Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

The next game from Sucker Punch will probably be shown at next year's E3. Infamous: Second Son was released in March 2014 and the DLC was released in August 2014. I'm guessing that their current project didn't start until January 2015. It's been about 18 months. Have to give them time. Besides, with The Last Guardian, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Detroit: Become Human, Days Gone and God of War IV all being released by the end of 2017, no reason to show their next game yet. Sony can give them the majority of time for their E3 conference next year like they did with Bend's Days Gone this year. Last year, it was Horizon, this year was Days Gone so next year can be the next game from Sucker Punch. Must admit that I like it when Sony gives extra time and focus on the other studios that they have.

I like how Sony reveals all of their 1st-Party games with gameplay rather than CGI/in-engine. When that camera panned to behind Kratos' back I was so happy.

Based on Sony Worldwide Studios president words:

A big focus of PSX is the show floor as well, since is an event open to the public. The presser is just a part of it, the most important for most sure, but PSX keynote is not like an E3 one
I know what he said, but they were blasted for it. I doubt we don't get a nice juicy surprise there. Like I said, I expect those games to be released in 2017 with two of them being Q4 2017-Q1 2018, so I expect them to show up once more.

They were blasted for it because there were expectations. Now that they've set it, PSX will be seen for what it is.

It's how games media critics always assume Sony will not announce anything of note at Gamescom/PGW/TGS, simply because of their bubble of "if it's not at E3 it's worthless"

It should be pretty clear by now that PSX is for smaller, niche, and fan-service announcements. The type of things that the hardcore PlayStation crowd may appreciate like vita games, ports of classics like Day of the Tentacle, indie barrages, localizations including some surprising ones, and maybe some updates on some of the bigger titles.

The real wild card in Sony's event schedule is Gamescom/PGW. Traditionally that conference focuses on smaller and mid-tier games and announcements. But last year in Paris they really brought it by announcing two AAA games, Gran Turismo and Detroit, along with announcements such as Driveclub Bikes and Matterfall. Also saw the debut of Uncharted 4 multiplayer. It was quite easily SIEE's most significant showing ever. Now that leaves us with no clue what to expect this year.

Ovosonico is a safe bet for GC/PSX. There's the new EuroIP.

And I am very excited to see more Matterfall, just in case it doesn't turn out to be a side scrolling game. I suspect it will be, but I can live in hope. And I know it'll still look cool even when it is.

Based on what? They had the PSX conference last year and got lambasted for it. The first one was better. Plus they got SFV announced there. In regards to U4, I'm expecting them to release it in November and probably announce during the Europe Game Show.

Sony announced MLB The Show 15, Kill Strain, Fat Princess Adventure, Wattam, What Remains of Edith Finch and Drawn to Death at the first PSX. Only one of those is a big game and it's a yearly franchise.

Outside of MLB The Show, PSX simply isn't where Sony announces their AAA games, only third parties do (SFV, Ace Combat, Ni no Kuni 2, Yakuza, etc). You're setting yourself up for disappoint if you're still in denial about this after last year's show.

Count me in PSX camp. I like more niche games and Japanese games rather than bombastic 3rd party games like CoD, Destiny
I prefer all types of games, and I can actually see Destiny 2 getting revealed/announced at PSX if development is on track for a Fall 2017 release.

Not really a first party announcement, but wasn't Sony supposed to announce that Kojima partnered up with them last PSX but Konami prevented them from doing so? That announcement alone would have made the conference so much better for me.

I enjoyed PSX in 2014, gave us our first look at Uncharted 4 gameplay. Last year's PSX was nice too, FF7R looked fantastic. Hoping we get to see some Spidey gameplay or more for GOW.

No. They really haven't.

The infamous games would have been infintely better if they were melee focused instead of trying to shoe in run and gun TPS mechanics.

There is no clearer example of this than first light. Punching bad guys up as fetch is far far more fun than shooting anything. Likewise delsins chain is far more satisfying than his shooting.

If the melee was fleshed out so more, you never needed to draw for the sparkling bolts

I don't even... The inFamous games were by far the best controlling/most satisfying TPS games to come out until MGS V and UC4. Melee combat is and has been pretty fucking shit in all of the games though. Still probably my favorite IP from Sony though.

Err it's not about announcing AAA games, it's showing the same games again.. you know like Uncharted 4 was shown, like Kojima's announcement was supposed to come out, SFV announced being a huge one (regardless of it being 1st or 3rd party, it's a massive AAA game), FFVIIR game being shown again, and MLB.

What about the new stuff like NNK2, Ace Combat , Rez, etc?

There's new stuff as well, and not insignificant ones. Just no first party stuff which some people like Colin Moriarty thinks needs to be at PSX.

NNK2 was PSX also? That was a massive game, I thought that was a E3 reveal? I'd love it if it was shown at PSX, I'd consider that a huge game to be reshown again as well. NNK was one of my favorite games last gen.

I put together a video highlighting upcoming games either from Sony's first party studios or ones being published by Sony, thought this might be worth posting in the thread. Hope you guys enjoy it.

There's so much diversity in these games, I love that about Sony and their in house projects.

The God of War Trailer now surpassed the Uncharted 4 E3 Reveal-Trailer in terms of Views...and that only in 2 weeks. Crazy

I completed The Order: 1886 recently. Probably the first game I completed in a year. And it's not a bad game at all. The story got more interesting the further in I got, though never being great. The gameplay mechanics were smooth, and I enjoyed going from cover to cover shooting up people. The half-breeds didn't work on a gameplay level, and man that ending. For me personally, it was way too long - I wish it had ended when
Galahad jumps from the bridge
but it didn't. Good game though.

Sucker Punch's new game is following iSS and iFL with realistic, scanned human characters and clothing.

Sucker Punch is looking for a seasoned character artist to join the character team for the next big adventure. With a strong focus on realistic human anatomy, facial likeness, and clothing, we are looking to step up our game!

  • Create highly-efficient, realistic next-gen characters
  • Be comfortable working with scan data
  • Strong human sculpting skills with an ability to create highly realistic facial likeness
  • Strong understanding of human and animal anatomy
  • Blend shape experience
The San Diego VASG already produce a lot of this character work but maybe SP want to bring more in-house to iterate and improve their lead characters quicker.

Eyes are the number one area I'd like to see Sucker Punch improve and they may have a more challenging open-world environment but Until Dawn is the quality level I'd like to see them match.

Outside the classic Neogaf bubble of hate for Kratos, GoW is a massive IP for Sony, traditionally more so than Uncharted so this isn't surprising.

Good to see none the less.

Maybe in U.S. but definitely not worldwide. UC2, UC3 have and UC4 will sell more than GOW3 did. This new GOW looks like it could rival any ND production to date so far though

Oh yeah GoW does have a strong impact on US markets in comparison to other Sony IP. Worldwide I think UC is just a much more palateble experience for most gamers too.

But weren't UC4 and GoW 3 quite close in numbers for their respective NPD debuts? I think the new GoW could outdo Uncharted globally if the quality bar is met.

Edit: but no MP throws a spanner into that prediction
>.<

Are some of the folks from Sumo Digital also working on WiLD? The guy second from right definitely helped demo LBP3 when it released.

Don't think it's been formally announced, but maybe. Wild Sheep studio is a very small team (I seem to recall them being about 12 people?) and I expect they outsource some stuff for the sake of efficiency.
