Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

I live in a small town (13k population) and there is tons of stops and a few gyms right outside my door.

Best thing I got was a Jigglypuff from an egg.

Apparently I suck at this. Caught my Charmander as a starter, found a Zubat when I was heading to my car and yet...every time I flick a Pokeball and it just either rolls under it, or over it. Is there something really obvious I'm missing? :-( #n00b

Press A and B repeatedly to increase the odds of catching a pokemon. Some say it has to be in synch with the pokeball shake but you can just mash them.

Apparently my android phone is not eligible for the official version, this is despite the fact that I've been playing it for a week. Oh well, I guess I'll have to resort to downloading the latest versions via apk sites.

So, for the people who chose the best team:

I'm with you.

You need to spin the image to get rewards.

I see, thanks

In my experience, if the game freezes as you throw a ball, let it sit for a good 30 seconds, you'll probably see the loading circle in the corner go a few times. Doing this seems to increase the chance of your crash resulting in an actual capture instead of a miss.

I left.it a long time on the first freeze, but no dice. The second one, squirtle was invisible so I think a crash was inevitable

Great my nearest pokestop is the local children's playground. As a grown adult I am not going to go there waving my smartphone camera around. Don't think parents and the police will believe I'm just playing Pokemon.

Turn your AR off?

Does anyone know if there's pokestops at Malls? About to go to a big one for a couple hours near me for shopping

My Mall has a single stop and a gym inside it.

You can't auto update. You'll have to find an updated version of the apk and manually install that. Or once it's available on play store, just re-download it from there and you'll get auto updates. You won't lose your data either way.

Edit: looks like there is a link to the updated apk just below this post

If I uninstall the previous APK in favor of the Google Play version, do I risk any data loss? Or should I just go ahead and swap over?

EDIT: Oops, didn't notice that last sentence in the first bit. Gonna give it a shot!

Its an unfortunate and massive design flaw, for a game that is designed to make you walk - about a series where the philosophy is that Pokémon live out in the wild in the tall grass, that if you're not in a major metropolitan area you're basically getting fuck all.

Newcastle upon Tyne city centre? Poké central.

Any of the surrounding (yet still highly populated) suburbs? Maybe a pidgey every 5 minutes of walking, sparsely situated pokéstops.
It's not a design flag, it's the way it is. Not everyone will ever collect the 151 pokémons without trading or traveling far. Not everyone has the right to obtain a rare pokémon either.

Back when I played Counter Strike with a 14'' 1024x768 screen I was at a disadvantage with someone playing with a 21'' 1080p one, he could distinguish a rock from my head. In this new style of gaming the phone is not as relevant as where you are and what means you have to travel. A 16-year old boy who could play LOL for 6-8 hours per day was at an advantage compared to a 35-year old professional. Now that professional with a car is at an advantage compared to that teen. That's what I like from this game, just as I liked from Ingress.

Just went out in my home area for the first time... I live in the suburbs and it's completely barren compared to where I work (central London).

Found a gym and battled, had no idea what I was doing but I won... but it didn't change to my team's colour? Why's that?

Also how on Earth do you track a Pokemon? I picked one that I want to find, and I see some rustling grass in the distance so head to that, but the footprints don't go up or down, and when I get to the grass nothing happens?

Man, I dropped off some family at the airport early this morning and hoping to get some nee catches and tackle some gyms but the constant outages and gym battles almost always bugging out are really starting to bum me out :(

I wonder if anyone has caught all available pokemon or is extremely close? I'm almost at 100( I have a few evolutions I'm waiting on for higher CP) but it's going to be tough because I haven't encountered Tauros, Pinsir, Scyther, Snorlax and Chansey yet. The other forms I'm missing I have their base and just need to hatch/catch more to evolve.
Saw them on Facebook

Love it. Team Mystic is life.

Nintendo should have piggy backed off the Amiibo craze also since they already use NFC and done something like every 6-12 hours tap an Amiibo to an NFC capable phone and it gives the same reward chances as a PokeStop. Maybe also if a Pokemon Amiibo is used, 1 guaranteed 10km egg every 24 hours.

Everytime I use a lucky egg, the game goes to shite.

That's why I'm so leery to use a lucky egg and power level. Almost did it last night when the servers were much more stable and then 2 minutes later it completely died with a refusal to even login. Noped out of that.

You have to get the gym's prestige (the number in the top left) down to 0. Then it will turn white and you can place a pokemon there. It can take a few battles to get it down to 0 depending on how many points it has when you show up. You can typically knock off 2000-3000 per battle.

Got a CP 388 Slyther at my local pokestop compendium

Literally 50 feet from my house. Count it. 21 pokestops at the local museum/trail/farm.

I only have one pokestop within 2 miles :( It's okay, though, because just past that is a lake with like 12 of them and four gyms, somehow. Soon to be more because there's a McDonald's closeby.

No, you're not. Zubat is annoying as hell! I'm level 8 and have a Pokedex of about 30, but I still don't have a god damn Zubat!!!

After my walk earlier today.. I went to my local park. Yep, I'm addicted now.
There were like 3 gyms and 4 PokeStops there. Pretty obvious who was playing Pokemon Go as people kept walking between the stops as they reset. There was even a group of people just huddled around one of the gyms lol. Someone had put a lure module on one of the Stops so I just stayed around until that wore off. The gyms were 2 blue and 1 red. I was too low level to take over the red one so I just watched someone else do it. When blue finally took over it though, I placed one of my Pokemon there and collected the coins lol. Poor Oddish got defeated by the time I got back home. Finally got some eggs, going to try to hatch those next...
I need a bike.

Just turn AR mode off for flying pokemon. You can't get a good sense of depth with AR on if they are flying, since they are technically way in the back. For Zubat, throw it high.

The server issues have made me reach breaking point. They've been getting worse the last three days, and it's now reached the point where on an hour's walk home today, it crashed no fewer than 30 times. Pokestops also frequently say "Try again later".

I'm getting really pissed off, and it's killing my love of the game. Why did they even bother delaying it's release in some countries if they weren't going to fix it? I thought that was the while point?

Fuck knows how many Pokeballs I've wasted on trying to catch Pokemon, only for it to freeze. Not to mention incense.

This game doesn't deserve the praise it's getting. It's a fantastic game, and when it works, it's incredible, but at it's best it's inconvenient to play, and at it's worst, it's unplayable in the literal sense. Honestly, I wish all the media/news outlets talking about the game were also calling out how bad the servers are. Niantic might pull their finger out and get this shit fixed quicker.

I was considering buying a shitload of coins earlier today, but I'm sure as hell not doing so until the game works reliably.
