Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

The hype is real in the Netherlands too.
This weekend there is the annual 4 day hike in Nijmegen and because the city heard a lot of Pokemon Go players will be there to look for Pokemon...they designed special traffic signs at 40 points so hikers and players won't blindly run into each other

I wonder how many of these signs will get stolen.

You can close the app if that happens and it will show up as captured. Noticed it yesterday where I got a Porygon and it froze. When I close the app and went back in it showed up as captured for me.

Unless you're at a high level where Pokemon aren't guaranteed captures. Then you have to reload and hope the Pokemon shows up again.

I would steal that sign

Damn I really wish there was more to do if you are static or locked in one place. Maybe like a take care of your Pokemon game that lets u farm stardust

Has anyone figured out why some people get the Pokémon when the pokeball freezes and some don't? I have no idea if it matters but I always let the server symbol stop flashing before a hard reset and I have never lost a Pokémon to the glitch. Maybe it's just luck but I don't even care when the glitch happens anymore (outside of needing to wait a minute for everything to reset).

On iOS pull down the notifications bar once it goes in the ball, count to five then close the notification centre.

The bug is a timing issue with the server not replying before the animation finished. By pausing the game it gives he server more time..

Managed to catch a CP100 Weedle. That a good one to evolve into a Beedrill or should I wait for a better one? I'm level 12.

All weedles are the same. When you get to lvl 14 you'll be able to catch higher level weedles. To offset that you'll just need to do a few power ups which costs stardust.

Sigh, crashed out when a Nidoran came. Didn't appear in my pokemon after.

Absolutely no point playing when the US are awake. xD

The annoying thing is it means it's rather pointless powering up early.

I feel like I shouldn't bother trying to play the game at this hour (starting 7 PM here). Pokestops just won't work and catching a Pokemon makes the game freeze.

Is there any good reason why so much of the calculations are done exclusively server side?

The random nature of capturing Pokèmon could be handled locally, as could the random drops from Pokèstops. Shit so could the load up of the gym battles as there is a clear list of Pokèmon at the time you initiate it.

Its like the app buffers absolutely nothing and the servers do every bit of thinking. Which is likely why the servers are consistently crapping out.

It only has a couple weeks tops before people get frustrated, rate negatively and then give up entirely en masse. Which would be a damn shame considering the idea is fantastic.

Edit: Oh and they really need to release the other 148 Pokèmon soon as only putting Pidgey, Ratatta and Spearow in the game is a little crazy.

Walked around my downtown for a bit getting a bunch of pokemans and pokeballs. Hella lures too around everywhere. It seems like someone at certain restaurants is dedicated on lures or something. Sadly, I didn't make any friends. I think I might of seen a few people playing, but dunno.

Worst part so far for me is either the servers or my coverage. I'll throw a ball at a pokemon, but the game will just sit there loading pretty much forever and I'll have to close the app to get back to it. It makes me not want to catch some pokemon since I don't want to have bother restarting the game. If it wasn't so up and down then maybe I would be fine? All I know is that I was fucked out of an Abra, Poliwhirl, and a bunch of other shit due to it. At least I caught a bunch of other new pokemon though.

Also sometimes pokespots will just not work. They'll tell me to try again later despite me not having used them at all. It's just weird.

Pokemon locations are not exactly random in the sense that everyone in the area will see the same pokemon. That's why you're required to connect to the server.

Your Electabuzz is a chump.
Seriously, starting to think low value attacks are worthless regardless of the type match up.

Thundershock does only 5 damage and I haven't noticed it attacks any faster.

Meanwhile the other day I fought a gengar who was hitting SO hard with his regular attack.

Thats fine. I expect a check, but what I mean is I don't expect one during the bits with the throwing and capturing that its showing YOU. Every wobble should not be a separate server check-in.

