Christ, what an awful development and a terrible loss for five families whose loved ones died for doing the right thing. Especially horrible that some will capitalize on the loss of these five officers to undermine the credibility of current and future BLM protests.

If there's a silver lining to this news, it's that last night marked a time where protesters and police officers were genuinely respectful and supportive of one another. I can only hope we see more of that going forward and avoid any more tragic shootings among black Americans and police officers alike.

Just heard this on the news, RIP to the fallen officers.

Presenter said this was a formulated attack on the police, also said they caught one of the guys.

Any news on why they attacked, or anyone who took responsibility yet?

3 suspects are in custody. One is confirmed by Dallas Mayor to be a female afro american.

Very sad. A peaceful protest turns into this nightmare. I feel scared that I am raising two kids in this fucked up world. The violence never ends.

can someone link me to a timeline of the events?
this has been a tragic week for the US

Ah thanks, noticed there are no names though...

A bit unsual isnt it?

They're probably still trying to make sure they are the right suspects. One of the suspects the Dallas PD twitter was talking about ended up being completely innocent.

CBSN reporting that the police finished sweeping downtown for bombs and they found none so that's over with, thankfully.

When I went to bed last night we still had no idea who the attackers were and one of them was still in negotiations with the police and making bomb threats. Can anyone update me on what happened since then?

Not especially. They were still engaged with one of the suspects until late last night. We'll probably hear something by this afternoon.

Most certainly to not escalate things further while investigations and interrogations procede. This can turn even worse if authorities mishandle the communication through the next days

Hey America, want to actually try and implement some sane gun regulations yet?
How many people need to die to gun violence?

Sadly stuff like this is probably gonna have more motivation to push reform than random civilian deaths.

Are sniper rifles easy to acquire in the US?

Guns aren't really classified as "sniper rifles". Almost any rifle can be used for sniping. Sniping or a sniper are simply words related to how a shooting is done.

Its sad day when ever innocent life is lost, its even sadder when people are happy about it. America is falling apart, and if we don't fix it we are going to have a full on race war

Reports are the shooter killed himself in standoff, arrested a female suspect and no bombs were found after a sweep of the area.

Dude I saw this, you quoted the whole post initially and then realized they sounded too human and distressed in the rest of it, so you edited it down? smh.

They said "for EVERYONE involved." Why are you dogging on this person going through a tough time, trying to cope right along with everyone else?

I pared it down because the rest had nothing to do with the first half. So "smh" yourself.

I assumed that the actual incident itself speaks volumes about the tragedy of the victim, and I do apologize for the apparent omission. And yes, working in law enforcement, believing and admiring the role of law enforcement in free society makes me pay attention to the officer's situation as well as the citizens and victims involved in police interactions. I have a duty to acknowledge all levels of the interaction in order to perform my duty better.

I have been in law enforcement for just a few days over a year and I have been Black Lives Matter sympathetic since before beginning my law enforcement career. I fully disclose that I have not been aware of the plight of black people interacting with law enforcement for my entire life. I have not been involved in law enforcement for very long.

You are welcome to question the extent of my empathy. You are right to highlight the omission here -- but I truly felt it was obvious in just acknowledging the situation at all that the core of the tragedy is the victim involved, and it is my open mistake that I did not explicitly mention that. The victim's suffering and eventual passing is absolutely the most horrific element of the incident. If I must state it late and with less than the ideal level of tact, then I absolutely extend my empathy to the victim and his surviving loved ones.

But yes, I do pay attention to the way it has affected the officer. I have an interest in that aspect. I extend my pity and empathy to his levels of stress as he realizes the gravity of his actions, as he witnesses the passing of another human being and the suffering of that victim's girlfriend, even under suspicion that his actions were motivated by unreasonable fear and hatred -- racism. His shortcomings as a human being that resulted in that victim's death are just as interesting to me as the fact of the death itself. I believe that acknowledgment helps me grow to be a stronger and more effective member of law enforcement.

I am not in this career to exert authority or high-and-mighty moralism. I believe in the core "serve & protect" ethos.

You may question my dedication to that. I will just keep trying to prove your assumptions wrong.

Thanks for the clarification, and I respect everything you just said here.

We don't have the leadership or the culture to fix this kind of deep wound.

I mean it depends on what the definition of "sniper rifle" is. But yeah. Any simple deer hunting rifle like a .30/06 or something is easily obtainable. Put a high power scope on it and there ya go

Tabloid source on twitter, courtesy of a CNN source, saying white nationalists trying to start a race war, which is what I thought. The way that guy killed the cop just says military trained white guy to me.

Just FYI, if the suspects end up being African American you can kiss BLM goodbye. It's going to be labeled a terrorist organization and denigrated by those in power.

We already have confirmation from the Dallas mayor that one of the suspects was a black woman.

This is same kind of lazy thinking that breeds bigotry.

Don't become that which you hate.

I wouldn't listen to any of that garbage until the press conference. Tabloid source via Twitter via CNN sounds like the worst version of the telephone game imaginable.

I have a sickening inclination to agree because I'm feeling extremely cynical as a result of the three incidents over the past few days. I am hoping that we're all desperately trying to prevent the dialogue from reaching that end, though. Black Lives Matter is needed now more than ever.

Statistically, yes, but it seems disingenuous to act like there is nothing to feel scared about in a country where mass shootings are a fact of daily life.

Agreed. I've got a six month old baby girl, and it feels like every month is a stark reminder how she needs to be protected first and foremost. I always say that I'd give my life for her, and I'm being convinced by the reality that I ma just have to do that one day.

Honestly at this point, I'm convinced that no matter what race they are the movement for the time being is finished. People will spend years using this to shout down anybody who has anything to say about Police violence.
