Twitter has just banned Milo Yiannopoulos permanently

From buzzfeed:

Like all acts of the totalitarian regressive left, this will blow up in their faces, netting me more adoring fans. We’re winning the culture war, and Twitter just shot themselves in the foot.

i was hoping he'd go on to say "I don't know how much you know about twitter (I'm an expert)..."

“This is the end for Twitter. Anyone who cares about free speech has been sent a clear message: you’re not welcome on Twitter.”

close enough

Seriously, Notch is such a pathetic loser now. If he wasn't rich, I'd pity him.
It's sad really. The guy made a game that influenced millions of people and gave a ton of enjoyment and fun to millions of kids. He is literally a billionaire now. But instead of doing things that he'd just enjoy or bring joy to others, he seems to lock himself up in his house and pick fights on twitter. He has endless possibilities in life, literally no limits. He can start developing a new game just for fun, travel the world, start a charity. But instead, he does this.

I stopped following Notch because every time he showed up in my feed he was mocking or belittle people, bullying, and generally being mean spirited. My memories of Notch of years past was a humble and friendly fellow based on interviews and stuff. I don't know what happened. Maybe LA really does change people for the worse?

And Notch had no qualms about unleashing his 4 million angry followers. He tweeted at a small female game dev when she used the word mansplaining in a tweet and for weeks afterwords her timeline and google search results for her name instead of being her actual work, were profanity and links from sites like RalphRetort. And to this day there are forum threads at the usual places where people are 'digging' on her to try and ruin her life, as people self-identify as Notch's army apparently do this shit as their main hobby.

I would never encourage anyone to engage on twitter with him because his army could pick you and spend the rest of their summer 'digging'.

If I recall, Notch is also deeply depressed and probably has a fair bit of self loathing.

Still, as someone who also suffers from anxiety and depression big time, Notch's road is way more bitter, darker and dumber to be only attributed to depression. He built a halo of victimization around him. And like you said, instead of using his wealth for meaningful contribution or simply make his life better, he took some castle in LA and decided to become a sad little man on twitter, parroting hurtful nonsense. It saddens me really and I hope he can find a better road in the future that doesn't lead to so much bitterness

I saw an old Milo article on reddit and it's hilarious reading it now, my favorite quote must be " If people cannot be trusted to treat one another with respect, dignity and consideration, perhaps they deserve to have their online freedoms curtailed.".

Looks like he got what he asked for back then.

Here is the full article and the whole first paragraph seems to describe his current self http://kernelmag.dailydot.com/yiannopoulos/3359/the-internet-is-turning-us-all-into-sociopaths/
Heh, nice find. Surprised this hasn't been passed around more as his soapbox grew, he basically became the sociopathic troll persona he was railing against just a few years ago.

I hope he's in a happier mental place someday and will look back at himself and laugh/grimace.

Because he's an asshole who no longer has to pretend to not be.

Saw that guy on the Joe Rogan podcast a little bit ago. It was kind of scary how right he thinks he is about everything.

Total douche.

Yeah I saw both of his spots on Rogan, was how I was introduced to his shtick. It's amusing how aw shucks and smarmy his enthusiasm is for the shit he says. Had no idea he spewed the level of hate he did on social media till this blew up. He really tries to present an unassuming and "did I do that?" level of mischievousness for the in-person persona, it's clear how much garbage he really is on the internet. Shocking dichotomy I know :p

This guy sold out. He probably saw how many people he could attract after posting conservative and xenophobic articles, and just went forward from there.

I'm not trying to make fun of his mental health, I jus think he says dumb and at times really offensive stuff on Twitter.

No worries, I mean it's still fair to call him out on his petulant douchebaggery, because that's what it is, regardless of mental health. I just ignore the man as he's in his little bubble far away.

Still, more than "recovery", I hope he would actually make his entourage a better place

As for Milo, it's completely hilarious and his censorship talk isn't even the start of his hypocrisy. I remember him completely loathing "gamers" before the whole GG thing. With incredibly harsh words. Funny how suddenly they became the center of his protective attention once he found out he could exploit a lot of dumb angry people and funnel them into his own reductive views

He's harmless and probably is just trying to find a way to do what he thinks is the "right thing" while also fighting the urge to be a giant shit-stirring troll (an urge that he often fails to suppress).

He's certainly not "the worst".

Milo is the worst.
He's definitely up there. He's still a shit-stirring troll, as you pointed out, and he's spewing his nonsense garbage from a position of perceived authority because he's the creator of one of the most influential video games of all time. If nothing else he's a pathetic loser.

