lol. Although something is to be said for temps and noise. I know that the reference blower designs don't cool as well as non reference and are generally louder. Also something about thermal throttling but I think that was taken care of in a software patch. How much of a real world difference though I couldn't tell you without having experienced the sound myself as I haven't been in the PC world very long. Beginning of this year actually.

If I where you I would go for the cheapest non reference model that is in stock if you don't care about anything else.

This, they come with a really really decent cooler and are also among the cheaper cards. Most other custom cards cost quite a bit more (and probably don't offer much better cooling/overclocking).

Palit/Gainward on ebay goes for 700-719, for example: http://www.ebay.de/itm/8192MB-Palit...056182?hash=item488f5065f6:g:lc4AAOSwbYZXbGOt

Oh so these are using the reference blowers. I knew they looked alike, but the different colour threw me off (dumb as that sounds). Yeah having seen/heard them first hand, I think I'll just continue to hold off for one of the other cards.
Hardware is not my forte, for whatever reason graphics cards in particular just goes right over my head.

Didn't think of Ebay actually. This particular one doesn't ship to Ireland but I'll be sure to take a look.

I bought my new rig yesterday for the same reason as prices in the UK will go up, just give them time

Depends on how quickly the pound bounces back tbh. We've got the 5th biggest economy in the world (or will have again pretty soon), the main reason why the pound dropped down the toilet temporarily was because these supposed financial whizz kids ignored polls and backed the wrong horse.

It's going to take us at least 2 years to leave the European Union and once that time is over this country will no longer have our hands tied with regards to commercial deals with non-member states such as the US, China and Japan - which means in the long term PC prices and PC component prices will go down in a few years.

Leaving the European Union also isn't going to stop us from doing commercial deals with European Union member states. They need to buy our stuff and won't cut their noses off to spite their faces.

And after those two years have come and gone the UK will be saving around 18bn quid every year.

Northern Ireland have enough Loyalists to vote to win any Border referendum so they'll remain in the UK. The one country I do worry about is Scotland if they have another Independence referendum and they leave the UK to remain in the European Union. Now that the UK is leaving it's only a matter of time before other member states follow with their own referendums and once that happens the European Union will collapse and the Euro with it, which is going to be DISASTROUS for Scotland's economy. :Oo

Sorry, I went off on a tangent there lol, TLDR; the UK economy will be fine and in a few years we'll have the benefit of cheaper hardware due to us being able to have unrestricted commercial dealings with the States, Japan and China. :oD

Today I learned that 3DMark is useless as a way to test overclock stability
Everything was fine
Booted up Witcher 3 and I see purple artifacts in distant geometry
Huge waste of time only using 3DMark to test

I'm a total noob when it comes to overclocking but can't you run a game in window-mode while overclocking?

It's useful for finding your max stable OC though. But yeah, game stable obviously needs some further tweaking

I love my Titan X Hybrid. Really thinking all my future cards will have AIO water cooling.

Man I don't even know how much luck I'll need to grab a 1080TI hybrid in Europe. But yeah I'm going with AIO WC cards too, I need it to be silent.

Randomly walked into best buy today and they had 2 1080s in stock. 1 1070. I bought the 1070. FEs of course. Official nvidia packaging.
