Civilization 6 announced, out October 21st

I don't see anything wrong with the graphics; looks better than civ 5 to me.

Yup!

It's ok. It's not the complete abomination that I thought it was, but I still don't love it.

Everything stands out so much better in the new game. With the V screenshot I find myself looking at the icons and not the map.

I love all of the leader animations. They all seem like over-the-top caricatures with lots of expressiveness and personality.

England confirmed by the way, leader is Victoria.

Unique Units
Sea Dog
Red coats

Unique District
Royal Navy Dockyard

Huh, interesting. Am I crazy, or does the US get more bonuses? Or was there a leader-specific thing I missed for England?

Even if they don't, they're gonna be CRAZY good at wrecking people abroad for the 25-50 turns Redcoats and Seadogs live at the top of the units.

Young Victoria is a new one. Looks good though, and I'm glad it's not just Lizzy again.

As I think of it actually, none of the Civ V leaders have stuck around so far.

Yes but shortly afterwards they will randomly break all treaties and alliances and self destruct for no apparent reason.

They also get an archaeologist/museum bonus

Yeah, but US gets:

-Founding Fathers (increased government legacy gains or something idk)
-Film Studio
-Rough Riders
-P51
-Tourism bonus from National Parks

So that's 5 to 4. Might be that they're just not bothering to match the numbers?

Art imitates life!

Okay so two things that are very interesting to me here:

1. The Sea Dog does a ranged attack, but it can also capture enemy ships? The latter ability was not explicitly shown, so I've no idea if it has to be at melee range to do so, but a ranged Privateer still sounds pretty dang awesome.

2. So is there no more zone of control? While it's true that the Red Coats spend only 1 move to disembark, it was doing so within what used to be the ZoC of the enemy unit, and I'm pretty sure that still would trigger ZoC in Civ5.

I like that the English still get to keep their naval movement bonus with the Royal Navy Dockyard. +1 move isn't as sweet as +2, but at least the RND gives a bunch of other bonuses.

I like that they're making the unique units really unique. A lot of Civ V uniques felt basically identical to their conventional versions, just with bigger numbers.

Is it just me or do the graphics actually looks worse than Civ V?

It's a totally different art style, much cleaner. The map had way more textures and details on it in 5.

I prefer the visuals of 5, but I think I can live with that if the game delivers ;)

Civ 6:

I think 6 looks like a game that may run on an ipad pro. Don't know about the cpu-power needed for the AI, but for the graphics it should be good enough.

yes. it's purely a gameplay decision and it's entirely coincidental that this revolting over-saturated bulbous cartoon look is completely en vogue thanks to clash of clans and its ilk.

I think it's closer to the look of Civilisation Revolution...

No it's not just you, the graphics in Civ6 do look less detailed than they did in Civ5. However, I will admit that I often had problems with clutter in Civ5 due to too much detail, so I can see why they went this route in Civ6, and I think I'll probably like the new look better once I start playing it. For me the graphical change is okay. The gameplay changes though look incredibly better in 6 compared to 5, and to me that's much more important than a slightly different look to the game.

To be fair, I don't really get the negativity around the art style. I find the change quite jarring and all, but I never quite saw Civ as a game I'd play for the graphics. Sure, great graphics make navigating the world much more fun, but I could go mod Skyrim if I wanted that. I'm here for the gameplay, and unstacked cities is such an interesting concept for me already that I can't wait to know more about the other changes and how they play out in the long run.

Also, the art style grew on me so lol.

I like the art style but the only thing that bothers me visually is the density of the forests. I wish the forests didn't look so sparse.

Really liking what I've seen so far. Hopefully we get some really weird Civs like Venice (they're one of my favourites). Continents being so strongly differentiated is a great QoL gameplay improvement, alongside things like coastal cliffs.

I like the graphics though I wish they got rid of, or changed the firework effect when units hit each other, also Elizabeth looks too plasticy.

Im hoping it will be an easy mod to change the hit animations. Surprisingly the animation is absent in the bombardment attack in the england video.

I don't have a problem with the leaders' appearances (even if TR is a bit corpulent). But then the visuals don't matter all that much to me, beyond the interface. I am a little sad that the leaders' civ-specific "throne rooms" have been reduced to a painted backdrop.

It's cheaper to make leader scenes without the background, so it'll be easier for them to introduce new leaders in the future. I'll take that as a compromise.

Yeah, Civ is all about the game play to me. I don't care much about the graphics. I would probably still play Civ 5 even if I had to keep it in Strategic View the whole time haha

I really miss the customizable throne rooms from Civ 2 :(

I think they did mention that military engineers show up later in the game for custom roads, but yes initial roads are built by traders.

I'm curious if this means that the districts' starting bonuses are all going to be fairly mediocre, given that they can be built instantly for no monetary cost.

Very interesting. My OCD clean line syndrome when it comes to my empire is going to be driving me nuts no doubt.

I wonder if something like a national wonder for "the interstate project" will give you late game major custom roads or something.

My concern is a little different. Sometimes my enemies are really far away, or in dense terrain, or my units have to cross over rivers. In the interest of making the military campaign not take a million years, I like being able to build roads into enemy territory and over rivers in order to get my units moving. The inability to build roads early on does mean early military campaigns are potentially going to be very very annoying :(

Gameplay is number one for me too when it comes to Civ but that doesn't make the graphic design unimportant.

I thought the design was really really good in Civ 5 which added to the overall experience.

I will still buy and play the shit out of Civ6, but I'd be lying if I said the visuals didn't hamper the experience somewhat, even if it isn't the most important thing.

I hope the new art style will be more functional than V at least, I usually just played with civ V strategic view because the regular view did not give me enough information.

When civ V came out the launch hardware requirements were actually steeper than at previous releases, I remember it running poorly and being in the way of the actual gameplay.