Also, before people go down the silly rabbit hole:

I love the alt-text on this comic:

Edit: already posted (the Kernel op-ed arguing for accountability on social media.)

Dudes an ass, who makes his living by pandering to the alt-right.

We need more of this stuff. But we need it algorithmically. Twitter needs to be able to track, identify and act on patterns like this. Because dogpiling is impossible to stop without going to the source.

I just read up on that whole "Gamergate" thing. Holy shit what a cesspool of hatred and misogyny. We didn't know it, but could that have been our first big introduction to the type of (younger) people who are now Trump supporters?

*Edit: It's also disheartening to see TotalBiscut was one of the major early contributors to Gamergate. I kinda liked that guy...

Zoe Quinn is a indiedeveloper, depending on donations, who suffers from depression.

She created a game to help people suffering from depression, which made her the first target of early Gamergate. That developed into the extreme shitshow we all know, her still being primarly target.

She now helps people suffering from harassment.

Notch is a 4 billion dollar indie developer, suffering from depression.

He harasses people on Twitter.

Great post.

With the resources he has, he could start a trust with annuities and run his own pet project for the common good while leaving something lasting. That's how the "Foundation for a Better Life" works (Arguments about what good it actually does is another matter, but it's the first dividend based past-death no-fundraising organization that came to mind).

Don't know if it's been posted, but apparently Milo wrote this in 2012:

But if the internet, ubiquitous as it now is, proves too dangerous in the hands of the psychologically fragile, perhaps access to it ought to be restricted. We ban drunks from driving because they’re a danger to others. Isn’t it time we did the same to trolls?

Guess 2012 Milo got his wish, when he became the troll.

Edit: See it on the previous page now.

Not just could. It was.

Yeah, I was also disappointed when I found out that TB was a GG shitter.

Shortly after I found out, he was playing some indie game and he's like, "There's your diversity you're trying to cram down everyone's throats." and it's just like, "Fuck you, dude."

Stay losing, alt-right.

Gee, I wonder why notch thinks his ban is a inevitability? Hmm...

For you and everyone who takes this as a genuine confession. This is sarcasm. I assume this is the result of making a statement that was taken as a GG argument and then having people dogpile on him.

...

He takes the standpoint of wanting complete free speech which is why he goed for #FreeMilo. Which again, is something I disagree with, but I wouldn't say it makes him crazy.

He was only pretending to be a bigot! It's our fault we've been falling for his ruse for the past 2 years! he just loves free speech!

Yea, he didn't really hide how awful he was to people. Even when the gaters attacked a transwoman who was a guest on his show he turned to soundcloud to rant about how "those sjws" are the problem. He addressed ever so briefly what the actual issue was but more or less went into a both sides rant that focused heavily on "the sjws" rather than those who attacked her. Last I heard he finally distanced himself from GG but he was far from innocent in sicing his followers onto people.

In short,to relate more directly to the topic, this is a step in the right direction. A shame Twitter hasn't acted sooner since Milo hasn't been the only problem here

That old Milo article is... unreal. Holy shit. Wonder what happened between 2012 and circa ~2014 that made him pivot so completely.

Milo is like a raccoon rummaging around in a political garbage bin. He'll grasp at whatever sustains him. GamerGate was a big, stinky leftover casserole, and he dug right into it.

I have to reiterate how massively disappointed I became in 2014 when a lot of gamers, especially here on neogaf, were willing to go as far as to join forces with fucking neo-nazis and white supremacists all because of some women existed in the video games industry. It was depressing and made me lose faith in the good of humanity.

Back when Leigh Alexander wrote her "you don't have to cater to 'gamers' anymore", people just lost their shit and were not willing to listen and instead throw their lot with racists, sexists, neo-nazis, and bigots, despite all the pain and harassment that was going on against Zoe Quinn, Anita Sarkeesian, and Leigh Alexander. It was completely ridiculous that people just went into a blinding rage because catering to "gamers" were criticized and that objectifying sexualization of female character was being pushed against on some youtube videos.

No one listened and instead were willing to ally themselves with bigots in the face of obvious and evident harassment.

I think that's a bit unfair. NeoGAF is an anti-gamergate stronghold and pretty much bans anyone for sympathy for #GG harassment. 'Gators hate this place.

There was a massive wave of initial bans when it started though. A sizable portion of this community jumped on the GG bandwagon and was luckily uninvited to the forum.
