Anchor on CNN just asked a witness to describe the shooter on-air. Trust me, the second they know (or think they know), they'll throw it out there.

This is a rather common argument, that our police forces aren't protected enough or something, when in reality unless these officers were prepped to be in a god damn firefight with a long rifle, nothing would have protected them. Last I saw he was seen in a video recorded right as shots started. He was as shocked as everybody else.

His brother was interviewed later on and told reporters that the guy in camo that was in all the pictures, his brother, immediately went over to an officer and turned over his gun and then went home.

Completely uninvolved. People used news footage and twitter to exonerate him. In the end, they managed to create a timeline of basically all his actions as the shooting occurred, including footage of him not firing his guns as the shooting started.

Last I saw he was seen in a video recorded right as shots started. He was as shocked as everybody else.

I work in American law enforcement (not an officer, though) and this has been a tremendously hard few days for us.

I barely got enough sleep after hearing and seeing the officer-involved shootings -- disturbing for the race implications and for the clearly shaken officers in the traffic stop incident (just absolutely tragic and traumatic for everyone involved), went to work this evening and heard about Dallas and it is extremely heart wrenching.

Why are you more concerned with the trauma experienced by the officers at traffic stops than the murder victims? Whatever goodwill you had with this post is completely erased with this glaring omission. Are you too blind to see the mistake you just made, and as part of law enforcement, no less? Good lord, dude.

The way I read his post is that the shootings were disturbing because of race implications, and disturbing because of how shaken the cop was. I.E. the cop's cowardly actions and demeanor were disturbing. Not that the poster felt sympathy for the cop.

I don't live in fear of any man, and neither should you.

If you really think the situation we live in America isn't much better than the average Nigerian then you are simply being disingenuous, or the experience you had in Nigeria was shaped by being a rich American who probably had a lighter skin tone to grant you privilege from the average person.

The life expectancy in Nigeria, even today, is in the early 50's. The average person has worse healthcare, makes much less compared to the average African American, and these are objective facts both governments provide.

When the rolling blackouts start to happen you wake up and watch the windows because you don't know if someone is going to try to loot you tonight. You don't know shit about how me and mine lived fam.

I'm watching the news and I'm seeing the same violence I saw in my time there. Yes, it is better, but it's not that much better when we still have people killing each other in the street in broad daylight.

I assumed that the actual incident itself speaks volumes about the tragedy of the victim, and I do apologize for the apparent omission. And yes, working in law enforcement, believing and admiring the role of law enforcement in free society makes me pay attention to the officer's situation as well as the citizens and victims involved in police interactions. I have a duty to acknowledge all levels of the interaction in order to perform my duty better.

I have been in law enforcement for just a few days over a year and I have been Black Lives Matter sympathetic since before beginning my law enforcement career. I fully disclose that I have not been aware of the plight of black people interacting with law enforcement for my entire life. I have not been involved in law enforcement for very long.

You are welcome to question the extent of my empathy. You are right to highlight the omission here -- but I truly felt it was obvious in just acknowledging the situation at all that the core of the tragedy is the victim involved, and it is my open mistake that I did not explicitly mention that. The victim's suffering and eventual passing is absolutely the most horrific element of the incident. If I must state it late and with less than the ideal level of tact, then I absolutely extend my empathy to the victim and his surviving loved ones.

But yes, I do pay attention to the way it has affected the officer. I have an interest in that aspect. I extend my pity and empathy to his levels of stress as he realizes the gravity of his actions, as he witnesses the passing of another human being and the suffering of that victim's girlfriend, even under suspicion that his actions were motivated by unreasonable fear and hatred -- racism. His shortcomings as a human being that resulted in that victim's death are just as interesting to me as the fact of the death itself. I believe that acknowledgment helps me grow to be a stronger and more effective member of law enforcement.

I am not in this career to exert authority or high-and-mighty moralism. I believe in the core "serve & protect" ethos.

You may question my dedication to that. I will just keep trying to prove your assumptions wrong.

The frequency of deaths is wildly different even though it's still a disturbing trend that while crime overall has been going down year over year in the past 15 years gun shootings have been growing. We're not anywhere close to what you're describing at a national level even though certain towns and cities have it really as bad as you claim.
