Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

There's no way a 1080 in my case won't be a size problem. Fuck.

I'm actually concerned it's not viable due to my sound card.

Hm.. pondering. What effect does a low-capacity power supply have on a card and/or its performance?

I had a decent power supply when I first got my GTX-680, but it died and I replaced it with a lower-capacity model from Best Buy. I can't remember what it is (maybe 400 or 450.. definitely less than 500W), but it was a good 100-150W less than the one it replaced. It doesn't seem to cause any problems with my 680, and I think the 1080 might actually have less power draw? I'm considering buying a power supply along with the 1080 whenever the damn thing gets in stock. I'm aiming for the FTW, although I don't intend on doing much overclocking.

Your PC will simply turn off in case of insufficient power supply to the videocard. There's no effect on performance or anything else really. Depending on if you will be on the edge or over it the PC may be unstable under load (running some games while turning off and rebooting in others) or simply turning off immediately after any 3D app start. Depending on the PSU model and the rest of your system you may be fine with a 400-450W one.

Ok, so as some of you know, I had an EVGA SC for a while and was having temp issues between that and my case. I was having temps crawl up to 78C-80C while playing Doom and a few other demanding titles over long sessions. I ordered some Corsair SP fans for the case, but temps would level out around 76C (65% fan speed). With a max OC clocks fluctuated between 2025-2050. At this point I decided to sell the SC and wait for a hybrid option.

In comes the Strix. I just happen to have the opportunity to buy one, and since I am impatient, I did. The quality of the packaging and the card is pretty great. The EVGA SC was cool, but it didn't have the wow factor for me that the Strix did. The cooling assembly on the Strix is incredible. It feels like a supreme quality product as you take it out of the box (it's ginormous too). Easily, the out of the box and overall aesthetics goes to the Strix.

Now to temps in game. I'm just going to compare on Doom, since that is where I spent most of my time with the SC. Temps were unbelievable!! I was using the stock OC setting. Clocks completely stable at 2025 and temps at 62C!! The highest I ever saw it hit was 63C but only for a split second. Fan speed at 59%. I was in such disbelief that I just kept playing and playing. I thought at some point those temps would crawl up, but they never did. Unreal

Seriously, this card blows the EVGA card and cooler away. I was worried about giving up that EVGA customer service, but this card is soooo good. I'm much happier spending the 700 with this than I was with the SC. I will keep testing temps if whatever anyone is curious about.

Yeah no surprises there. More fans. More heatpipes. The Asus is just a far better cooler.

I'm almost tempted to swap my Gigabyte 1070 for the Asus since the Gigabyte cooler is pretty poor.

Is that what that was.. lol. I was tinkering with OC on my CPU a couple weeks ago, and it would hard-reboot under anything with heavy load on both CPU and GPU (I was benchmarking Crysis 3 and it lasted about thirty seconds). So yeah... new PS incoming, I think. I'm eyeballing a Corsair 750W on Newegg.

I got myself one of those Palit Gamerock which will (supposedly) arrive tomorrow.

Time to put my trusty Gtx970 to rest.

So, I got this card from someone who got it last week and it ended up being too massive for his case (he's trustworthy), it was cheaper than getting a new one but I didn't do any research on this edition, is it a good one? I only wanted a 1080 and a cheap one (less than €700), don't care about Ocing (I always run stock), is it a good purchase?

Thans for your assistance GAF

P.S. Thanks Durante!

If you game at 1080p only is it worth jumping from a 980ti to this? Most benchmarks out there are 1440p and 4k so im interested on some input from someone that's gaming at that res and made the jump

I dont think anyone else can answer to this than you.

That being said, I wouldn't trade EVGA support for ASUS. If you've reached your maximum overclock at a reasonable temp and noise level, the rest is pointless. Everything else equal, lowering temps is great, but everything else isn't equal.

