MMA fighter Michael Page knocks out opponent, throws pokeball at him.

I agree, it's there to satisfy the barbaric, savage, and animalistic behaviour in humans. It's a shit 'sport' that should be banned world-wide.

Barbaric indeed

On the surface yes, but the more civilized sports of football and boxing are much worse for the bodies especially things like CTE.

If there are those out there who think MMA is gross but treat boxing and football as sacred cows; I'm not one of them. I realize that people aren't roped into this unwillingly, and that any kind of physical activity has a risk of bodily harm. Heck you can be injured just from going to the gym. But I can't sit by an enjoy this stuff as entertainment.

Ironically, I think the pokeball 'toss' is the least offensive thing about this story.

People forget that the various protections in boxing and American football made the sports way more dangerous.

Bare-knuckle boxing had barely punches to the head, now boxing is 12 rounds of turning your brain to mush.
The same shit with football where players are going with their head ahead into the enemy - something rugby players for example don't do.

Almost all of the popular spectator sports put their players at risk of grievous bodily harm near-constantly.
The thing I also like about MMA compared to other sports is that a good portion of fighters aren't pushed into it as children. With football and boxing, you see a lot of people who have been doing it since they were children. With MMA, you see a lot of people from nonstriking backgrounds like jiu jitsu and traditional wrestling. By the time most people decide they want to participate in MMA, they're fully developed adults who can understand the consequences.

Doesn't look like he threw the ball at him, more like gently rolled it.

Also just before the camera cut the shot to the fighter it looks like the ball is missing the mark widely.

Like not even on course to touch the foot.

Didn't think it was possible for fads to jump the shark, but here we are.

MMA is fucking brutal though...some Roman Colosseum type savagery

It's so weird seeing all these professionals and sportspeople who grew up with Pokémon like me still repping stuff like that despite being at the top of their game and actually having a life.

That is horrific. Should be banned, or at least using knees and elbows. People don't watch to see other humans being injured this bad.

Oh please, like he knew that he fractured the guy's skull like that. I strongly doubt Cyborg gives as much of a shit about the stupid Pokeball as some of you guys are pretending to.

Kicks, knees, and elbows to the head have always seemed excessive to me in MMA, though probably only knees have the combined hardness like an elbow with the strength, momentum, and weight that can get put into a kick.

I suspected that...dude wasn't KOed, he was in extreme pain.

Yeah, that was my impression when I first watched the video. I've seen lots of guys eat a knee or a kick while going for a take-down, but I've never seen a fight called while the guy was still conscious like that. Good on the ref for realizing how badly he took that, because usually when a guy goes down like he did the ref has to intervene and the person who got the knee or kick (unless they're clearly unconscious before they hit the canvas) gets punched a couple more times.

PSA: MMA fights are immensely safer than a 12 round boxing match, or playing in an NFL game.

You guys should do some more research. Elvoes and knees end fights quickly in a lot of cases, due to cuts from elbows and ko's from knees a lot of the time. Fights ending quickly is a good thing for combat sports. It results in less sustained brain trauma and cte symptoms. Banning knees and elbows not only makes it more dangerous for fighters, but removes half of the 8 limbs of muay thai, which is a main part of the striking aspect of mma.

Also, stop comparing it to to gladiatorial combat, no one is fighting to their death or against their will. You sound like an ass. The sport is growing in popularity and becoming much safer due to changes to weight cutting (which is actually the most dangerous part of the sport if you actually did some research) and PED testing etc.

If you don't like it, don't watch it. Don't selfishly call for its ban that will ruin many people's livelihoods as well as a great sport. A combat sport, but very much still a sport. No amount of quotation marks or weird archaic comparisons will change that.

Bobb Sapp did when his orbital bone got shattered.

To be fair Bob "Tap" Sapp would cry from a serious scratch.

Kidding of course, he's still tough as, but you know his deal

Damn, what the hell is wrong with people.
How one can get enjoyment out of people beating the shit out of each other so violently is well beyond me. And judging by the taunt, it's even inheriting that cheesy wrestling showmanship only 12 year old kids might enjoy.
Sometimes it feels like we're not actually living in 2016.

Well, the fact that there's people that choose this sport doesn't mean it shouldn't be banned. I reckon if you established suicide olympics you'd have thousands of athletes every edition.

Lol MMA threads in the OT always bring out uninformed shit posts, without fail.

What should I be informed on, precisely?

Both the paragraphs were my opinions, you can agree or disagree on my perception (what to me is violent may not be the same to you) of the violence involved in this sport, but where does "being informed" actually come in?

I don't think uninformed actually means what you think it means.

Your opinion can be uninformed. It can also be shit (see comparing MMA to suicide).

The "enjoyment" MMA fans have isn't from watching people get their skulls caved in anymore than football fans like to watch people become paralyzed. But by all means continue clutching your pearls and acting like society is falling apart.

I was impartial to MMA until Jon Jones came into the 'sport' and I realized how bad the organization was when he used elbows liberally against his opponents. His fight style was basically going out in the ring to permanently damage his opponents by kicking their knees in the opposite direction and elbowing their faces in.

Like I said, clockwork.

This injury from Page right here I don't consider as dirty as some of the stuff Jones has done in the past.

Would UFC really be so unappealing if there wasn't any elbows and knees allowed? I don't think it would be any different honestly but imo it'd be much safer.

It depends on your definition of safe.

Then you are basically eliminating Muay Thai.

Are you serious with that comment? Show me the millions of people that train in suicide and all the suicide gyms that will be closed down as a result. Also yea, you have a skewed way of thinking. "I don't like or understand it, it should be banned even though I don't even watch it. No one else should be able to watch it or use it in any positive way!"

As long as you're consistent though. If you want MMA to be banned I hope you're also calling for the ban of boxing, football, wrestling (amateur and professional), sky diving any dangerous extreme sports or even recreational activity.

See my above post. Knees and elbows end fights quicker to that effect, so do the smaller gloves useD in mma vs boxing. You don't want to punch someone's skull when there's barely any padding on your hand. All these things make for a safer combat sport.

And again, the most dangerous part about MMA is the weight cutting. Which is being eliminated or improved in any reputable promotion.

let's also get rid of armbars, neck wrenches, knee bars, ankle locks and pretty much any other type of submission too, because those involve forcing fighter's body parts in "opposite directions".
Not good enough. MMA would be much better if they just banned elbows, knees, kicks, punches and takedowns. It is just way too dangerous otherwise.

Because people actively choose this lifestyle and profession? Can adults not make decisions for themselves?

Is it because it makes YOU uncomfortable?

You can't have a more savage mainstream sport than this.

Boxing is way worse. Just looks prettier.

Boxing is the greatest sport ever.
