I'm running with the theory
this is just a corpse of the original Godzilla, the look definitely imitates the original Godzilla in a number of ways, but more... Corpse-ier. Then his trail is fucking huge though, AND his tail has a face, like it has eyes, a teeth, and such on the tail at the end to imply the tail has a life of its own. I think the reason it shambles so lifelessly is that this is a literal walking corpse of the original Godzilla being controlled by a parasite that's situated in its tail, and I'm betting the fact it's a walking corpse of Godzilla is playing up some major symbolism here.
That's an interesting theory, but honestly I also wouldn't be surprised if they added the fast moving tail after realizing that he looks too stiff.

But anyway, the questionable design aside, tonally it looks exactly like what I hoped Godzilla 2014 would be.

Man in a suit isn't the problem, it's how lazy it looks, they think this is 1965, gonna put a man in suit, do a better job of tricking me....

Well apparently they did do a good job at tricking you cause it's not a man in a suit, it's a puppet mixed with CG.

I don't mind the unnatural look, it's the first japanese godzilla movie in a decade, of course they are going to pay homage to the ways of old.

I also want to throw in that I'm surprised there using what sounds like the Showa Era roar for this. Visually this Godzilla looks like he should have something a little fiercer like the 50s roar or the 1984 roar

The tone of the trailers has been absolutely on fucking point for me, it's everything I want in my Godzilla, less camp, less toku flair (in the marketed for kids super hero sense) and more serious human drama and emphasizing the natural disaster that is Godzilla.

People keep talking about Evangelion
Heard about it when Pacific Rim was announced and now with this movie.

Is it a live action movie or just an anime.

Unfortunately I'll have to bootleg this because it's not getting a north American release.

Its an anime series from the 90's that love it or hate it, is basically a classic despite its divisive nature. Its a deconstruction of the mecha controlled by kids genre of anime and goes some insane places. Just be aware its a show you probably either love or hate as is probably one of the best examples of depression out there.

The director, Hideki Anno, is also director this new Godzilla movie.

Godzilla is in a rubber suit because it's a tradition at this point, not because Japan "can't do CGI"...

Although you are right about how they want to keep tradition with Godzilla, is not like theres good CGI on japanese movies either.

Supposedly that's just a placeholder and the real thing will be heard in an episode of Crayon Shin-chan.

This movie's marketing hasn't been great.

OMG
The story of the cross-over episode involves Godzilla wrecking Shinnosuke's home town of Kasukabe, and since all of the residents are still paying off 30 year mortgages on their homes, they arrange an impromptu Self Defense Force to counter the interloping monster.
Hahaha, classic Shin Chan.
Going to be funny when this episode airs in the next 5 years in Spain.
And probably its getting a release here if its true the 100 countries release. We usually get all nerdy japanese movies now.

I like how freakishly unnatural this Godzilla looks. He's not cool and there's a feeling of "there shouldn't be a creature like that".

But yeah I hope it moved more.

It's not just Godzilla that looks stiff and inanimate

You'd expect Godzilla's stomp to cause the trees to move a bit. Maybe see the cables sway? Nope everything is just stationary. I don't know, there's just no weight to any of it. Must be some harsh budgetary constraints.

I have no faith that this movie will be any good. It just looks dull and portentous for the sake of it. I mean, if it turns out good I'll be ecstatic. But I have no hope.

If anything, it'll probably make Gamera 3 look even better, since that movie is probably as good as "Kaiju+Evangelion" is ever gonna get.

Nothing in that trailer looks better than the Shibuya scene in G3, which is a masterpiece of kaiju special effects - and it's 17 years old!

Depressing Godzilla: The Movie.

I'm going to just keep dreaming Legendary will let del Toro have Godzilla someday.

I seriously hope there's some showings of this in the US. I would love to see a Japanese Godzilla film in theaters for once.

Looks great, still think GMK Godzilla is my favorite "evil" Godzilla design though.

On Reddit it says (in a Japanese article I can't read) that Shin Godzilla will be coming to 100 countries over the next few months, America not confirmed yet.

There is a fan made anime being created

Do we have any expectations for US Godzilla and Skull Island news for Comic Con or what?

Toho is probably sending their ninja lawyers as we speak.

They don't play when it come to defending Godzilla's copyright.

All the people complaining about the suit... you know this is CGI, right? There is no suit in this movie. They had a puppet, but it failed twice, so they had to scrap it and use CGI. That's why you didn't get a second trailer until 10 days before release. There was nothing to show.

they really should have cloverfielded him.

design looks great at close angles, not so great at distance shots.

Hope there is less disconnect in the movie than the trailers.

Just so weird doing a trailer for a 'disaster movie' where all the humans are pretty boys in suits in clean rooms, where are the main characters on the field?

I think the new Godzilla looks kinda cool. I dunno I guess I feel like looks very other wordly, and I like that.

its funny that the toy is more expressive than what animated in the trailer

and man that toy looks fucking rad

i just wish godzilla is as bezerk in the movie as the toy

Then it a good thing that the special effect director of Gamera 3 Shinji Higuchi is the also the special effect director of this one.

This looks great. Have there been any other recent Japanese adaptations of Godzilla that can be recommended?

Godzilla final wars is a cool movie but it like 12 years old

The last Japanese Godzilla movie was Godzilla Final Wars in 2004. It's got a lot of action, both from kaiju and from the human characters, but it's not great.

I'm excited to see this movie, whether it gets an American release or not. But here's hoping I can watch in a theater in my area somewhere.

Whats the over and under bet on their being mazers in this?

Or whats gonna be the tech to hurt godzilla? From this trailer normal weaponry does literally nothing. Dude just super armors past it and doesn't even react.

They're going to trip him using a giant tensioned cable at ankle length for the Big G. Then its like those commercials for Life Alert,"I've fallen and I can't get up!"

No conventional weapon of any kind should do anything. Masers tanks--if they're even in this movie--shouldn't do anything either lol. Maybe there's some kind of Super X type thing? Or maybe Godzilla is simply unstoppable in this movie, and we're watching humanity deal with it.

I need this.

Who composed the music in this trailer? I love how bleak it is. Also love how Godzilla at the end just dips his head then of course the tease of the Purple breath.

and it still looks like god awful shit

Woah, what, is this confirmed? I wasn't expecting a theatrical release, but I assumed it would be released on DVD at some point.

Damn at all those shots of people in meetings, then Godzilla gets attacked and seems to fall asleep.
I don't get what they are going for here.
Did I just see basically the entirety of the movie's plot?

Did you? Because I didn't see any real resemblance of a plot or story in this trailer.
