SEINFELD

An episode of Seinfeld always appears to me to be an exercise in actorly masochism. Here’s a standup’s single semi-insight-cum-joke-type-thing stretched thinner than bubblegum across 22 minutes. How long can you keep selling it? How long can you maintain the illusion that anyone would truly give a mouse-sized shit about any of the infinitesimally small social solecisms that fill this world?

It is further agony to watch Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards keep pumping energy and credibility into the roles of George, Elaine and Kramer in order to disguise the void that is “Jerry Seinfeld” and Jerry Seinfeld – outplayed by the furniture itself – at the show’s heart. It should be prosecuted for nine years of cruelty to actors, not feted. Lucy Mangan.

Dude goes in hard. Must be fun to hang around.

Seinfeld I can see a critic hating on just to be cool even though it's the best sitcom of all time, but Battlestar Galactica and Arrested Development?

Fuck this guy.

Seinfeld? The same Seinfeld that was a refreshing take on sitcoms when it premiered in 1989? The same Seinfeld that influenced a generation of sitcoms? That's overrated? Does the Guardian know what the word overrated means?

Wait, did they say that Jerry Seinfeld is a bad actor? Holy shit this is such a terrible article.

Spot on about Arrested Development (and Community):

As much as I liked the ensemble cast and the many talented guest stars, this show was far too happy with itself to make me happy too. It always felt as if I was watching it with the writers sitting next to me, signposting every overly constructed joke, smugly looking back at me not for a laugh but for a self-satisfied smirk. I had similar problems with Community – another show that decided to tell you it was funny then explain why for what felt like an eternity.

Curb is better than Seinfeld by miles.
Agreed.

There is no sitcom better than Seinfeld, I understand the hate as I find everything else boring after that.

Jerry and Larry you ruined me, RUINED ME!

Agreed for Friends and Mad Men.

Seinfeld and Arrested Development are uncalled for though.

Mad Men was an incredible show. Top 5 all time.

The writing and characterization is unmatched by anything else in the medium.

This list just sought some relevant "shock" names to get clicks and generate debate on social media and message boards to get more clicks. Or else the writer is a moron, in which case, fuck him.

"overrated" belongs on a list of words that almost immediately make me take a person's thoughts on art less seriously.

I've only seen a few shows on this list, so I'll just say they're totally right about Friends.

Seinfeld is timeless, though. Not even close to overrated.

He is right about Seinfeld and Arrested Development at least (those two plus BSG are the only ones on the list I've seen).

Really unfunny and boring shows.

Further proof that Frasier was the best 90s sitcom!

You have my vote, Sir

Frasier+Crane

Lol, these hindsight lists are always complete crap. Seinfeld's season finale was almost 20 years ago and it basically revolutionized the sitcom as we know it. Heck, the show still holds up today.

This is like going back to play Ocarina of Time or GTA 3 and saying the camera sucks or the graphics are crap.

They're all written by different people so there is no consistency in the list. For instance the list includes mad men while the BSG writer talks about how BSG doesn't belong with great shows like mad men

Agreed.

Oh, so bullshit then. That's all that had to say, "I don't like Arrested Development because of bullshit" and the author could've saved me a few seconds. There's opinions, and then there's completely click baity totally unsubstantiated bad opinions. This is the latter.

Mad Men - way downhill as it went on, for me, and consistently redundant and derivative of the Sopranos
Battlestar Galactica - one of my faves of all time
Arrested Development - the jokes get uglier and meanier on rewatches, despite my previous fandom of the show, I have to acknowledge this and it detracts significantly from it for me
The Walking Dead - not for me
Downton Abbey - way downhill after S3
Friends - excellent show that holds up well today
Seinfeld - mixed on this one
The West Wing - great then poor then great again
Lost - up and down in quality throughout
This is England - never heard of it

I don't see the Wire on there so I know this guy isn't totally full of shit. I judge people harshly if they say they didn't like the Wire.

Curb is better than Seinfeld by miles.

I mean sure but without Seinfeld putting Larry David on the map Curb simply wouldn't exist. "Overrated" doesn't mean "bad show" overrated means a work of art is not worth its merit. Seinfeld is definitely worth its merit if only it was so influential on other comedy shows.

uhhh Seinfeld might be the worst actor to star in a #1 TV show. Great show but his acting is by far the worst part of it.

Simply untrue.