Yea I guess. Seeing how unstable the clocks were on the SC, combined with the temps, I was pretty meh about it. I know the warranty is killer though. I just wasn't pleased with the performance, especially compared to what I was hearing about the Strix. It still blew away expectations. To get that high of stable clocks out of the box at 62C is amazing. That's more than 14C difference in temps with nearly the same clock locked in.

The OC settings out of the box:
110% Power Target
83 Temp Target
GPU Clock +38

I'm curious to OC further and see what happens, but I'm not sure I will because I love what I'm getting now.

I want a 1080, but I don't even have a PC. So I'd have to build one but I wouldn't know how or where to start.

Oh well :(

People keep raving about EVGA but of all the cards I've owned in my lifetime, only an EVGA died out on me after 6 months of ownership, replacement came in about a week but I had to pay 90 euros to ship it to Germany as they don't have any centers in France and the card that I got back got a worse ASIC then the original one.
Their lifetime warranty or other benefits like them shipping a card available to you when yours is dead weren't available for me. My card died when the 1080's were just around the corner and they wouldn't accept me paying the difference of price to get a bump up although now I quite understand their pov seeing as they have no cards at all for my country.

All in all I'd rather go with Asus which as never let me down in terms of performance and quality. The 970's were quite noisy when you ramped up the fans but then again so does this 980Ti SC+

Tnx, I am going to give this a look. Will something work from scratch for around 2000 euros? I am not willing to spend much more than that...

Edit;

Never mind, this is never going to work out for me. Far too complicated. I admire you guys, and stick to my consoles. What a shame.

It's really pretty simple. It's plug and play. Easier than legos. Just find a clear, slow video, and required parts list. There's a PC build thread on GAF that will help with whatever you need.

I'm still waiting on a strix which i ordered on May 29th (UK)!

Are these 1080 cards significantly bigger than aftermarket 980ti's? I have a MSI Twin Frozr at the moment which is big but comfortably fits in my midi case. Bit worried the strix won't fit!

Edit: ^ might have answered my question

I didn't know just how ridiculously big some of these aftermarket cards were in comparison to the Founder's Edition. No wonder these cool so darn well. I guess the FE's cooling isn't too bad considering the size and the fact that it's a blower.

veBidjG.jpg

On other news, still waiting for my card. Last ETA didn't pan out. I'm waiting to know just how long I have to wait -_-

Size of the cards is one of reasons I chose FE. The main reason was I wanted blower cooler because I went SLI. Though I also think the green GEFORCE GTX looks cool as well..... I was pleasantly surprised the fans arent too loud even at 80%

I've had two EVGA cards, a 780 and a 780Ti. Neither overclocked for shit, which in hindsight I should have expected given how many variants of a particular card they sell. Unless you get the Kingpin, you're dealing with pretty severely binned cards.

The 780 actually shit the bed after two months, and the vaunted warranty netted me a clearly previously owned card with a worse ASIC score. I've since had much better experiences with Asus, Gigabyte, and MSI.

MSI 1080 Gaming Z showing up on UK sites with a boost of 1911mhz, underwhelming. I wonder how much they will price these at in the US.

I built my first gaming PC last year. It is daunting at first when it's all new to you. You literally just have to take it one step at a time, find some good instructions, use a website like PCpartPicker to budget and ensure compatibility. And if you're unsure of what parts to pick, build something really cheap (for practice) from a build list like http://www.gamersnexus.net/pc-builds where they explain why they pick each item to help you understand. Then sell it, and build one for yourself. Once you do it you'll never go back to consoles for 3rd party games.

I think you got a bad card. My card runs the same frequencies but runs the same temps as your STRIX. Probably best you sold it. I imagine the time to RMA the thing would have been ridiculous. How much were you able to sell the SC for?.

Maybe, not really sure what the reason is really. I haven't seen any reviewers review both cards to compare. I do know that every review I've seen has the Strix a few C lower than the other cards.

I ended up getting what I paid for it. I sold it about a week ago.

Cool. I'm glad u got a badass card. Nothing feels better then slamming games at cool temps. I still have an ASUS Strix 970 which I liked a lot. I had planned on staying with ASUS but I just didn't have the willpower to wait until one became available.

