Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

I ran a bunch of benchmarks on my ASUS Strix GTX 1080 this weekend, thing is a beast. Beat a lot of my 980 SLI scores.

You owe it to yourself to upgrade to 3440x1440 with the 1080 when you can. It's where the card truly shines (I'll never go back to 1080p) and its the best upgrade you can possibly make (outside of going with a Vive instead).

I really can't see the difference, 1080p has been really a sweetspot for me. I have a 2560x1440 monitor too and even on that it just doesn't seem to help all that much. I love that I can turn the sliders all the way to max and not worry if the FPS is going to dip.

I really don't like the whole push for 4k when a lot of hardware can't even get 1080p right.

I don't like 4k either. 3440x1440 is 2K. I prefer ultra wide screen 21:9 aspect ratio because you get to see more of your game on both sides (which is more important to me as it's more immersive). It's also 70% more pixels than 1080p, so I've found I don't need to run AA as much (thus I can still max out all my games well past 60fps) check out my imgur album for examples of what I mean. http://imgur.com/a/9SDi8

Don't you have a PCI-express x1 slot above your main X16 ?

Anyway, you could move your card to other X16 slot and put your soundcard above where your GPU currently sits.

Why can't you use PCI slot 3 instead?

Use the x1 slot.

x16 #3 is usually shared with #1 so if you put anything into #3, #1 will work as an x8 slot.

Latest rumors are pointing to Gamescom announce.

It's a PCI slot, not PCI-e. He can't use any slot except the one PCI slot on the motherboard for the sound card.

Hey, has anyone had an issue with Firestrike where the benchmark stops and it says "Test run cancelled by user". I checked their faqs page and it only says it happens when you press escape, which I did not. Happens everytime I run Firestrike.

*I also upgraded after it happen a few times and I'm still getting it.

Did you get an email or contact customer service? I am dying here. Need.

Contacted customer service yesterday got an email that basically said "if you don't like the wait cancel the order" but today got the automated email giving me the delivery date.

Nothing is better than sheer pixel density when it comes to IQ. Should you happen to have a display which can show it, you can watch a demonstration.

Yes, you do need to set the 4K video to 2x playback speed. There is no other workaround at this time because YouTube does not allow uploading of 4K/60 videos at this time.

If you still can't see the difference, you might actually be blind.

Well that sounds positive then. Thanks for the info. Going to be staring at my inbox like an idiot now though.

This means it crashed during the run. Lower your overclock and try again.

That's what I figured. Looks like I lost the silicon lottery because my Strix OC is crashed at stock OC clocks. I've had 0 issues in games, but Firestrike is doing that every time.

I literally can't get it to complete at all. Not sure what's up with it. Power limit at 110 and nothing OC'd and it still doesn't finish. I just unistalled/reinstalled graphics drivers.

I don't care how much the Titan P costs. I'm there day one baby!

I would love an August release. Much earlier than I expected.

Pascal Titan/1080 Ti arriving in August. 50% more powerful than GTX 1080.

250W TDP.

Should blow away 1080s. But cost an arm and a leg
But... why?

They will probably still have people desperately trying to get their hands on 1080s at that point. I mean, why not. I think I might be able to convince myself to use EVGA step-up if it's included and provides another 50% performance boost over the 1080 but... I don't see a reason why they'd compete with themselves even if it's a prestige card.

Gamescom sounds like a pretty weird time to announce this as well. I remain sceptical about this rumor.

This is why I find it hard to believe. They have to know the people crazy enough to buy a Titan are crazy enough to be trying to buy 1080s right now with the intentions of upgrading to a Titan later. You'd think they'd want everyone to upgrade to 1080s before the next beast is out.

Yeah there's no justification for this part until AMD provides competition.

So the only way I can get Firestrike to finish is to set the Power Limit to 100% and everything else at 0. The OC settings in the Strix software fail everytime.

Mbo advice please. See my setup below. Currently using a 980 Ti. The PCI expansion slot directly under it is used for my Xonar DG soundcard (removed for the picture).

Given most 1080s are even larger than the 980 Ti, how fucked am I and what are my options? I really don't want to give up my Xonar.

Going by that picture, and if you have to use that slot, you're going to have to use a 1080 with a blower.

I still have my second 980 ti FTW here waiting for the step up to go through and side by side with the 1080 FE they are the same size, so if that's a 980 ti in your rig you will have no problem using a blower card. These third party cards with the massive coolers will an issue, though.

The EVGA ACX cards seem to also be slimmer than most of these other cards as well, but I don't have mine yet so I can't compare the size to the FE. Maybe someone else can shed some light?

VR, my friend. All the wallets for VR.

The existing 1080 seems like it would be more than enough horsepower for VR. You can wait 18 months and buy the successor to this 1080 and still be money ahead by the time the VR headsets everybody wants roll around.

I get the excitement about buying super premium equipment, but at some point you're just chasing the dragon in an electronics sense.

I don't know about VR, but I'm chasing the 4k dragon and need every bit of juice I can get. There's always something new and better coming, especially if you're dealing with timelines as long as 18 months. The right time to buy is when you want to and can afford it.

Isn't everyone posting in a 1080 thread chasing dragons? Let's keep our audience in perspective here.

Bingo. Enjoy if you can buy.

I think the right time for 4K will be NVidia's next pipeline redesign that is focused on DX12, HBM2, and further thermal efficiency improvements. The 1080 is an impressive beast, but it feels like the last great charge for 2k gaming.

From cost/benefit standpoint, I just don't see the value yet. I hope things move faster than I think they will.

Stop using the bug ridden ASUS software and switch to MSI Afterburner.

Tried that too, same result. If it's OCd or the power target is increased it crashes out in Firestrike. It's the exact opposite of the EVGA I had before it, which I could OC like crazy in the benches but crashed in game. This is having no issues so far gaming, but crashes in benchmarks.