Could you imagine if all other online games were exclusivly handled server side? Every bullet, jump, swipe, key press, etc?

is it common that the app freezes when having the phone upside down for the battery mode?
very often my screen just stays dark when turning the phone again, phone is still running and i can double-tab out of the app yet pokemon stays fully dark and needs to be restarted :(
Happens to me all the time. It's a nuisance yea. Eventually decided to just turn off the battery saver :(

I had such a great experience today with Pokémon Go:

I was walking trough the City with my catching buddy when we stopped at a fountain where two Girls activated a Lure Module to bring in some Pokémon. We had a nice chat and caught some Pokémon (finally got a Psyduck!) when we noticed that in the nearby park some activated two Lure Modules next to each other. My buddy and i decided to go check it out, so we went to the park. There were like 30 players there, all waiting to catch some Pokemon. It was such an amazing sight
I was chatting with some of the other players when it happend: someone yelled "Bulbasaur!!" from the playground, and all you saw was that big group of people simultainously standing up, and walking towards the playground in the hope to catch Bulbasaur. I couldn't because my GPS kept scrweing me up and decided that i was standing like 200 Meters away from my actual location (probably because of the huge amount of people). Just as most were completing their catches, the next person was yelling: "BLASTOISE!!" And the whole group just started sprinting back to our original spot, because that's where Blastoise appeared. I also got a chance to catch it (239 CP), but it got away.
During the next 10 Minutes 2 more Bulbasaurs appeared, but again, my GPS :(
Suddenly, someone yelled out loud: "Nidoking appeared nearby!" Everyone checked their phones, and indeed, the shape of Nidorans final form appeared. One of the people who were present was someone i knew from a few days ago. He lived nearby, so he started guiding everyone to the spot he thought Nidoking appeared. When we arrived there, it turned out to be a Nidoqueen, but everyone tried their best to catch it. Since my GPS kept screwing me up, one of the the first people who caught Nidoqueen offered me to log into the game with his phone, so i could get a chance to catch Nidoqueen, and i did. 839 CP, my third strongest Pokemon.

This whole thing was so amazing. Just to see such a big group of people coming together just because of the Lure Module, and then to go on a short hunting trip together was just pure Magic to me. I had so much fun that i want this to happen again tomorrow. I'm gonna be there, waiting with my Tablet this time around (i hope its GPS is better), and hope to see again such a huge group of of people just talking and catching Pokémon together.

It felt like in the reveal trailer when Mewtwo appeared. Everyone catching and cheering at each other. Just amazing

Shadow Claw, at 16, is the strongest fast move by power. It's difficult to say what are the strongest overall moves because we don't know animation times precisely, but Shadow Claw is definitely pretty high up.

Thundershock is chump tier. Only hits for 5 and has a middling-to-slow animation.

Yeah, it really sucks. If that doesn't work, if you're in the same area where you originally saw it, once you load back up, hopefully it's still there! If not, check your journal to see if it fled.

Yes. Incense will make Pokemon appear at your feet every 5 minutes or so.

Used Incense but none have appeared so far

I'm happy you had such a great and I wish for everyone to have same happy exeperience too! Not like the douchebags in Australia who fought and annoyed the whole neighboorhood.

Oh my. Servers have been absolute garbage for the last two hours for me. Practically impossible to capture something as Pokéball just freezes on the ground. Been passing a lot of medium nice stuff not even engaging them like Psyduck's, Slowpokes, Fairies, Polywags and whatnot simply because it would freeze my app every time. While I'm certain Niantic have some very sharp guys when it comes to networking/scale/data-queries etc they really need to improve how the app and servers recovers from disconnects and package loss.

But at least I managed to hatch like nine-ten eggs on the run (nine active cannisters):
Received 9000xp in one go (with Lucky Egg active) but I also had eggs hatch before and after that single blow. Received three new creatures I didn't have from before:

Tried to take a scenic AR photo (with a common Pokémon).

no Venonat... please.. not again..

In my experience the special attacks have not been worth using.. spamming normals at an attack rate faster than the enemy can return is the best way to go for DPS. The combat in this game needs some serious tweaking.

Its an unfortunate and massive design flaw, for a game that is designed to make you walk - about a series where the philosophy is that Pokémon live out in the wild in the tall grass, that if you're not in a major metropolitan area you're basically getting fuck all.

Newcastle upon Tyne city centre? Poké central.

Any of the surrounding (yet still highly populated) suburbs? Maybe a pidgey every 5 minutes of walking, sparsely situated pokéstops.

Yeah, I hope this is addressed somehow. I still get some good stuff just walking around the neighborhood, the main issue is running out of pokeballs. There is one pokestop within 15 minute walking distance, that just doesn't cut it.

Yep, hardly anything up here in Northumberland

Can't see a Poke Stop at all on my map

Connection woes are making the game almost unplayable for me, why is it not getting more flack for this? Is it a regional thing?

It's partly regional, partly depends on how many users are in the area. My server problems have steadily improved since launch day but ymmv
