Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

So where am I gonna find fire Pokemon? Just randomly around the city?

Water Pokemon can be found near the sea so... Is there any active volcano where you live?

Yeah, it's probably random. Some types seem to appear in places that make sense, but other types don't.

you have a link?

Confirmed for Ios, don't know about Android I've gone to sleep.

I live in Canterbury, England. It's got a big population, so loads of Pokemon; beautiful river walks and loads of parks thanks to its strong conservation focus, so loads of great places to walk; and an immense amount of history thanks to its big roles in both Roman and Norman conquests, so loads of Pokestops and Gyms. It should be an amazing place to play this game! But...

Thanks to Canterbury Council's refusal to allow developments taller than the ancient city walls, there are no phone masts allowed in the city. Which means 3G/4G coverage is abysmal inside the city. So I have this walk along the outskirts, along a river, where I can pick up Pokestops along the route but as soon as I cross the river to the other side my 4G reception just drops off a cliff. Unless you can connect to shop and cafe WiFi inside town, there's nothing you can do to play this game =(

So distressing when you can see SOOOO much inside! Reception comparison on each side of the river:

Has anyone else noticed that the "Map Box" on a Pokemon's stats has been zoomed way out, even retroactively? It used to show me where I caught a Pokemon down to almost a city block. I noticed after getting home tonight that the Map was instead showing almost the entire *city,* and Pokemon from days ago are like that now too.

It's gone from "I caught this Bulbasaur on the west end of the park" to "I caught Bulbasaur on the west half of the city."

Huh, I wondered why reception in Canterbury was always so poor! Now I know.

I have a reception problem in my village which is really frustrating. Lost a Magmar because of it and have had issues with the gym, too.

I noticed this as well. Not sure the reason for the change

So does the screen really need to be on and the game active for alerts to work and to measure walking distance? I don't think Galaxy S6 even has an option to keep the screen on permanently. The battery saver option is also useless since the screen turns off after some time (max 10min).

Yes it needs to be on. You can try the app stay alive which you can set on an app by app basis to keep the screen on

How do you estimate the value of a Pokemon in this game?

For example, I have two Poliwags. One with Mud Shot & Mud Bomb, the other with Bubble and Body Slam. Different power values on the moves, different number of blips on the second ability. Is STAB even a thing in this game? Secondary effects, e.g. lowered accuracy from mud bomb?

Feels messy.

Some of you guys mentioned stuff about increasing battery life. Turning off the volume, reducing screen brightness and downloading offline Google Maps. Anything else? And for the Google Maps thing, do I only have to download them or do I have to change something inside of Pokemon Go?

I studied at UKC! Canterbury is great and I really do miss it... especially Level Up Games. I was studying 06-09 and didn't have a smartphone so wasn't that bothered about signal :p

I work in the City of London now, so there will be loads of history for us trainers to ignore :D c'mooonnn UK. Let's GO!

I don't think any of that works honestly, tried everything

So this changed because it now shows you where the pokemon you caught can possibly spawn instead of what spot you caught it. I don't know why they made that change but it helps when trying to track down more of the same type. I do wish the circle was a little smaller though.

fuck, it is getting harder and harder to get pokemons even if they are low level weedle or caterpies. now most of the times I need to use 2-3 pokeballs. the fuck? I am level 9. have they updated the servers?

Does anyone have a Jolteon that doesn't have an awful tap attack? Both of mine are effectively worthless and have trouble with even Vaporeon.

And do super effective attacks do double damage to the enemy or is it just for show?

Just how the game is set up. You'll need to eventually move to great and ultra balls. Pokemon get tougher as you go.

Unfortunately this it true, and unfortunate. I walked a few local trails and came up empty.

Luckily it's not completely impossible for Niantic to fix this. It's one of those things that baffles me they didn't consider from the very start of development, but at least they can patch in rural locations.

The other thing that bothers me is how fully evolved Pokemon can be found in the wild. I mean even frickin' Alakazams. They knew they were going to add trading as a feature, so why not keep to tradition by forcing players to trade if they want Alakazam/Gengar/Machamp etc? Really strange.

I still don't have access to those balls

Is there an expected release date for europe?

And is there any down sides to just go around the system and download it right now? Will i get a different version then my friends will be playing or anything like that?

This game is so fucking addictive. Just got it in the UK from Android APK

I'm also tempted to get a Pokémon Go Plus from eBay.

I live in Canterbury, England...

Really exciting to see another Canterbury resident on GAF, and it looks like a few other people have knowledge of/have been to the city. The signal situation is completely dire, and every time the network operators are consulted about it they just say "there are no signal issues in the area". You would think that with all the technology available to them they could pinpoint the signal issues and come up with an innovative solution, but alas not. Still, there is a fair bit of free Wi-Fi in the city if you know where to look! Imagine how much fun this game could be here with decent 3G/4G.

Just installed the app in Germany and played around with it for like 10 minutes after lunch. Already caught 6 Pokémon. Does anyone have a link with the essential beginner tips? Thanks in advance.

I suspect they backed it off for privacy reasons. Or perhaps because an anonymous little street map means little if you travel a lot?
As a result every single Pokemon I have caught now shows basically the same map now with the same circle, give Or take a few pixels. I have a feeling that apart from a few, you can find pretty much everything in any area, just with greater or lessor chances.

Right, I'm not too keen on using separate apps like that, usually they just end up messing something or draining the battery too much. I think I can live without notifications.

It is a game for kids remember

I doubt they expect an 8 year old to walk 30 miles to catch everything

this is nuts, but i'm happy because it makes me feel less odd walking around looking at my phone for pokemon with 299 other people are doing the same thing, heh.

So what I learned from this thread: save Evolutions till you get a Lucky egg and then start evolving Mons to get crazy xp?

last night I used an egg and evolved 4 pidgys for a quick 4k xp, they are the most common pokemon in my area so good xp after a day of catching a few.

This story makes me very happy.

Hope you get a new phone so you can play it too . Are you in line for an upgrade?

Thank for your support, yeah my Iphone4 can't run this game and I can't afford at the moment to pay a phone 200$+. Used phones could be a solution but I don't know any trsuted website in FRance. So it's going to take me sometime to get a new phone Q_Q

The irony is that I can run Ingress... the previuos game of Niantics...

Point the top of your phone at the ground, puts in battery saver mode while keeping it active

Yeah I noticed this too, it went from covering part of Ghent to covering most of Norfolk.

I noticed that it definitely moves outside of like a 5 mile radius but if you are always in the same area then it's not going to matter much. I liked seeing exactly where I found something before, but I can understand where that might lead to privacy issues. On one hand I like knowing the area that something might spawn in but on the other I miss being able to look at exactly where I found something.
