Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

So in preparation for release, we've completely overhauled the website. Go check it out here!

For those of you attending this year's EGX Rezzed in London, you'll be able to play an early build of Starbound running on Xbox One! We'll later be launching on their Game Preview program.

One thing for certain, no ocean planets or poison planets for my next homeworld. Dealing with water drainage is a pain. So I'm probably gonna go asteroid belt.

A wooden/tree space station in space!!!
I know the feeling, my colony is on a ocean planet and its a pain in the ass to manage.

Although I have setup a lot of automation now with airlocks and stuff so I dont have to clean up myself now.

Still no date for 1.0 right? This thread came up and I started playing again, but don't want to go too far and have my world wiped. Worlds will be wiped with the update, right?

I had crazy automation on my ocean world. Tons of drains. An ocean plug if i wanted to flood the core. Airlocks and whatnot. And the place rained way too much. But I need some simplicity for a change.

Probably go with a Floran styled space station.

I've been looking for a casual time sink to play a few hours every once in a while... what is taking them so long to get to the finish line.

Me and Horse Detective started dating right when this thing started rolling. We hit 3 years this October and this game still isn't finished...

Such a bummer considering we absolutely adored burning hours into explorations. We stopped playing because our characters kept getting deleted and restarting felt rather frustrating considering we knew it would just happen again. :/

The good news is, the character / universe wipes are over and restarting the game is actually a good idea (there's a whole new intro and depending on how long it's been, a quest hub and such).

If this is the case, I'll start it up again today. It was always so frustrating to find all this cool loot and then have it all disappear over n over :(

I'd wait for the 1.0 release when everything is squared away. The new intro isn't live yet (I keep forgetting it's nightly-only, sorry about that), but the Outpost and stuff are.

Is this coming to PS4?

Its been a while, but I believe we were told it was suppose to come to the PS4. But only after they release 1.0 (they wanted to actually release the game before they started work on console versions of any sort)

Then I don't exactly remember when, butwhen MS announced that they were doing the Early Access/Beta thing on the XBone, it was mentioned that Starbound was part of it. So it looks like XBone is getting it first, and we don't know what the status of the PS4 version is.

That is amazing, I never thought this was coming to XB1. I even purchased it on PC because I didn't think it would. Nice to see you guys changed your mind on PC/Playstation only.

With Terraria 1.3.1 adding controller support, I'm hoping Starbound will have additional incentive to tack it on. Really can't stand gaming with a mouse after using it all day at work.

The part I'm sure everyone is curious about;

"This isn't a promise, anything could come up and we're just going to keep polishing it until it's ready. But internally we're aiming for any time before the end of July.

Obviously we're pretty terrible at predicting dates."

Getting closer, then.

Is Controller Support in the pipeline for 1.0? I looked through a lot of the recent blog posts and through the steam pages but haven't found any mention of it.

From yesterday's AMA:

Starbound will have full controller support but we need to redo the GUI to work with it. So it won't be in for 1.0. We will likely be bringing controller support from console to PC. (source)

Thanks guys.

The impressive / insane / annoying part is that I picked an ocean planet for this build as I didn't want to have to put background tiles to retain the water for my lake or keep filling water for the tunnels that lead under the entire island. So all of the landmass has to be built from scratch too (since ocean planets are mostly just floating sand islands). I've been building deep enough that you can't see the light shine from underneath unless you're super zoomed out.

Need to finish the port area (it's a mess) and the towers around that, clean up some of the vines in the semi-walled section (too repetitive), finish the tower near the garden with the pink trees, finish the city up on the brick tower, start on the palace on the second tower (it's much thinner than the city one), get more trees on the cliffs outside the graveyard and then build a proper temple up there with lots of catacombs stretching down into the sea caves. Then build further right of the thinner tower; I have a plan for a small defensive structure, a moat, then a large forested area and then some farms / a village... Not sure what to do after that, maybe drop it down back into the ocean. I'd like to be able to create an aqueduct / lock system to move boats up from sea level, but there's no way to pump water to pull it off. Maybe in 1.0.

After that, who knows. Planet is pretty big though, so lots of space. I had kind of planned for this to be a 'home base' of sorts (thus, the area for storage and village for NPCs).

oh my.

copy your universe, and send me the coords. i need to explore

I may have a problem...

I've been saying this for YEARS.

There's not much outside of what I've shown in screenshots, honestly. When 1.0 hits I'll probably send a copy to HaRyu for the GAF server.

Retro doesn't actually need to save his entire universe, he just needs to figure out which planet file it is, and just back that one up. We've done this before, because he needed his planet from the GAF server once, so I found the planet file, and dumped it in Dropbox for him.

Now that I think of it, might set up a little Dropbox repository for us to dump our planets into. (Unless the game's internals have changed so much, that we can't actually save/replace/delete individual planets from the universe anymore)

I may have a problem...

Stunning as always. Regarding the bit about building on an ocean world, it would be great if planets could have different backgrounds in different places/biomes (so the ocean of a world has an ocean background), although it's probably not a realistic goal considering how they would have to transition into each other.
