Yes, its mostly for the people that had to buy two pieces of hardware to play Nintendo games.
Also look from the developers perspective, no learning two configurations, no separate console and handheld teams, etc.

Pretty much, but I think it's a bit deeper than that.
Now, all of Nintendo will be working on the same hardware, and that hardware will be Wii-U level, or slightly better with an emphasis on the ability to output to TV. Games will presumably be designed so that they can appeal to both console and handheld gamers.

I dont know if it has been talked about but are the games going to be $40 or $60?
Since there is a version of Zelda BoW for NX I think it is safe to say that some games will be at $60, but maybe not all

Personally i think this is fantastic news for me as a gamer and depending how nintendo approach it i think this will be very successful. So excited to see this thing finally unveiled.

The point is that these teams can work on different series, and thus diversify the library even further.
What he said still stands though. Can't see them making two Mario Karts for the same platform for example. Rather I'd see them making Mario Kart 9 into something they can cash out into the future (extensive DLC plan / microtransactions and maybe constant patch support into the future).
But yes also more smaller projects.

EDIT: But i see the point.What's the point? The base handheld will be a bottleneck regardless. Just giving more resolution will not change for what kind of hardware the games were made to begin with.

It also means we likely won't see things like Mario Kart 7 vs Mario Kart 8 or SSB 3ds vs SSB Wii U again and we might get more original titles or fully fleshed out sequels.

But they're incredily similar to the point of being redundant. Do we really need a slightly different version of a game like mario kart being released so close together? I don't think anyone will miss having 2 near identical games being released on different platforms so close together.
A hybrid device makes so much sense for nintendos software output and i think that alone will see the NX be a success. Both their handheld and home console output combined on one device plus their mobile titles and they won't have to double up on IP's. They also can share development between all teams.
This will also be the first time where all of their IP will be working to sell a single console. They can now have a home console that has all the popular handhelp IP's like pokemon and monster hunter on board.

If they tried to make a super console again they would have another Wii U on their hands. Home consoles aren't doing all that great in Japan, and besides the Wii every Nintendo home console has sold progressively worse in the West. Whereas their handhelds have sold truckloads both in Japan and the West.
From Nintendo's point of view, this is their best option, as it allows them to focus on a single platform and it will provide for both those who want a handheld and (the decreasing amount of) people who want their home consoles.
Whether Western third parties will give it any meaningful support is yet to be seen though.
Yes but also it will allow Ninty to make bigger and better games because they won't have to develop multiple versions of games (Mario kart 7/8 , smash 4, Mario 3d world/land etc). Also as many said already it will make development speedier because of a unified toolset that all devs can use for one system.

Yeah, exactly. We just don't have the complete story yet though. I do recall Nintendo saying it would be easy for developers to port their games to their NX. Reggie called it a home console. Some things they have said themselves don't add up with what we have heard so far. But my hype and excitement is already gone anyway, will just wait for the official announcement now, which really is taking too long.

The games could be spaced out. So instead of having just one Mario Kart game for each platform (two in total), there might be two games on one platform instead, but perhaps 2-3 years in between. I'm just more curious about the number of games being put out, if that will increase or be about the same.

I was talking to some friends about all this and at one point we were talking about how Nintendo said NX would be multiple platforms. If that's true, it could mean they will announce this during the event whenever that is and perhaps a real new console? Yeah i know, highly doubt that. Mostly wishful thinking.

Honestly, the best case scenario to me would be that they release a console with a certain spec level at 200 bucks or so, and then a portable with its own specs, but when combined, can become a more powerful platform. Sort of how developers need to make games for ps4 and neo, they would just create a scaled down version for when you can't have them docked. I doubt this is the case though, but it would appease some people anyways. If both platforms were 200 dollars and the same specs, they could still share the library and when combined become a '400 dollar' console that so many want.
This probably is impossible though.

Nintendo shouldn't have to resign themselves to the portable space like they're allegedly doing with the NX. They have too big of a war-chest for that. It's either an extremely powerful, on-the-go device, or an extremely dated console, maybe both. Point is, no one wants an overclocked WiiU for their home entertainment system and/or a battery seeping handheld with detachable controls. I'm sure that most people who are disappointed with this news are the nintendo fans looking for an online savvy, current gen console with a normal controller and at least some freaking attempt at courting Western 3rd party developers. This news shat all over that.
Whatever NX is, the big n wants to make it the jack of all trades and you know what that means if that's the case...
The issues is that the whole article is painting the picture that NX is using the X1. Given that developer kit hardware isn't final hardware spec and that developer kit X1 is being overclocked how can Eurogamer concluded this:

I spent some more time playing with the idea and concepts being thrown arround so I updated my previous mockup.
I now think that the deattachable controllers could be nice for casual multiplayer on the go, but I am still trying to find a good use for the screen while docked.
I really don't want the screen go to waste like that while in console mode. Especially considering wireless transmission could liberate the (NX) screen for use while still making possible to display the game on the TV

I think people are underestimating how big these attachments are going to be. My guess is they will be Wiimote-sized.

If the dock isn't wireless, using the screen would be a waste of resources (both hardware wise, and developer wise). I doubt most people would have the dock in a place that can be easily seen (by everyone, if playing a multiplayer game), and even if they did, I'd wager it's usually too far away to be useful anyway.

I'm gonna guess the dock will not have additional processing power. What I think happens, if the NX does actually use a Tegra X1, is that it will run similarly to the Pixel C in handheld mode, and run at full speed in the dock like the Shield TV, which I believe has a fan in it for cooling. So handheld mode is around WiiU in terms of capability, and dock mode is somewhere between WiiU and XB1, though closer to the latter.

I just realized I'd never buy this unless there is some sort of achievement system. Nothing else matters that much sadly.
But making the attachments wiimote size would make the screen huge, wich would bring cost, battery, and portability issues to say the least. I gave a lot of tought on the subject, and I think that if the sliding parts are as described by Eurogamer, they are tiny and just meant for small fun multiplayer experiences on the go.

I have my own theory on what Nintendo is doing.
Casuals are no longer interested in consoles they are now exclusively in the tablet and iPhone camps. Nintendo Wii-U clearly has some great technology in the unit with the tablet and off screen streaming that they will want to leverage. Nintendo want's that market and wants to bridge that and consoles into it's own class of device. Enter the NX.
Modified Android base ala Amazon Tablets, NX Tegra 1 (heavily modified to not be a Tegra 2 level but a 1.5 level of the Tegra) which can already do 720p / 60fps and 1080p as well. So a modified version of that would easily support 1080p 60fps docked, and probably 720p in mobile mode. Nintendo will have a store which users can get all the apps they want Netflix, etc and Nintendo games. It will not have the level of applications as Apple or Google, but it will have more titles and NES, N64 type games.

To me, this is their super console by putting all their efforts into a single thing where everything of theirs is available on a single device. Past, present and future will be on the NX and no split userbase.
Since the cat is out of the bag now I wouldn't mind more leaks until reveal. As you said, it's Nintendo's fault. All bets are off.
One would hope, but there's too many rumors pointing the other way and I'm personally tired of trying to justify Nintendo's decisions other than they're being cheap...or ignorant.

I wonder if Nintendo will require all games to have an HD mode. If not, then 540p would make even more sense, as that will be the best resolution for scaling to a full HD display.