Yea, the goal was to go hybrid, but I was impatient and the reviews were looking good on the Strix. I just can't believe what a significant jump in cooling it has.

Sod it. Have changed my mind again lol. Am now going to get a Zotac Amp Extreme instead of a Zotac Amp. Amazon UK have them for £621.78, the cheapest I've seen them at. They're out of stock but I won't be able to afford one until next month anyway so hopefully there will be plenty floating around by then.

Worth getting for the memory overclock out of the box imo, 10.8MHz.

This worries me. Are all of the overmarket cards oversized (ie. 2.5 slots) instead of 2? I'm very close to buying a 1080 next month or so after SIGGRAPH, but an oversized card won't fit on my motherboard as I have something in the next slot.

What do you have in the next slot?

If you are blocking the adjacent slot with another card, you should get an FE because those pull air from the front of the card and exhaust it out the back of your case. With a card blocking the space below the card, aftermarket coolers with axial fans will attempt to pull air from the below the card and you're blocking the airflow with another card there.

Not all of them are that wide. The EVGA cards are only 2x width. The FE is actually slightly narrower, as you can see in that picture. Most of the ones I've seen only go as far as the edge of the bracket. Those two manufacturers just didn't seem to give a shit.. hehe.

Worth noting that both the Palit and Gainward cards are unavailable in the US. It's not a stock thing, either, they literally aren't sold here at all.

I don't care about the FTW pre-order anymore. I will look if I can get he Gainward or palit card (I don't remember the brands lol) early. I found a pre-order on Overclockers website, but I am not sure if it will arrive before the FTW.

As for the dimensions:

My current GTX 780 FTW :
Height: 4.376in - 111.15mm
Length: 10.5in - 266.7mm

Gainward Phoenix:

Board: 292mm(L)x112mm(W)

Edit: LOL they are in transit and will start shipping next week for Amazon; this isn't the first time I've heard that. Actually, I pre-order on like the second batch of pre-orders after the first one got locked; I doubt I will get it next week. I am looking at the Gainward retailers right now; the Gainward looks very tempting with its cooler and OC potential.

I have my WiFi card in the next slot. It doesn't sit flush next to the fan of my current card, so it's not blocking the fan... it's also a dual blower and I have five fans in my case (200mm and 4x120mm), so I'm doing pretty good I think. Never exceeded 65-67C on this card at sustained full loads.

Oh that's good to know. I typically go with EVGA but people have been telling me that MSI is a good choice too.

edit: Getting a 1080 next month is also contingent on me successfully removing my current video card, as I'm rather confused as to how the latch on this motherboard actually works.

Ah. If it's a small card like that you should be OK. Blocking a video card with another video card is a party foul though and should be avoided.

OH MY GOD

FUCK THOSE PCI-E SLOT LATCHES

SERIOUSLY, FUCK THEM

I FUCKING HATE SWITCHING OUT VIDEO CARDS AFTER THEY ADDED THOSE FUCKING LATCHES

WHO'S WITH ME?!

I'm with you on that. I forgot about the bloody latch when trying to remove my old 4870. Hopefully I haven't done the slot any damage. :o/

Might try putting my 4870 in again just to make sure.

My old Ivy Bridge motherboard was a pain in the ass. I think I still have scars on my thumb from the damn thing. My new Z170 ones is so much easier to remove. Both Asus. Maybe they improved it in newer motherboards. But yeah, fuck those latches.

According to nowinstock, amazon just sold some MSI Gaming Xs. Wonder if that means they finally got a clue as to when they'll be getting some. I should probably cancel my order of two. New Egg hasn't shipped my Zotacs 'cause of the holiday weekend, but I think it seems clear at this point they're going to be coming through. I don't need four of these.

The maximum stable over clock I can get with my MSI Sea Hawk EK X is 2075MHz @ 1.063V. Highest temp during over clock and Doom is 42C.

If anyone can get over that frequency during FireStrike, please let me know.
